The whole afterglow scene is the comfort of an after life, or this case; paradise. Its bitter sweet but you pray that all souls will find peace. No matter how cruel this world is.
Expect to see a lot of this to have a bit of spiritual healing and pain. Which is incredibly rare for anime to touch upon.
