I am on state land in this video. The coordinates are 46.6877614, -85.8972673. Take H-58 to School Forest Road. Cross the Sucker River and turn right onto Deer Lane. Do not take Sandy Lane. Sandy Lane leads to private property. Also be aware that there is a very sandy spot on the way. I could barely get though in my Jeep without putting it into four wheel drive.

We put in the coordinates and it goes to state land but your followers are not going there. Your coordinates are at the end of Deer Lane and that is state land and that is correct but people are going to the end of Sandy Lane which is private. Would you be able to change the video to give step by step directions? School Forrest rd just over the sucker river turn right on Deer Lane and follow it to the end. Do not go on Sandy Lane.
I think I might have had a small stroke watching you put back all those beautiful rocks! I wanted to reach thru my tablet and say ,NO, KEEP It.Yep,pretty sure it was a small stroke. I'm petty sure I'll never be a catch and release gal! I'm sure to have no self control. Keep posting!
I'm really sorry to cause so much stress! If I took them all home, my house would sink. I've gotten a lot better at telling myself "no" over the years. I used to bring way too much home. Now I'm more of a catch and release guy.
I too get very distressed when he drops them back in. I even see rocks he doesn't pick up--that I would love to have. I live in south central Iowa...and there is nothing here to collect. Southeast Iowa has geodes, but here just south of Des Moines, absolutely nothing. Even the creek banks and rivers here have nothing but mud. I guess if I am going to find anything, I will have to drive north a little ways to find it.
My brother and I each found very yellow stones (cooked corn colored) in Lake Michigan. Assuming they're citrine, since they have a semi-transparent look and are smooth. Any thoughts on this? I've never seen anything like them before! (Also, thank you for toughing this out to film!)
Those sound like quartz to me. My wife bought a metal daisy sculpture to put in our daughter's room after she moved out. It's just black iron and I generally like it, except that the centers of all the flowers are gaudy plastic diamonds. I want to replace them with yellow cabochons, but she insists that they be yellow like a daisy. I have taken several yellow quartz rocks home and cut them, but they are almost all white inside. The yellow color on most of them is only on the surface. I have found a couple that were more orange colored throughout. None of these has been yellow enough for my wife's approval for the daisies though.
I can't even begin to describe how beautifully clear the water is and how blue green it is!! One of the rocks you threw back was banded agate it had beautiful bands running through it. Never even heard of unakite or omarolluk rocks before. All were just amazing and the scenery was beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Some similar youtubers IMO display a feel of non realistic over excitement. It’s actually annoying to me. These videos in general are very relaxing and enjoyable. I was in Grand Marias a few days ago looking for agates and yooperlites. Succeeded in finding agates, but failed at yooperlites because I had the wrong uv light, as well as massive competition with better uv lights…

Very nice - I have to say Grand Marais is one of my most favourite places in the WORLD! Not sure why, but I love Lake Superior, so clean and pristine in the UP, and can be so quiet and the beaches are lovely - looks as if there's been some rough weather of late?... And don't forget that AIR! Magnificient! I lived on Lake Michigan for 5-years (then 6 in Chicago) & am now way south! Hope you found some neat rocks - plenty of lovely ones to choose from!
I couldn't tell you about rough weather because I'm from south of the bridge. I completely agree about how nice that area and Lake Superior are. I love visiting there.
@@MichiganRocks The last time we were up there, the snow started flying, which made my parents get a bit anxious, but it was only October - but I surely wouldn't want to be there in the depths of winter as that cold is tough to bare - though I lived in Muskegon & St Joe, so I know how it gets with the wind and snow. The pebbles and the water always seem more magical up there. Enjoy - I always think MI and WI are very underrated States!
The rock at 12:21, a "ma-gate", is an entire agate nodule! You are only seeing the banding in a few spots because that is were the host rock has been worn down to the agate embedded within. A great find!
andi hales I posted a picture of it on the FaceBook group, Lake Superior Agate Collectors and they also said it was an agate. I’m a once or twice a year agate hunter, so I have trouble with the ones that aren’t obvious. Thanks for the help!
So beautiful. Just found you today through a post from a childhood friend who lives on Higgins Lake. She collects a lot of the pudding stones. I love that you always wear a Michigan shirt. I grew up in Michigan but lived many years all over the US as a Military wife. My heart has always remained in my homeland though. As I've always heard "you can take the girl out of Michigan, but you will never take Michigan out of the girl" I get so homesick. I traveled home in late September and early October 2017. Other than seeing family for a few days we spent the week traveling up the coast of Lake Huron, spent a night in alpena and then made our way to Grand Marais. (My first time ever traveling the UP) The weather was so gorgeous for that time of year! God was definitely blessing me on this trip. We walked the beaches there along Lake Superior and did some rock hunting. It was hard to leave so many beautiful stones and rocks there in the water since we flew into Michigan I knew I couldn't carry much onto the plane. Watching your video just brought back some very nice memories. I will for sure continue to watch! Thank you! And oh, by the way, I did bring back just a dozen or so favorites including a really nice fossil and a Petoskey stone. The guy checking my bag in Detroit says "you have rocks in your bag?!" When I told him I had to take a little bit of home with me back to Colorado, he just smiled, zipped up my bag and told me to have a good flight. It was the best trip I'd taken in years!💕🙂💕
I live in Alpena. Did you do anything here? Next time you come to Michigan, just fill a flat rate box with rocks and mail them home. The flat rate boxes are the best way to send rocks because the weight doesn't matter.
That's a part of the state I should make more of an effort to get to. The only place I have hunted near there is the Pilgrim Haven Natural Area. I really enjoyed it.
That is Gods country. My parents made a home movie in 1956 of our crossing the lake on a ferry boat while they were building the bridge in the background at Mackinac.
My wife's parents talk about crossing in the ferry before the bridge too. It's been there as long as I can remember. A ferry ride sure would add a lot of time to a U.P. trip.
You could start a business chartering rock hunting on the Great Lakes. After watching your videos it puts quite a thirst in a body to come up there to walk on those beaches, hear the waves, see the beautiful scenery and discover amazing rocks!
It doesn’t really require a guide to do. The rock hunting always looks better when you edit several hours down to 15 minutes or so. Just go to a beach and have some fun.
My Gf and I just traveled from Texas to MN to find agates and we found a nice haul and we just posted a vid. Awesome agates, I do want to get out to grand Marais some day
Cool video. Cold, in fact. You chose a weird time of year to drive from Texas to Minnesota to look for rocks. I'd suggest next time to come up this way in the summer. Of course, you didn't have to deal with bugs by doing it your way. Are you aware that there are two places called Grand Marais, and both have agates? This video is in Michigan, but the other Grand Marais is in Minnesota. If you're looking for rocks, they're both good, although I've never been to the one in Minnesota. If you come to Michigan for beautiful scenery, I'd suggest the Keweenaw Peninsula. They have lots of cool rocks there and the views are really pretty. The Grand Marais area is nice but it lacks the hills that the western U.P. has.

