Grade 6 (2025 & 2026) - All exercises TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS Grade 6 scales are recommended to be played at 72 minim bpm (i.e. 144 crotchet bpm), and arpeggios at 50 minim bpm (i.e. 100 crotchet bpm), which are the tempos played in this video. It is always a good idea to play any new exercise slowly in order to build up a steady pace, gradually increasing the speed until the desired tempo is reached. Ultimately practising with a metronome is even better. Some students might wish to play these exercises at a faster tempo than the one shown in this video, but always keep in mind the importance of control and steadiness. Although candidates only need to choose to play either Harmonic or Melodic minor scales in the exam, both versions have been demonstrated. TOP TIP: Try to encourage your thumb to move gradually underneath the scale as you are playing each note - not waiting until you actually need the note the thumb is responsible for - this way you can build up a looser technique which will take away sudden jerky thumb movements and it will help make faster scale passages easier to play, both in exercises and in pieces. Arpeggios can also benefit from practise with a metronome, but be careful not to swing elbows up in the air when thumbs move under - and watch that your shoulders don’t tense up either, as you should always feel relaxed and in control when playing.
I've been looking for something like this as in recent years I haven't had to practice scales and appregios because I could just play 4 exams pieces. I'm in grade 8 and feel like my technique is declining so this a very helpfulness starting point thank you so much!
