I have been saying this since they came on the scene in the 90's. Have seen them twice recently, and he has to be by far, one of best guitarists and lyricist currently in the music industry. How these guys have never exploded across the industry is beyond me. He truly is an example of the perfect artist with talents in all aspects of music.
He's too much of a genius to the point where he loses that mainstream audience. Fame and money comes at a cost. Usually it means you can't do everything you want but end up compromising. It's a balance.
I saw Ian and was blown away. He is by far up there with jimmy. The best guitar player of our century. I have been a fan since the 90's. Still have his cds. I love him. He moves my soul.
I don't think I've ever seen an interview with him so laid back and conversational. No camera in the face and a list of questions, just a chilled jam session. Seems like a really good-natured dude.
I first heard Big Wreck back in 2000, I am completely mesmerized by Ian's work! It is a little bit of every genre all in a powerful presentation, his vocals are breathtaking!💯
He actually just touches the harmonic 12 frets above where his slide is at, then glissando up. It has a completely different sound than a pinch harmonic (though you could prob get that to work as well). Ian is a wizard plain and simple
I’m watching this, and I’m definitely a huge fan of the band and Ian’s playing in particular. Something that I’m taking away from this interview is how absolutely down to earth, unpretentious and humble he is. The amount of talent vs the absolute accessibility to what he knows and what he’s experienced is amazing. When you gravitate towards players, influences, sometimes you’re let down by their personalities. Not the case here.
Dude finally gets his interview subject to play his biggest hit, and talks over him while he's trying to play it for us, to the point where Ian stops in the middle of it. Thanks Dan!
Ian is just masterful and his guitar sounds phenomenal. (The amp looks like a Line6 DT25.) Just my favorite musician for the last several years. Sure hope BW gets to Texas some time. I have many friends who have never heard of him, and they would just drop their teeth!
I vote unedited! It drives me crazy when an interviewer interjects to spew a useless thought when they have got a wealth of info in front of them. More lessons from Ian!
There is a lot of information fitted in the video... I wish it was unedited to understand the conversation flow and the examples he gives... anyway, I enjoyed the video. Ian is such a beast
Let's be clear about one thing: Big Wreck is the only remaining 90s rock band that remembers that guitar solos are integral to rock and roll! Sadly most bands seem to forget this. Ian Thornley is the last of a dying breed imo.
Here's the real sad part. Record companies have replaced guitar solos with vocal oohs and aaahhhs and lalalas. Why? Because top 40 average people sing along. They change the channel if they hear a solo. I know, at first I was like, who would do that? Apparently most people. We don't, or our friends, because we play or love music. Try riding in a car with the other demographic. It's so sad to see that this is true. My ex would, like someone with A.D.D, change on every solo. Said it was the boring part. Rarely do they finish a song without skipping, they want to sing along, Mindlessly so. No care about the quality of music. It's sad. We need another musical revolution. It's slowly happening, and Big Wreck is in the forefront. Pray for it and hang on guys. This time the record companies are fading, so hopefully it will be lasting.
Ian Thornley is a fucking genius! He and Big Wreck should be massive and don't get the credit they deserve. Awesome singer and he can piss on most other rock guitarists with his eyes closed. Sometimes there's just no justice in this world.
that was very inspiring video as always. I guess you already have a fixed duration for that series but would be perfect if you could just take more time jamming together. Your guests are so special and it is a great pleasure to watch both of you so why not keep it a little bit longer. Still awesome!