@@BEXIVLOGS A cross country trip certainly is spontaneous. I thought it was a really good video. Did you have to get permission to hunt the gravel pit? I hear gravel pits are the best place to hunt agates. Of course, active pits are going to have more new stuff exposed all the time, but I'd even settle for an abandoned one.

I miss Lake Superior so much. I am older now and live in Florida. Walked those beaches a lot in my youth and found a nice share of agates. Too bad I didn’t know Yooperlites existed in my youth. Lake Superior State Forrest campground is my favorite camping spot! Can be difficult getting a site. Your homemade rock picker is awesome as well!! I remember when they started making them commercially, $59 is pretty steep!! I bought an old ski pole and attached a spaghetti spoon to it. Bent the "fins" on the spoon outward a bit, works GREAT!!! Haven't been able to head up there in a couple years so your vids help!! Thank you!! PS the curve just to the east of the campground, there is a two track that continues east along the lake. Another great boondocking spot! ❤️
I looked at those trees for quite a while, when I was trying to figure out how to get back up. I needed a plan before I jumped off a four foot vertical sandy bank. Luckily, there is a ladder.
The beautiful lake and sky shots you took were reason enough to watch this video and then you throw in lovely rocks and drift..trees lol . Ask Katydid what the rock is called ...if she doesn't know she can make up some hilarious names for it as you did with the "magate" lol. I refuse to wear boots in June. The rest of my body was warm at least. It’s hard to mess up a video when there’s beautiful stuff everywhere. I can’t wait to get back up there.

I go to Copper Harbor every summer too. My sister lives in Lake Linden which is only about an hour away. That area is beautiful. If you’re passing through Marquette on the way, be sure to stop at Canyon Falls. It’s a roadside park about halfway between Marquette and Houghton.

I'm very hesitant to travel up there on a weekend in the winter because I have to get back for work on Monday. I don't want to travel for five hours on icy roads. You'll want to get a map of the different waterfalls in the u p, because some of them and I remember maybe Munising was one of them.... you have to hike a little bit to get to it
iwantthetruth andnothingbut I just bought a book of 199 waterfalls in Michigan. Only one is in the lower peninsula, and it’s about an hour from my house, so I should be all set. Munising is probably my best bet because I can do the ice caves and several waterfalls in the area. My sister, mom, and son live in Marquette, so it’s not too far to go to have a free bed to sleep in.
Love this vid, watched several times! Thought I’d share...it’s Oct 25, and we’ve been in the area for a few days, taking in the spectacular colors & of course the ROCKS! One of our fav places is Grand Marais beach (Woodland Park access). Very grateful to find some stunning agates here today!!! In our experience, best time to come is off-season & just after some rough currents ☀️
I usually get there in mid June. I'm a teacher, so I have trouble getting there other times of the year. I'd love to go in October or November when the biggest storms come through or in the spring after the ice has rearranged the rocks.

