  • Chernobyl - Excursion within the Sarcophagus | Documentary
It was the greatest nuclear disaster in history: Chernobyl. On April 26, 1986, the reactor exploded and burned down part of the plant. Dozens of people died from the effects, thousands got cancer and the radiation is still measurable. A huge sarcophagus is now shutting down the plant.
The construction site is next to the power station, because of the radiation it could not be built directly on the ruin.
The 35 million kilo hazard was moved over 300 meters, from the construction site to the power plant. It was on 116 sleigh shoes, a type of roller skates that can carry 700 tons each. "It's very special when you're looking at that," says De Rijk.
"The guys who worked on it for six years" were particularly impressive, he says. "Those boys were looking in tears on Sunday."
Construction has been coordinated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). More than 40 countries have contributed to this, eur 1.5 billion in total. The EBRD has published several videos showing the construction of the sarcophagus.
