This is an edited discussion of MGM musicals from Charlie Rose: July 14, 1997. Charlie Rose asks Van about his memories filming "Brigadoon" with Vincente Minnelli , Gene Kelly, and Cyd Charisse. As a young chorus boy, Van was Gene Kelly's understudy for Pal Joey on Broadway. In this clip he is 80 years old and notably hard of hearing but can unquestionably engage his audience. The two photographs at the end of this clip are Clark Gable and Van Johnson playing checkers between takes during the filming of "Command Decision" and an autographed birthday present from Gene Kelly to Van Johnson from Van's personal estate. Van was an avid autograph collector.

Cracked me up telling about Gene’s vanity
Many men are not happy being bald, it is a self-esteem issue more than a vanity issue. There are photos of Gene Kelly directing and choreographing groups of people and he is not wearing his hairpiece so it appears that he was only self-conscious about his baldness on camera which seems perfectly natural since he had a certain 'look' that he had to maintain. John Wayne and James Stewart are two more actors who wore hairpieces on camera and didn't always use them in their private lives.

CLOSELY watch "Heather on the Hill.' There are sooooooo many places where props were moved from one shot to the next. Clothing, flowers - lots of changes.

The interesting thing, because I just came to this from the Dave Letterman interview is that I am fairly certain he is wearing the same Suit here in 1997 as he did back in 1985 - Maybe it really is An old suit of Keenan Wynn's. LOL