I love geology!!!! It's so cool! Ameture geology is very huge!! I love your channel and its time watching you it!!!!Im 12 and i really wish to be collecting rocks. I collect rocks from my back yard all the time!!! They aren't as good however! Also there's no such thing as collecting to much rocks!! My dad complained about how many rocks I bring in the house all the time! He says he doesn't mind as long as I keep them in a box! Collect all the rocks you want!!! I'll collect so many rocks I'll probably need a basement!!! Also that rock at 8:45 is pumice! There lots of those. Also next time you rock collect don't tumble any of them they look so nice naturally!
Thanks for your nice comments, George. Although I tumble most of the rocks I find (or slice them up), I don't tumble the Lake Superior agates. I like to keep those the way I found them. I don't mind tumbling agates that other people found though. I'm glad you're finding some cool rocks in your back yard. Are you doing some research to identify them? The rock you pointed out as pumice isn't pumice. We don't have pumice around here that I now of. My wife is a science teacher and has a large piece of pumice in her classroom. It's very light weight for it's size (It's not very dense). This rock was not light weight. Pumice would also be crushed to dust in the big waves in Lake Superior.
@@MichiganRocks Yes. I think your wrong again. Pumice has a hardness of six! No maybe it's something else. Pumice floats so it's not a pumice! It's probably just a Granite. However pumice can be found at beaches. Granites are super common here in Georgia! And no I can't do research on rocks because I live in a place that doesn't really rock collect much. I also know a lot of rocks but Georgia is boring in the suburbs.

You definitely know your rocks just found your channel I'm a rock hound / Arrowhead hunter and collector... I live in Lafayette Indiana and in the creeks I have found Petoskey stones, And pudding stones, As far South as Lafayette central Indiana
That’s cool, I always think of them as more of a Michigan thing. Any tips on arrowhead hunting? My teenage neighbor really wants to find some. We looked in a river yesterday on his grandpa’s property. We found fossils and puddingstones, but no arrowheads.
FYI right after you turned around to go have lunch, that white rock with black spots that you said you were unsure about, might have been Fluorescent Sodalite(aka yooperlite)! 😁
I guess we'll never know. I didn't have a U.V. light last summer when I was there. I got some Yooperlites this year though. None of the Yooperlites I found looked like that black and white rock. Mine were all just gray.

Grand Marais is my favorite place in the world brother. Between snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and hiking; I cannot think of a place I would rather be. However, my shirts are much more Green than yours!!!! fantastic job
I'll forgive the green shirts. I've never been up there in the winter. I'm afraid I won't get home again. I actually prefer the Keweenaw Peninsula for overall beauty, but the rocks are great in both places.

