Told this story here before. Last year I went to our local Toyota dealership with the intent to buy two rav4s, one for my wife, one for me. They had a $4000 markup on these things and they would not budge from their inflated pricing. Literally walked across the street to the Subaru dealership (Subaru was my second choice) and they were happy to sell a Forester Touring and an Outback Limited under MSRP. Guess who got my business....
Ford did this to me with an explorer ST, 10K over MSRP. Went down the street to dodge and got a ram 1500 rebel with a higher sticker price for under the sticker price of the explorer ST. Guess which one I bought...
Why not buy a hyundai or kia? Subaru is just as bad, theres a reason your subarus cost less money. My 07 rav4 with 250k miles runs perfectly. My friends 6 year old subaru forester had many defects, and he regrets not buying the toyota. Oh ya, just wait until you pop a tire, youll find out soon.
Definitely helps. Just start doing it. Jump in and go. A lot of the issues are replacing stuff like this. I've saved a lot of money doing it myself and having scans done at the auto parts store. Also paying like $40 on a site that has access to pro mechanics. I changed my timing belt recently on my Honda Odyssey. I used YT, forums and fix'ya. Saved almost 1K. Well worth it.
@@FirstnameLastName-sx8ls We are in the golden age of DIY car maintenance. We have unprecedented access to info and parts. Especially parts!! Here's another clunk when in reverse. If the bottom bolt to a brake caliper or bracket is missing it can raise up a couple inches and clunk on the inside of the rim when going in reverse. The brake caliper goes back into place when driving forward but will eventually loosen the top bolt.
I had an 06 matrix 5spd same blue as Scottie’s in perfect shape. On a Friday, I said to my father, “you know, I think I’ll keep this car as my daily driver for at least another 10 years”. The next day, an unattentive driver pulled out in front of me and totalled my car. Nobody hurt, but I lost a friend that day. RIP matrix
For a master mechanic that has been a mechanic for 50 years why is it he is working in his driveway. As a foot note I have been a mechanic for 40 plus years , after retirement , I delivered parts for Napa and if you think Toyotas don’t break down you need to go to a Toyota dealer and see how busy they are , the one i delivered to was huge and always busy , had engines with rusty frames stacked in a pile outside!
Yeah but he doesn't link to it, which he should have. Those things can hurt like hell if they snap on your fingers while you're trying to use channel locks or some other tool.
When I did my first radiator on my first car (75 Eldorado) because it literally exploded on the interstate nobody told me to burp the system. I was on my way to Maine with not a cloud in the sky when all the sudden it seemed to start raining- turns out coolant was violently bubbling out of my overflow and onto my windshield! Luckilly I limped my way to the local Lappens and the guy there told me what to do. So from that day forward on the rare occasion it's sorta sunny but still raining I always ask the passenger if it's also raining on their side of the windshield!
This may have been said already, but. Why didn't you change the radiator hoses? They are cheap and you would have avoided a future problem. Just a comment on the thermostat change. I've a 2006 Corolla and the temp gauge always ran a little below the middle line. I saw that it started to run a little above the middle line so I changed it and then it was back to status quo ante. I did this when it was 13 years old.
Well, I was interested in the radiator and fan change. I am not very confident in my own practical aptitude so watching Scotty's work was useful to me.
Mines 20 y/o in Canada I think rust is gonna take it in a couple years. Ive stopped doing anything but basic safety maintenance, shes lived her life well and treated us good for the 6 years weve had it. Couldnt have asked for more from a 1,000$ buy and fix when we were still students after all. Toyota for life here now
I have a toyota matrix as well and sitting at 210k miles. Only problem i have had was ac condensor failed. Only gripe with it over 17 years is it doesnt have features like my newer cars have. No heated/cooled seats, no auto dimming mirrors, no automatic climate control, need to go full aftermarket audio just to get anything decent. Idk just a coupke things
To the first question, I live in the Chicago area just 5 minutes away from my house is a Toyota dealership. They wanted $41k out the door for a base model RAV4. We went to St Charles Toyota, about an hour away and we got a RAV4 for MSRP and in this market I can't even complain
SCOTTY, WHYYY???😭😭. I noticed you put the original rubber fittings back on instead of getting new ones. I had a 07 Matrix that needed a new radiator from the original one at around 220,xxx miles. I replaced it myself and had to end up doing it twice because of the rubber fittings. That wiggle you showed taking yours out, mine still did that with the new radiator and old rubber fittings. I was able to get the radiator replaced, but I got new rubber fittings, and when I installed it with the new fittings, there was no wiggle at all. Unfortunately, I don't have the car anymore, but it was a blast while I owned it 😁
I would be worried buying any type of parts online, if you have money might as well pay more for a quality part and not worry if the part will last. The old saying, you try to save a few bucks, in the long run it will cost you more.