if I was to get guitar instructions it would be from Ian, the guy is the best ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, anyone know if he has covered any cornells song would love to hear that!
Compressor helped me too. Thicker strings and a medium height action will also help. 10s minimum for standard tuning. 11 or 12 on the highest string for anything open G/ DADGAD, otherwise I find the string simply too slack to play with much conviction without fretting out
5:17 he "practises slide very little"!? Either his definition of 'little' is at least an hour a day every day for the past 20+ years or he's got some of the most insanely well calibrated muscle memory I've seen
This needs to happen. Literally two of the greatest Canadian guitarists and singers EVER Edit: They already have a connection through Chad Kroeger, only a matter of time lol
Unfortunately I don't think the guy knows what questions to ask. His interview shows this. Many interviewers seem to have our dream jobs, but have little knowledge themselves. Look at the premier guitar guys that do the artist rig interviews, gear and rig rundowns. They have little to no idea half the time what gear even does. It always amazes me. They're supposed to be the experts.
Oh dear, folks of the viewer comment bin 🤦♂️. Ian is not underrated. He possibly prefers to not want to have to manage the admin of popularity and mainstream Guitarist ogling, chatter, banter, comparisons et al. I don't pretend to speak for him, as I said: possibly. Because I can imagine it well as an introvert. It is quite possible and nifty at the same time to be somewhat "undercover" and still be able to smoke most big-mouths to silence and contemplation. As if everybody wants to be main, and "looky it's me". Oh the world of idiots. Wasted rant, I'm guessing. My favourite part of this very good piece of content, is: (at risk again of sounding negative) Dan with fake nervous giggle and smile saying: "hey, how're you... eh-eh, slow down...". 😂 Precious beyond gold. Amazing IP and content Ian T. Peace and Let People Be, Peeps who don't know better. 🤦♂️
Not just that he has the knowledge. The dude wants to share it. I’ve met him a couple times and as soon as you start asking about technique, or influences, or gear, he just starts gushing information. I spent an entire headliner set chatting with him and watching at a show. He treated me like an old buddy he’d known for years. It informed how I talk to people after shows. And it’s a memory I’ll keep close my entire life. He’s not just good. He’s a class act.
He really is. I don’t know if you follow him on Instagram, but he, Pete Thorn, and Andy Wood all Shred in there pretty regularly and interact with their followers. All of them seem to be super nice dudes.
Being a guitar nerd, I do of course follow all three. Could you post a clip of the Ian Thornley sig? I'd love to hear it through an amp other than the Suhr Hedgehog.
Monty Cantsin I’ve been planning on it. I’m supposed to take delivery of a custom TL806 designed cab today or tomorrow. Once I get it set up, I’ll plug my Triple Rectifier into it and record something. Difficult to do though when you have small children running around everywhere. Maybe this weekend sometime. I’ve played it through several amps though. The guitar retains its character pretty well from amp to amp. The switching options are really useful. I’ve used it for jazz, and for death metal. And just about anything you can think of in between.
I want to "like" this but it's at 420 likes, and I kind of don't want to mess that up. Ahh, what the hell. I love Ian Thornley's vocals, but watching this video is also super informative. Sexay musician!
The next time you interview a musician of Ian Thornley's caliber, maybe you should try to know at least a little bit about them out of respect and recognition for their body of work. This was an amateur interview at best, with no preparation and terrible editing.
Ya but after watching lots of Ian interviews some how in this setting Ian is so relaxed and feeds off this youthful excitement .. which makes the interview great actually
Ian instead of embarrassing your fans during a concert for pic n video taking ....you need to remember those are the fans that made you !!! Check your ego !
Ian Thornley is an underrated genius. As is Big Wreck. They deserve way more fame
I have been saying this since they came on the scene in the 90's. Have seen them twice recently, and he has to be by far, one of best guitarists and lyricist currently in the music industry. Chris Hammond A lot of people may perceive it as worship music. Some songs have that soft, uplifting vibe.