Arrrrg...is it catch and release season on Unakites? I have one broken leg and two bad knees but I would indure a few hour of pain to scour through the wonderful stones on that beach. If you bring a small gardening shovel you can sit in one spot on the sand and find gems hidden from the eyes of other seekers. It may sound like you won't find much but you WILL find a few unique surprises. And where are your insulated waiters? That water must be a whole 38 degrees. Its good to see visions of Yooperland. Haven't visited the UP in over 40 years.
I have tumbled a ton of unakite. I love unakite, but I got tired of tumbling the same thing all the time. So now I just grab a couple really nice pieces and leave the rest behind. I did grab a couple to slab though. I couldn't bring myself to throw the waders in the Jeep in June. The water was really cold though.
@@MichiganRocks I didn't understand your stony situation. I've only had a couple of hunts but I'm hooked. Can't get enough green color in stone as far as I'm concerned. I've got epidote running through basalt but usually it's combined with granite. Have you found any lake diamonds? Oops...if you did best not to tell anyone.
Man that rock at 12:50 was crazy cool! Every rock like that or pretty much every rock you pick up but then discard take them home and ship them to me! I think the flat rate package may not have weight limits! I’ll pay you a finders fee and shipping obviously!
There is a store in Grand Marais that has agates and they can tell you if you've found an agate or not! There is also a brewery in Grand Marais that has agates as decor. Happy hunting!!!
I always drive into Grand Marais and then head east from there. I stopped in to see Karen at the agate shop, but she was on spring hours and not open yet. I didn’t want to back track, so I didn’t go back. One of the LSA Facebook groups confirmed that my maygate was indeed an agate. :)
@@brownlauren15 The Grand Sable dunes? I've been there. Problem is, they're in the Pictured Rocks National Park, so there's no rock collecting allowed. I might have to go back just to check out the falls and dunes. It's been a while since I've been there.
Just watched this one again and the wife and I both went "NO!!!!!" when you returned the bluish rock near the beginning. Which jumpstarted my idea you should livestream an interactive video, because we often see rocks in your videos we'd like you to pick up, but you don't see what we see. So, crazy idea, probably impossible to stream from your usual beaches, but.....
I have actually thought about doing that, but as you said, cell reception is usually nonexistent where I hunt. This part of the state in particular is very sparsely populated and has almost no cell reception. I'll have to keep it in mind in the future when I might be in a good location. The other problem I see with this is that my typical beach hunts last for 2-7 hours. I'd say 4-5 is pretty typical. What you see is the best parts compressed into 15-20 minutes. My videos might not be nearly as impressive if you saw how sparse the really interesting rocks can be. In between there are a lot of common and maybe not as interesting rocks. Then again, just because I'm not interested in the common rocks in my area, other people from other parts of the world might be interested.
I have been watching these videos and I am amazed how rich and unique the stones are I’m motivated to go Lake Ontario and Lake Huron and go stone hunting
That is right by my cabin!!! The tree fall Is cause by erosion. I’ve hunted rock all along there my whole life we also would jump off the cliffs there into the soft sand and climb the fallen trees back up. That road you walked down in the beginning used to T into another road that is now gone.
Nice vid. Even though the agates are easier to see on the beach, I agree the water is the best place the look. The reason is the beach has probably been picked through, but the water not as much. I actually stopped looking for agates many years ago as I find it easier to "hunt" them on ebay. Good deals can be had on ebay for the patient bidder who knows what to do. Sure they cost money, but I have acquired a bunch of good sized ones in the 12 to 15 oz range that were very affordable, and were all agate. I could never have found as nice ones looking on my own.
RJ Walker that’s very true if your goal is to just accumulate a collection. I really enjoy the thrill of finding one though. I’d really love to get into a Minnesota gravel pit to hunt. That’s where the really good ones are found.
@@MichiganRocks Yes, I live in Minnesota and can understand your thrill of finding one on your own. It feels like a new discovery. Plus there is the thrill of the hunt. I found alot when I was young, but the problem was most were small, I couldn't find many big ones. I found one in a farmers field (a friend of our family) where he had plowed but hadn't cleared the rocks yet. That was 9 to 10 oz and was my biggest. (If you know a farmer who has a rocky field, that's a great place to find good ones too I think. ) But on ebay I hunt for ones in the 10 oz plus range up to a pound or so that are affordable. It's kind of a different hunt. Bigger than a pound is where they all begin to get really expensive.
@@MichiganRocks Good point ! I have to admit though where you were looking was really beautiful. Even if you had found nothing, it wouldn't be a total loss. Kind of like going fishing on a beautiful lake.
The large driftwood areas are the best to search, because most people avoid them. The large pieces in the water can trap and tumble stones as well. Downside is, I've spotted some pieces that took a bit of work to get to.
If I spot a piece, I'll get to it. I love a challenge. I do spend some time looking around logs and going past them. If the beach is hard to through, a lot of people will turn around at that point. I see that as an opportunity to hunt less hunted territory.
Rock at 2:50 is a tough one to call. As far as I can see from your video, it looks like a "jasper". Jasper can have many colors and shapes. In this case, it alternates blue and red hues, which is common. It is noteworthy that this sample exhibits more than one direction of fracturing, which is consistent with being subjected to more than one episode of of tectonic pressure during and after its formation. We all know that Jasper in this area is very old, and it underwent many episodes of tectonic events. Rock at 4:30 is "granite gneiss", which is a metamorphic rock that forms when granite is subjected to excessive temperature and pressure forcing it to form bands and lenses. Rock at 8:45 is "diorite". Usually, it won't have much of the white (quartz) overall. However, because most of the dark mafic (rich in magnesium = Ma + iron = Fe; hence "mafic") minerals (pyroxenes/hornblendes) are easier to weather away with time, you end up with a piece of diorite that is almost composed of quartz (very resistant to weathering) that interlocks some of the mafic minerals. In this case, I believe that the long black crystals are amphibole (common hornblende mineral).
I don't think the rock at 2:50 is jasper. It's translucent, or at least part of it is. Jasper is opaque, right? I'd love to figure out what that stuff is though. I just got back from three days of hunting this area. That stuff is all over the place. I'm pretty sure the rock at 4:30 is not gneiss. I see a lot of gneiss, and none of it looks like this. Gneiss also doesn't tumble very well and this stuff did. I think you're right about the diorite. Thanks for the ID. I appreciate the time you take to share your knowledge.
That blue one at 2:42 is most likely Michigan Pierwrsite. That piece looks like it was very high quality. It doesn’t tumble but it cuts well into cabochons

I would love to know what that rock is because I see it all the time in that area and it always catches my eye. Let me correct myself. Pietersite is a variety of Quartz, composed naturally of Tiger’s Eye, Hawk’s Eye and Jasper, and is characterized by an incredible chatoyancy and brilliance of life within the stone. Its dominant gold hues are contrasted with deep blue-black, grey and brown, as well as occasional clear areas. The blue color is the most rare variety of Pietersite.
@@pokz5387 I just looked up pietersite and the rock in the video does look similar. I tried to find something saying it can be found in Lake Superior, but I can't find anything. How do you know that's what this is? I'm pretty excited that I may have finally found the name of this rock but I want to be sure it's correct.
I can’t find anything online but there are vendors that say they’re selling Michigan pietersite on Etsy. Also just based on the geology and minerals present it is possible. Every mineral that makes up pietersite is essentially variations of quartz. I have no concrete proof and I’m not a geologist yet so I can’t be for sure. But it gives me the same energies and looks very similar.
I live right on the the American side of Lake Ontario and I love just getting round stones but the best I have ever found is a medium size piece of apetite which I’m in love with,summer come fast I wanna find more!
Michigan Rocks hm it really depends,they are most common on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario so as long as it doesn’t shatter while washing up,it’s already decently tumbled and at any kind of size as I have seen
Ludwig van Beethoven that’s the one I called a “maygate” in the video. The “Lake Superior Agate Collectors” group on Facebook assures me that it’s an agate.
2:35 rock looks like a combination of sodalite and calcite with dark brown red iron. Sodalite is blue and flurecses under UV light. Sometimes I have found sodalite combined with brown chert.