Having a new water pump, catalytic converter and timing belt installed in my 2001 330, 000 miles for 1330. Yes a lot of 33s lol, but Im happy bc I LOVE my 4 Runner!!
I got one of those hose clamp tools a few years ago. Working on a GM and some genius engineer thought it would be great to put a clamp up against the firewall so that the only way to get to it is with that tool. I guess GM is good for something, because I use that tool all the time now 🤣
Our Toyota dealers have no new cars either. I stopped by one of our dealerships and they had a Corolla cross for $26.2k and it said on the window that 8 available. And when I called and asked what the otd price would be and they said $33.+k and you would have to wait 90-120 days if lucky. So I bought a Mazda cx30 with heated seats and got it NOW and under invoice about $1400. And seems good so far and will be good in the winter. Frozen tundra
Just had my mechanic friend replace the radiator on my 14yo Ridgeline. The radiators on those trucks of that vintage have been known to corrode and destroy the transmission. I intend to keep this vehicle until I’m gone so it was a small price to pay for peace of mind. When you have a good older vehicle, you are money ahead to keep it maintained instead of paying the horribly inflated prices for new or used vehicles.
Scumbag Toyota dealers here in Pittsburgh are hiding cars too. Parking lot on side of building full of "wholesale" vehicles. Salesman told me, "those are not for the public".
I drive for a company that has reps all over the states visiting their customers, I put around 5.000 miles a month, we have vehicles with 300.000 miles 600.000 miles and they are all corollas 2005-2010 all well and alive.
Scotty mentioned it is not a good idea to fix an automatic transmission, on an older car. Only manual. No hassle of connecting the fluid lines to the radiator either.
I think I’ve seen a headline somewhere that implied that Toyota is trying to go to a factory managed ordering system? Order at a dealer, car is made-to-order or at least shipped from centralized inventory perhaps
I'm going to have to do that with my 2010 Corolla soon. New belt, water pump, thermostat and might do radiator also and new hoses. Just preventative maintenance.
Having driven trucks since before I had a driver’s license, on and off, all my life; 3 on the tree, 4 on the floor, 8 sped split axle, 10, 12, 14, and 18 speed synchronized and nonsynchronized, I would NEVER buy a manual transmission vehicle. I got nothing to prove. Scotty hates them but I love them colon CVT transmissions with a launch gear
I have a 2006 Rav4, 125k miles on it. Two days ago it didn't start, the stick was loose and the problem was the gear shifter cable. It was easely replaced but for a moment I thought it was someting worst like a dead transmission.
8:57 The 2nd Gen Chevy Cruze has never, I repeat, never been any list of worst cars anywhere online. And I’ve looked at all of the lists. The Cruze, like most cars, is not made to be driven hard.
If anybody's had to do a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo radiator job, knows that this looks so much easier. Also the reason I just went and bought another Toyota Corolla, haven't had one since 2004 and now have one again, a 2022 se.
Scotty, ate you still in Clarksville? I have a new car and I know how you're not a big fan of mercedes-benz, but if your game is like you to check it out.
I don't trust parts that you get online because I believe no matter what they tell you, there's no way to tell if they're really OEM unless you know what you're looking at. I know you do, but as I DIY'er, I may have problems with that.
