  • FC Girondins de Bordeaux won the Ligue 1 title as recently as 2009, and the following season, they beat both Bayern Munich and Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.
    Now they sit bottom of the Ligue 1 table, having entered administration last season, and are in real danger of danger of dropping down into Ligue 2.
    In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a closer look at Bordeaux, exploring how their downfall came about and where it all went wrong for one of the biggest and most successful football clubs in France.

    I'm really saddened that one, and possibly two, of France's most prestigious clubs are going down and are in peril at this moment in time. I remember the days of Gourcuff lighting it up in Bordeaux and seemingly being the future of French football as the team won the title and was so very close to do it two years in a row, at a time where Ligue 1 was exciting to follow

      first French club I supported because they were the first team I picked in my first ever football game, PES2010. I still some remember that squad (but not the spelling) Gourcuff, Goufran, Chamakh, Trenoulinas, Planus, Plasil.... not household names, but I still can't believe I remember them after 15 years!

    American owners are bad for Euro football because of their pursuit of profit whiles being terribly ignorant of Euro football business model. They think that big money from player sales will goes to their bank account without knowing/understanding that running football club in Europe is expensive because unlike sports in the US, many clubs don't make so much money from ticket sales and commercial deals. In US you can bank loan a billion dollar stadium build and pay it all just from ticket sales (NFL Raiders & Rams comes to mind).

    • @kattharsismic
      @kattharsismic 2 роки тому

      Yeah, they don't get that a football club doesn't print money. It bleeds it. You can only ever be barely profitable if the club is going to have any success. All those owners thinking they'll have a franchise like in the NBA are deluded, with the pyramid system you can't not invest or you're going to see your revenus cut by like 90 percent after going down, no nice draft pick with a big name shirt printing player to get money from being bad either. I don't know what those groups or investors think they'll get from buying football clubs, seems like a bad investment if you're not in it for the glory.

    Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

    It's just sad. I remember when my beloved Frankfurt played there in the 13/14 season, all Frankfurt-supporters dressed in Orange.
    But I'm also happy for Strasbourg. We played against them a couple of years ago. Nice city, nice supporters.

    Bordeaux did get relagated in 2022. It could have got worst for them as they were actually relagated to the third tier due to financial irregularities by the LFP. But after agreeing to a Debt Reconstruction Plan they were reinstated as a Ligue 2 side.

    I think, ligue 1 is the second most exciting amd interesting league in Europe behind the Premier league. Minus PSG, Ligue 1 has the potential to be even better than the prem with teams like Marseille, Nice, Lyon, Rennes, Monaco, Lille and also Bordeaux too. I think the fans are better, there's more competition, the football for the most part is more exciting to watch and all that

      Toulouse fans thinking there’s a rivalry between them and Bordeaux that’s cute. Try to win a championship and go far in Champions League as same as Bordeaux did. Their fall is your only success

    Gerard lopez is also the owner of my team boavista over on portugal. Its very strange it doesnt seem that he invests that much on the team since we are always banned from the january window. The fault is actually on admar lopes the guy who is actually replacing luis campos. But he is week when it comes to build a balanced team. Last year boavista barelly remained on the first tier of portuguese football because admar lopes spent 5 million euros on a centre back from porto, his actual club and the other centre backs were too weak. The midfield and the attack were really good but the team was so unbalanced on defense!!!! The fault is on admar guys