Is there a way to pin ypur location? Trespassing is still occurring at a high rate. At least 2 groups per week based off your video.

We put in the coordinates and it goes to state land but your followers are not going there. Your coordinates are at the end of Deer Lane and that is state land and that is correct but people are going to the end of Sandy Lane which is private. Would you be able to change the video to give step by step directions? School Forrest rd just over the sucker river turn right on Deer Lane and follow it to the end. Do not go on Sandy Lane.

I'm really sorry to cause so much stress! If I took them all home, my house would sink. I've gotten a lot better at telling myself "no" over the years. I used to bring way too much home. Now I'm more of a catch and release guy.

I too get very distressed when he drops them back in. I even see rocks he doesn't pick up--that I would love to have. I live in south central Iowa...and there is nothing here to collect. Southeast Iowa has geodes, but here just south of Des Moines, absolutely nothing. Even the creek banks and rivers here have nothing but mud. I guess if I am going to find anything, I will have to drive north a little ways to find it.

Nice way to warm up, exposed driftwood gets nice and warm in that direct sunshine! Another fantastic 15 minutes at the lake!

My brother and I each found very yellow stones (cooked corn colored) in Lake Michigan. Assuming they're citrine, since they have a semi-transparent look and are smooth. Any thoughts on this? I've never seen anything like them before!

Those sound like quartz to me. My wife bought a metal daisy sculpture to put in our daughter's room after she moved out. It's just black iron and I generally like it, except that the centers of all the flowers are gaudy plastic diamonds. I want to replace them with yellow cabochons, but she insists that they be yellow like a daisy. I have taken several yellow quartz rocks home and cut them, but they are almost all white inside. The yellow color on most of them is only on the surface. I have found a couple that were more orange colored throughout. None of these has been yellow enough for my wife's approval for the daisies though.

I can't even begin to describe how beautifully clear the water is and how blue green it is!! One of the rocks you threw back was banded agate it had beautiful bands running through it. Never even heard of unakite or omarolluk rocks before. All were just amazing and the scenery was beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
I may have thrown back a banded rock, but I doubt any were agates.
I have yet to find better content on UA-cam, the amazing quality, relaxing waves and geology subject matter!

Some similar youtubers IMO display a feel of non realistic over excitement. It’s actually annoying to me. These videos in general are very relaxing and enjoyable.
I was in Grand Marias a few days ago looking for agates and yooperlites. Succeeded in finding agates, but failed at yooperlites because I had the wrong uv light, as well as massive competition with better uv lights…

Ancient American Artifact Preservation Society does an annual convention in Escanaba and it's supposed to be a big part this year... in October. Amazing stuff! And thank you again! This is amazing!

Very nice - I have to say Grand Marais is one of my most favourite places in the WORLD! Not sure why, but I love Lake Superior, so clean and pristine in the UP, and can be so quiet and the beaches are lovely - looks as if there's been some rough weather of late?... And don't forget that AIR! Magnificient! I lived on Lake Michigan for 5-years (then 6 in Chicago) & am now way south! Hope you found some neat rocks - plenty of lovely ones to choose from!
I couldn't tell you about rough weather because I'm from south of the bridge. I completely agree about how nice that area and Lake Superior are. I love visiting there.
@@MichiganRocks The last time we were up there, the snow started flying, which made my parents get a bit anxious, but it was only October - but I surely wouldn't want to be there in the depths of winter as that cold is tough to bare - though I lived in Muskegon & St Joe, so I know how it gets with the wind and snow. The pebbles and the water always seem more magical up there. Enjoy - I always think MI and WI are very underrated States!

The rock at 12:21, a "ma-gate", is an entire agate nodule! You are only seeing the banding in a few spots because that is were the host rock has been worn down to the agate embedded within. A great find!
andi hales I posted a picture of it on the FaceBook group, Lake Superior Agate Collectors and they also said it was an agate. I’m a once or twice a year agate hunter, so I have trouble with the ones that aren’t obvious. Thanks for the help!
So beautiful. Just found you today through a post from a childhood friend who lives on Higgins Lake. She collects a lot of the pudding stones. I love that you always wear a Michigan shirt. I grew up in Michigan but lived many years all over the US as a Military wife. My heart has always remained in my homeland though. As I've always heard "you can take the girl out of Michigan, but you will never take Michigan out of the girl" I get so homesick. I traveled home in late September and early October 2017. Other than seeing family for a few days we spent the week traveling up the coast of Lake Huron, spent a night in alpena and then made our way to Grand Marais. (My first time ever traveling the UP) The weather was so gorgeous for that time of year! God was definitely blessing me on this trip. We walked the beaches there along Lake Superior and did some rock hunting. It was hard to leave so many beautiful stones and rocks there in the water since we flew into Michigan I knew I couldn't carry much onto the plane. Watching your video just brought back some very nice memories. I will for sure continue to watch! Thank you! And oh, by the way, I did bring back just a dozen or so favorites including a really nice fossil and a Petoskey stone. The guy checking my bag in Detroit says "you have rocks in your bag?!" When I told him I had to take a little bit of home with me back to Colorado, he just smiled, zipped up my bag and told me to have a good flight. It was the best trip I'd taken in years!💕🙂💕

Next time you come to Michigan, just fill a flat rate box with rocks and mail them home. The flat rate boxes are the best way to send rocks because the weight doesn't matter.
I used to have permission at a northern Michigan gravel pit. I only went in the rainy weather. When everything looked polished.
That's why I like looking in the water.

