Not only is this story inspiring but motivating. I started playing the bassoon in junior high school and eventually received a music scholarship to Louisiana State University. I left LSU and music in 1995 when I joined the USAF. 22 years later, after establishing a career, I decided to purchased my first bassoon, a Fox model I. For the past year and a half I’ve been working with a bassoon professor and have fallen in love with playing again. My goal for the future of bassoon playing is to be a member of the Charlotte Symphony. THANK YOU for sharing your story!
this is so inspiring! my story is similar to how i started playing the bassoon! i want to be a professional bassoon player as well and i want to land a job in a symphony orchestra. please share more videos like this!
I had know idea what a bassoon was until one of my friends told me that she wanted to play it. I wanted to play flute, but during my middle school tryout, they broke the horrible news to me that I had a teardrop lip and would never be able to play it. (Which I now know was a load of horseshit) so I, remembering what my friend said, decided I would try the bassoon for shits and giggles. I got the bassoon, and am now entering high school with the full intent on playing it for the rest of my high school life. Maybe in college??? I’ve still got a good four years to decide that.
Hello Hans, The program is "Finale." You can learn more about it at makemusic.com. Makemusic offers several music notation software packages: read carefully about each because not all of them offer a music playback feature. Best of luck! Michael Sweeney.
I'm a 9th grade bassoonist, he writes so many pieces and I never knew he played bassoon!
Elite Wolf I believe this is a different one...
Turner Sugg Oh, I thought it was the composer Michael Sweeny.

That experience he mentions is the same I get when listening to great music. The self disappears.

I wanted to play bassoon sooo bad! I had to go with tuba, since it was so expensive to rent.
I was curious about what software program is being used at 0:32 and any information you may have of that music software. Thanks!

Anyone know the song around the 1:51 mark?
Dakari Bass Mahler Symphony No. 5 3rd Movement
when did he start playing the bassoon
He said some time in high school
The same michael sweeney whose name is on sheet music everywhere?
No. I am Michael Sweeney the bassoonist. There is a Michael Sweeney who is a composer and arranger. We have the same name so there is some confusion.
I always upvote Gustav Holst!
