  • WARNING! heat guns get very hot!! there is a definite fire danger because of the materials used in this project!! I used a bed caster wheel for the roller which is probably not the best material because of the direct heat. A piece of 1" steel round stock would be ideal. there is also a risk of the wood getting to hot during extended use. All that being said i have used it a lot without any issue but i am constantly checking making sure nothing get to hot.

I recently have a need for an edge bander because of an upcoming kitchen project. Looking around and looks like the cheapest bander you will find is about 400 buck (to much for me). I used materials I already had lying around the house and bought a 20 dollar heat gun. I am really surprised how will this works and it should make my kitchen project go much faster.

What a brilliant solution and with a small modification it could be used to apply edge banding to odd shaped workpieces.

Nice job. Although in my case when I applied PVC edge banding with a hard roler such as this plastic caused dents/waves from the heat. The semi automatic machines used by the small shops here have a thick rubber roller.

Hi ShopBuild, thanks a lot for this video!!! Are you using glue in both band and wood board, before sticking all together, or there is a band with glue already in the market? I am starting some small home projects, here in Brazil, and would like know your comments to achieve good quality. Keep the nice work and stay safe.

With your use of aluminum and having the CNC, you need to look into lost foam casting of aluminum. You could cut out something amazing in the foam with the CNC (maybe a hot knife?) and then cast it in aluminum. Check out The King of Random - Grant Thompson's channel for how he did it.

The only pre glued edge banding worth using is the wood veneer. The polyester pre glued edge band is useless. It's brittle and chips easily. I use contact cement to apply PVC edge tape if My hot glue edge bander is not on hand.