That's a part of the state I should make more of an effort to get to. The only place I have hunted near there is the Pilgrim Haven Natural Area. I really enjoyed it.
That is Gods country. My parents made a home movie in 1956 of our crossing the lake on a ferry boat while they were building the bridge in the background at Mackinac.
My wife's parents talk about crossing in the ferry before the bridge too. It's been there as long as I can remember. A ferry ride sure would add a lot of time to a U.P. trip.
You could start a business chartering rock hunting on the Great Lakes.
After watching your videos it puts quite a thirst in a body to come up there to walk on those beaches, hear the waves, see the beautiful scenery and discover amazing rocks!
It doesn’t really require a guide to do. The rock hunting always looks better when you edit several hours down to 15 minutes or so. Just go to a beach and have some fun.

Cool video. Cold, in fact. You chose a weird time of year to drive from Texas to Minnesota to look for rocks. I'd suggest next time to come up this way in the summer. Of course, you didn't have to deal with bugs by doing it your way.
Are you aware that there are two places called Grand Marais, and both have agates? This video is in Michigan, but the other Grand Marais is in Minnesota. If you're looking for rocks, they're both good, although I've never been to the one in Minnesota. If you come to Michigan for beautiful scenery, I'd suggest the Keweenaw Peninsula. They have lots of cool rocks there and the views are really pretty. The Grand Marais area is nice but it lacks the hills that the western U.P. has.

@@BEXIVLOGS A cross country trip certainly is spontaneous. I thought it was a really good video. Did you have to get permission to hunt the gravel pit? I hear gravel pits are the best place to hunt agates. Of course, active pits are going to have more new stuff exposed all the time, but I'd even settle for an abandoned one.

I miss Lake Superior so much. I am older now and live in Florida. Walked those beaches a lot in my youth and found a nice share of agates. Too bad I didn’t know Yooperlites existed in my youth. Lake Superior State Forrest campground is my favorite camping spot! Can be difficult getting a site. Your homemade rock picker is awesome as well!! I remember when they started making them commercially, $59 is pretty steep!! I bought an old ski pole and attached a spaghetti spoon to it. Bent the "fins" on the spoon outward a bit, works GREAT!!! Haven't been able to head up there in a couple years so your vids help!! Thank you!!
PS the curve just to the east of the campground, there is a two track that continues east along the lake. Another great boondocking spot! ❤️

I looked at those trees for quite a while, when I was trying to figure out how to get back up. I needed a plan before I jumped off a four foot vertical sandy bank. Luckily, there is a ladder.

Ask Katydid what the rock is called ...if she doesn't know she can make up some hilarious names for it as you did with the "magate" lol. I refuse to wear boots in June. The rest of my body was warm at least. It’s hard to mess up a video when there’s beautiful stuff everywhere. I can’t wait to get back up there.

Enjoyed your video, my wife and I were at that stretch of beach last September, this year we're going to try our luck in the Copper Harbor area. Oh that was a very nice Agate too.
I go to Copper Harbor every summer too. My sister lives in Lake Linden which is only about an hour away. That area is beautiful. If you’re passing through Marquette on the way, be sure to stop at Canyon Falls. It’s a roadside park about halfway between Marquette and Houghton.

You'll want to get a map of the different waterfalls in the u p, because some of them and I remember maybe Munising was one of them.... you have to hike a little bit to get to it
iwantthetruth andnothingbut I just bought a book of 199 waterfalls in Michigan. Only one is in the lower peninsula, and it’s about an hour from my house, so I should be all set. Munising is probably my best bet because I can do the ice caves and several waterfalls in the area. My sister, mom, and son live in Marquette, so it’s not too far to go to have a free bed to sleep in.

Love this vid, watched several times! Thought I’d share...it’s Oct 25, and we’ve been in the area for a few days, taking in the spectacular colors & of course the ROCKS! One of our fav places is Grand Marais beach (Woodland Park access). Very grateful to find some stunning agates here today!!! In our experience, best time to come is off-season & just after some rough currents ☀️
I usually get there in mid June. I'm a teacher, so I have trouble getting there other times of the year. I'd love to go in October or November when the biggest storms come through or in the spring after the ice has rearranged the rocks.
I do recall you are a teacher, and am sure this is a difficult time for you to get away. I would love to come up here sometime after the thaw, like you mentioned. My above post was just FYI for your other followers- hope that’s ok with you?

