The mid-20th century saw a mass Jewish exodus from the Middle East and North Africa fueled by rising antisemitism, nationalism, and conflict, leading to the near erasure of vibrant Jewish communities that had flourished in the region for centuries. Prior to this exodus, Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Yemen had significant Jewish populations that existed in this region for over 3,000 years.
Understanding that Jews are native to the Middle East is crucial, not only to acknowledge their historical ties and contributions but also to contextualize contemporary issues of identity and belonging in a region often marked by division. Recognizing this shared history is essential in the fight against disinformation about the Middle Eastern Jews and antisemitism worldwide.
This panel will commemorate the Day to Mark the Departure or Expulsion of Jews from the Arab Lands and Iran, both with personal family stories from our panelists and a focus on the historical background of the expulsion, as well as stories of hope and courage as exemplified by Arab individuals and communities who supported and protected their Jewish neighbors.