It's weird seeing this job done without running into all the rusted mounting bolts endemic to Michigan. It only takes a couple seasons to reduce those fan mounting bolts to little rods of crusty ready-to-snap iron oxide. Seventeen years later, the fans are held on with fairy dust and wishful thinking.
My 2016 Honda crv with cvt transmission when I get up to 5000 rpm transmission slips I have a million miles warranty from dealership for the drivetrain. I bought it when I bought the car. But. Will me changing the transmission fluid help or fix this or should I take it back to dealership for maintenance?
WOW! You actually DO work on cars! I believe this is the first of you videos that I have seen where you actually do a complete job! Also, that hose clamp tool from Snap-On is the bee's knees! ALWAYS use genuine Toyota coolant! My experience has been that other coolants react with the metals used by Toyota and cause corrosion and early failure of the cooling system. Since the transmission lines run through the radiator it may be necessary to top off the tranny fluid, too. Love your channel so keep up the good work. Oh Hooah too!
I just replaced one of two cooling fans on my 1992 Camry 2.2..it lasted 249,837 miles and 31 years. The passenger side fan is still working. I know I probably should have done both at once but im curiousto see howmuch longer it lasts..
Hi Scotty, I came across a 2008 Nissan X trail, looks clean runs very well, shifts well very hard to detect any issues , what are the common problems with type of a car should I be concerned about
X-Trails are pretty solid. Just make sure you get the service records from a Nissan dealership if you can if you really want to see the history of that vehicle.
OEM rad. hoses last forever...replacments suck they are too thin and last a few yrs if you are lucky REmember when any replacement hose was the same as oem.
I bought a 2104 Chevy Cruze with 6 speed manual. Nice little car good milage. But at 60000 miles the BB in the pcv flew out and went through the top of the engine. So the dealership rebuilt the top of the engine and I instantly took it somewhere else and traded it in. The dealership said that this pcv is a know issue. But the swine never replaced it even though they did all the maintenance. Pure swine.

Scotty, you CAN’T BE MAD AS HELL after 17 years! 🙄
Cars should easily last 20 years. You pay a small fortune for it
hes being ironic. He loves his Toyota.
The radiator let go after only 17 years. Awe, most 17 year-old cars have already been scrapped. Can't beat Toyota quality.
Weird Timing ⏱️ My Company Freightliner Cascadia blew a Radiator at 495,000 miles! 😊
looks like ytour headlight has water condensation. you probably want to get that too.😀
I don't trust parts that you get online because I believe no matter what they tell you, there's no way to tell if they're really OEM unless you know what you're looking at.
Scotty is an Automotive Treasure for us Do it yourselfers ! 🏁🏁
Thank you Scotty!
Scotty you're an amazing mechanic thank you for the wonderful videos..👍
i am planning on buying a used toyota sienna, which models should i avoid buying between 2011-2019.
Scotty has a wealth of knowledge. I wish he had a clone, living in San Diego. If anyone here knows of one, let me know.
Tony, at Zoo Automotive in Ramona 😊
Thanks for the info Scotty
I just replaced one of two cooling fans on my 1992 Camry 2.2..it lasted 249,837 miles and 31 years. The passenger side fan is still working. I know I probably should have done both at once but im curiousto see howmuch longer it lasts..
You don't seem mad... Love your stuff!
that's one thin radiator.
Hi Scotty, I came across a 2008 Nissan X trail, looks clean runs very well, shifts well very hard to detect any issues , what are the common problems with type of a car should I be concerned about
It’s 130k miles, only serviced record tires, fluids ,filters, battery and brake pads, everything else is OEM
X-Trails are pretty solid. Just make sure you get the service records from a Nissan dealership if you can if you really want to see the history of that vehicle.
OEM rad. hoses last forever...replacments suck they are too thin and last a few yrs if you are lucky
REmember when any replacement hose was the same as oem.
THIS GUY MUST HAVE GONE TO AUTOMOTIVE COLLEGE 😅👏💖
Seems like a good idea to replace the hoses given they are 17 years old.
Pure swine.
No one is going to pay for repairs for something that isn't broken
Help Scotty get to 6M!