I love geology!!!! It's so cool! Ameture geology is very huge!! I love your channel and its time watching you it!!!!Im 12 and i really wish to be collecting rocks. I collect rocks from my back yard all the time!!! They aren't as good however! Also there's no such thing as collecting to much rocks!! My dad complained about how many rocks I bring in the house all the time! He says he doesn't mind as long as I keep them in a box! Collect all the rocks you want!!! I'll collect so many rocks I'll probably need a basement!!! Also that rock at 8:45 is pumice! There lots of those. Also next time you rock collect don't tumble any of them they look so nice naturally!
Thanks for your nice comments, George. Although I tumble most of the rocks I find (or slice them up), I don't tumble the Lake Superior agates. I like to keep those the way I found them. I don't mind tumbling agates that other people found though.
I'm glad you're finding some cool rocks in your back yard. Are you doing some research to identify them? The rock you pointed out as pumice isn't pumice. We don't have pumice around here that I now of. My wife is a science teacher and has a large piece of pumice in her classroom. It's very light weight for it's size (It's not very dense). This rock was not light weight. Pumice would also be crushed to dust in the big waves in Lake Superior.
@@MichiganRocks Yes. I think your wrong again. Pumice has a hardness of six! No maybe it's something else. Pumice floats so it's not a pumice! It's probably just a Granite. However pumice can be found at beaches. Granites are super common here in Georgia! And no I can't do research on rocks because I live in a place that doesn't really rock collect much. I also know a
lot of rocks but Georgia is boring in the suburbs.

Good luck. It was a pretty easy project. I just attached a slotted spoon to the end of a piece of PVC pipe.
Michigan Rocks oh ok I thought you had a metal spoon and bent the handle and taped in like that . But the pvc would last a lot longer thank you . I was telling the wife about it cause after a lil bit my hips are killing me so the less I bend over the better thanks

You definitely know your rocks just found your channel I'm a rock hound / Arrowhead hunter and collector... I live in Lafayette Indiana and in the creeks I have found Petoskey stones, And pudding stones, As far South as Lafayette central Indiana
That’s cool, I always think of them as more of a Michigan thing. Any tips on arrowhead hunting? My teenage neighbor really wants to find some. We looked in a river yesterday on his grandpa’s property. We found fossils and puddingstones, but no arrowheads.

I guess we'll never know. I didn't have a U.V. light last summer when I was there. I got some Yooperlites this year though. None of the Yooperlites I found looked like that black and white rock. Mine were all just gray.

Grand Marais is my favorite place in the world brother. Between snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and hiking; I cannot think of a place I would rather be. However, my shirts are much more Green than yours!!!! fantastic job
I'll forgive the green shirts. I've never been up there in the winter. I'm afraid I won't get home again. I actually prefer the Keweenaw Peninsula for overall beauty, but the rocks are great in both places.

Arrrrg...is it catch and release season on Unakites? I have one broken leg and two bad knees but I would indure a few hour of pain to scour through the wonderful stones on that beach. If you bring a small gardening shovel you can sit in one spot on the sand and find gems hidden from the eyes of other seekers. It may sound like you won't find much but you WILL find a few unique surprises. And where are your insulated waiters? That water must be a whole 38 degrees. Its good to see visions of Yooperland. Haven't visited the UP in over 40 years.
I have tumbled a ton of unakite. I love unakite, but I got tired of tumbling the same thing all the time. So now I just grab a couple really nice pieces and leave the rest behind. I did grab a couple to slab though. I couldn't bring myself to throw the waders in the Jeep in June. The water was really cold though.
@@MichiganRocks I didn't understand your stony situation. I've only had a couple of hunts but I'm hooked. Can't get enough green color in stone as far as I'm concerned. I've got epidote running through basalt but usually it's combined with granite. Have you found any lake diamonds? Oops...if you did best not to tell anyone.

Man that rock at 12:50 was crazy cool! Every rock like that or pretty much every rock you pick up but then discard take them home and ship them to me! I think the flat rate package may not have weight limits! I’ll pay you a finders fee and shipping obviously!

There is a store in Grand Marais that has agates and they can tell you if you've found an agate or not! There is also a brewery in Grand Marais that has agates as decor. Happy hunting!!!
I always drive into Grand Marais and then head east from there. I stopped in to see Karen at the agate shop, but she was on spring hours and not open yet. I didn’t want to back track, so I didn’t go back. One of the LSA Facebook groups confirmed that my maygate was indeed an agate. :)

@@brownlauren15 The Grand Sable dunes? I've been there. Problem is, they're in the Pictured Rocks National Park, so there's no rock collecting allowed. I might have to go back just to check out the falls and dunes. It's been a while since I've been there.

Just watched this one again and the wife and I both went "NO!!!!!" when you returned the bluish rock near the beginning. Which jumpstarted my idea you should livestream an interactive video, because we often see rocks in your videos we'd like you to pick up, but you don't see what we see. So, crazy idea, probably impossible to stream from your usual beaches, but.....
I have actually thought about doing that, but as you said, cell reception is usually nonexistent where I hunt. This part of the state in particular is very sparsely populated and has almost no cell reception. I'll have to keep it in mind in the future when I might be in a good location.
The other problem I see with this is that my typical beach hunts last for 2-7 hours. I'd say 4-5 is pretty typical. What you see is the best parts compressed into 15-20 minutes. My videos might not be nearly as impressive if you saw how sparse the really interesting rocks can be. In between there are a lot of common and maybe not as interesting rocks. Then again, just because I'm not interested in the common rocks in my area, other people from other parts of the world might be interested.
I have been watching these videos and I am amazed how rich and unique the stones are I’m motivated to go Lake Ontario and Lake Huron and go stone hunting

Is cause by erosion. I’ve hunted rock all along there my whole life we also would jump off the cliffs there into the soft sand and climb the fallen trees back up. That road you walked down in the beginning used to T into another road that is now gone.