Wayy more
One of the best guitar players on the planet and my favorite slide player.
Not to take even one glimmer away from Ian's brilliance, but if you like slide, check out Justin Johnson. AMAZING.
I don't think I've ever seen an interview with him so laid back and conversational. No camera in the face and a list of questions, just a chilled jam session. Seems like a really good-natured dude.
It's gotta be said, Ian is a phenomenal guitarist.
Big wreck is and will always be my favourite band
Simply Amazing
Such a cool, laid back conversation with my favorite guitar player! Props to Dan for letting his subject shine. Well done.
I first heard Big Wreck back in 2000, I am completely mesmerized by Ian's work! It is a little bit of every genre all in a powerful presentation, his vocals are breathtaking!💯
I'll be standing front row for the 4th of 5 times seeing BW since 98, this month. Stoked AF.
man this is so awesome i can go and on and on.
He did that pinch harmonic slide thing in the solo to Under the Lighthouse in Charlottetown, and I remember almost falling over...crazy cool
He actually just touches the harmonic 12 frets above where his slide is at, then glissando up. It has a completely different sound than a pinch harmonic (though you could prob get that to work as well). Ian is a wizard plain and simple
@@ericbrewerguitar1499 Yeah, I would term that “artificial harmonic slide”.
I found also that Ian feeds of the Audience. Thank You! The best concerts of our lives!
The best band on the planet and criminally underrated under rated and unknown. Soooo much ground covered and it’s all just beautifully done.
I'm still rockin Big Wreck and Thornley in 2019.
Definitely, but I actually discovered Thornley first and then slowly got into Big Wreck lol
@@mwizaofficial127 I almost like Thornley better.
@@adrianmcneil584 I thought I was the only one 😂 Thornley had more 'epic' songs and I found them from a video game so I may be biased
What a treat! I just love Ian's work!

So cool!!! Thanks for that.
Ian is THE man
Ian is a killer player ...and his musical observations are quite compelling .
Ian is simply an amazing genius!
Ian is just masterful and his guitar sounds phenomenal. (The amp looks like a Line6 DT25.)

Very nice, Thank you
Ian is the coolest!
There is a lot of information fitted in the video... I wish it was unedited to understand the conversation flow and the examples he gives... anyway, I enjoyed the video. Ian is such a beast
Yeah the unedited version MUST be posted one day!
Totally agree the editing is awful and does this clown interviewer even play...
I thought the same thing. I bet so much great info was cut for time.
What a great interview

A Canadian treasure. He deserves "single name" status.
Great! Well it's Thornley, he's amazing. Yes please post the whole video, feels like I missed too much.
Man Ide love to jam with you Ian. Been a fan 3 decades, played drums all 3 to almost your your tracks!!!!
As a teen in the 80s, my Dad had a Marantz receiver .. that thing was the magic that was hooked up to the dual cassette with the analog level meters.

LOVE THIS BAND. Saw them this year in Red Deer AB. sound in the bar sucked but I was happy I was there.
That harmonic at 6:16, Jerry Cantrell does that also, playing the note then tap 12 frets up. Difficult to pull of and fit into a lead

I played his signature model guitar through a PT-100, and OMG, what a sweet, sweet soundscape!!!
Love during the bends Ian is staring at the guy., bahahaha like wtf, how is he so good.

everyone knows he and cornell sound very similar. I'm sure that's why he'll never cover cornell.
Great player and tone!
Thanks! That was great!
love this video! Ian is the man!!!
KILLER VOCALS, KILLER GUITAR
I've NEVER been able to get sustain like that when I play slide. That is just siiiiiiiiick!
MA L Try a compressor. A lot of slide guys use them and it’s probably better than adding more distortion. Good luck!

WHY ISN’T IAN THORNLEY THE BIGGEST SINGER IN THE WORLD!!?? HE IS AMAZING!!! I MEAN DUDE ALIEN, ALIEN NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!

Ever notice how EVERY cool guitarist does the devil horns to point at the neck and bridge pickups?
Rock guitarist 101.
Way to ruin something
Imagine Devin Townsend and Ian Thornley making a record. Both love massive open tuning sounds.
This needs to happen. Literally two of the greatest Canadian guitarists and singers EVER

Ian was actually giving HIM an interview
"K......slow down" lol that was funny!!

jeez, i always wondered why no matter how in tune my guitar was In Loving memory always sounded slightly off, now i know why, lmao.
