  • In this TEDxOldHickory talk, Kayla Slavens discusses how the use of SEL in the classroom can really help children use their voices. So many times school turns into an intimidating place with the stress of test scores on students. I am going to be talking about how social emotional learning practices can really help a child feel safe in the classroom. Just by showing students you care about them makes such a big difference. Kayla Slavens is a dedicated hard working first grade teacher hailing from her beloved hometown of Old Hickory, TN. With over a decade of experience in education and teaching at Metro Nashville Public Schools, her passion for helping children reach their full potential has only grown stronger. Recently named Teacher of the Year at her school, Kayla is recognized for her unwavering commitment to providing a voice for every child in her classroom. Her philosophy centers on building children's confidence and helping them recognize their unique value. She believes in all children and lets them know that daily. Kayla's inspiring journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and she couldn't be more excited to share her experiences on the TEDxOldHickory stage. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is so wonderful! I have quite a few favorite teachers - How about Ms. Steen in 6th grade, she merged science and reading. We dove into science and then spent the last 5 minutes of class listening to her read us "Where the red fern grows" - we bonded as a class in a life changing way. Thank you Kayla!

I feel like there's a correlation to business, too. Not allowing employees to feel like a "number" or a "test score". We want to be seen and feel like we matter.