Nice vid. Even though the agates are easier to see on the beach, I agree the water is the best place the look. The reason is the beach has probably been picked through, but the water not as much. I actually stopped looking for agates many years ago as I find it easier to "hunt" them on ebay. Good deals can be had on ebay for the patient bidder who knows what to do. Sure they cost money, but I have acquired a bunch of good sized ones in the 12 to 15 oz range that were very affordable, and were all agate. I could never have found as nice ones looking on my own.
RJ Walker that’s very true if your goal is to just accumulate a collection. I really enjoy the thrill of finding one though. I’d really love to get into a Minnesota gravel pit to hunt. That’s where the really good ones are found.
@@MichiganRocks Yes, I live in Minnesota and can understand your thrill of finding one on your own. It feels like a new discovery. Plus there is the thrill of the hunt. I found alot when I was young, but the problem was most were small, I couldn't find many big ones. I found one in a farmers field (a friend of our family) where he had plowed but hadn't cleared the rocks yet. That was 9 to 10 oz and was my biggest. (If you know a farmer who has a rocky field, that's a great place to find good ones too I think. ) But on ebay I hunt for ones in the 10 oz plus range up to a pound or so that are affordable. It's kind of a different hunt. Bigger than a pound is where they all begin to get really expensive.

The large driftwood areas are the best to search, because most people avoid them. The large pieces in the water can trap and tumble stones as well. Downside is, I've spotted some pieces that took a bit of work to get to.
If I spot a piece, I'll get to it. I love a challenge. I do spend some time looking around logs and going past them. If the beach is hard to through, a lot of people will turn around at that point. I see that as an opportunity to hunt less hunted territory.

It’s right there in the lake waiting for you to go get it! Don’t let the snow bother you.
Rock at 2:50 is a tough one to call. As far as I can see from your video, it looks like a "jasper". Jasper can have many colors and shapes. In this case, it alternates blue and red hues, which is common. It is noteworthy that this sample exhibits more than one direction of fracturing, which is consistent with being subjected to more than one episode of of tectonic pressure during and after its formation. We all know that Jasper in this area is very old, and it underwent many episodes of tectonic events.
Rock at 4:30 is "granite gneiss", which is a metamorphic rock that forms when granite is subjected to excessive temperature and pressure forcing it to form bands and lenses.
Rock at 8:45 is "diorite". Usually, it won't have much of the white (quartz) overall. However, because most of the dark mafic (rich in magnesium = Ma + iron = Fe; hence "mafic") minerals (pyroxenes/hornblendes) are easier to weather away with time, you end up with a piece of diorite that is almost composed of quartz (very resistant to weathering) that interlocks some of the mafic minerals. In this case, I believe that the long black crystals are amphibole (common hornblende mineral).
I don't think the rock at 2:50 is jasper. It's translucent, or at least part of it is. Jasper is opaque, right? I'd love to figure out what that stuff is though. I just got back from three days of hunting this area. That stuff is all over the place.
I'm pretty sure the rock at 4:30 is not gneiss. I see a lot of gneiss, and none of it looks like this. Gneiss also doesn't tumble very well and this stuff did.

That blue one at 2:42 is most likely Michigan Pierwrsite. That piece looks like it was very high quality. It doesn’t tumble but it cuts well into cabochons

Let me correct myself. Pietersite is a variety of Quartz, composed naturally of Tiger’s Eye, Hawk’s Eye and Jasper, and is characterized by an incredible chatoyancy and brilliance of life within the stone. Its dominant gold hues are contrasted with deep blue-black, grey and brown, as well as occasional clear areas. The blue color is the most rare variety of Pietersite.
@@pokz5387 I just looked up pietersite and the rock in the video does look similar. I tried to find something saying it can be found in Lake Superior, but I can't find anything. How do you know that's what this is? I'm pretty excited that I may have finally found the name of this rock but I want to be sure it's correct.
I can’t find anything online but there are vendors that say they’re selling Michigan pietersite on Etsy. Also just based on the geology and minerals present it is possible. Every mineral that makes up pietersite is essentially variations of quartz. I have no concrete proof and I’m not a geologist yet so I can’t be for sure. But it gives me the same energies and looks very similar.

I've never camped there. I camp at the Lake Superior State Forest campground, Reed and Green, or the Mouth of the Two Hearted River most of the time.
I live right on the the American side of Lake Ontario and I love just getting round stones but the best I have ever found is a medium size piece of apetite which I’m in love with,summer come fast I wanna find more!
I have never found any apatite, but that would be cool. Are smaller sized pieces common there?
Michigan Rocks hm it really depends,they are most common on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario so as long as it doesn’t shatter while washing up,it’s already decently tumbled and at any kind of size as I have seen

2:35 rock looks like a combination of sodalite and calcite with dark brown red iron. Sodalite is blue and flurecses under UV light. Sometimes I have found sodalite combined with brown chert.
When I get a U.V. light, I’ll have to check one of those out. Thanks for the tip!
