love rhystic study, a couple years back when the first commander decks came out my cousin and I started getting into commander and the second we became aware of this card we knew it would be something that pretty much any EDH deck that ran blue would basically staple this card since there's really no downside to playing it and the upsides are tremendous because you either get to draw a card, have your opponent's spells effectively cost 1 extra or they waste resources trying to get rid of this card, and i say waste because while the effects are powerful, they're not exactly game breaking, there are so many other enchantments and artifacts out there that are win conditions, Rhystic isn't one of them. So whenever we found them we bought out the entire stock in the store we were in (this was back when they were approx. 1-2 dollars a pop CAD). Now Rhystic Study is a 12 dollar card and we're sitting on a huge stockpile, laughing our asses off at how big a profit we made (i don't mean we sold them, we just have SO MANY now and we only paid a dollar for them each). now if only i had that kind of foresight when chromatic lantern was only 3 dollars a pop...
Under rated enchantment is abundance. Such good card selection and it works well with library. You get to "draw" the two extra and don't have to put any back or lose life
I feel like Necropotence should've been on the list because its an insane set up card in any deck running black. But ia understand your decision to put it as an honorable mention
Love your videos!! Just had one suggestion? Lol Would be so helpfull if you could describe the cards (cost/ability). I listen to these videos while at work or driving and im sure many others do too, it just confusing sometimes when i can't keep looking at my phone and have no clue what the cards do lol Cheers
To the people whining about Necro: Yes, Necropotence is as a card broken to all oblivion, but that is precisely the problem. Other players know that too, when you play arena, most would say: "ehhh that is fine", but when necro hits the table it is pretty much as if you would walk into the most leftist joint in the neighbourhood wearing the confederate flag
Agreed. It's so good everyone kills u or attacks u so u don't have life to spend. That to said, their hate is probably validation that it's one of if not the best enchantment. Ie. Top 10.
This is not a bad list at all. Yes you can argue whether Sylvan Library is better than Rhystic Study or not, or whether Necropotence belongs in the top 10 (it does), but it's still a good list. I especially appreciate the wide range of cards in the honorable mentions because really all of these cards are ultra powerful EDH staples and keeping it to just the top 10 would leave out too many of them. Good work!
We have similar trains of thought for 95% of the cards you mentioned. My honorable mentions would have included different enchantments such as grave betrayal, mind's dilation, lurking predators, defense of the heart, and attrition and I probably forget many. But I agree with you that tempo is important. You might be playing the most bad ass cards in magic, if you can't get never draw it or are mana screwed it won't help. Card draw, library fixing, and tutoring is so important.
I mean sylvan library is played in literally every green deck. It should definitely be number 1, survival is powerful. But it's not in every green deck. Just like rhystic study in blue decks
Sylvan Library is like a green enchantment version of Sensei's Divining Top- sooo much advantage, and 3 card peeking is sweet even when you choose not to draw the extras. It may be dumb to pay 8 life per turn and whiff a combo on turn 4 or 5, but just knowing/setting up what you get to draw next is phenomenal in green.
Needs an update now with Smothering Tithe and Search for Azcanta somewhere in the top10 or honorable mentions. My personal top10 is, with no particular order, PhxArena, Sylvan Library, Land tax, Search for Azcanta, Smothering Tithe, Rhystic Study, Price of Glory, War Tolls, Dictate, Aura Shards
13:05 deck thinning isn't normally relevant in Commander, it's just that the amount of thinning that Land Tax can provide is so absurd that it becomes relevant
I spent the whole time wondering when Rhystic Study would show up. IMO some more oppressive cards like Contamination deserve at least an honorable mention- I don't particularly like it, but it can singlehandedly cut players out.
I personally don't understand why Survival of the Fittest is not banned in EDH. It's amazing. Also do expensive. A decent budget alternative is the Origins card, Evolutionary Leap.
Very good list. Only one I would add (atleast to honorable mentions) would be Back to Basics. That card is just crushing in commander and I must say not a fun card for your opponents which is why I sold mine :).
Jason collins thanks. If I were to go that route then I would have to include stasis which is arguable the most cancerous enchantment along side the likes of contamination.
I was referring to your honorable mentions where you use arguments why cards did not make the list, while other cards IN the list have the previous arguments applicable to. I mean these lists are always a personal point of view, but it felt the reasoning was contradicting at times.
Play a test game. Have 3 swamp and Necropotance in hand at the start. On turn 3 play Necropotance and activate it 10 times. Pass the turn and pick witch 7 you're gonna keep. That answer your question?
It says: Have a full hand every turn, for only three Mana. You don't skip your draw step, it moves to the end of your turn, and you draw as much as you want instead of 1 card just by paying life.
Ok, thats understandable, when you phrase it that way, its reasonable. But as i said earlier its hard to create something everyone will agree with, and considering that, i believe he did a good job
For me aura of silence has been overperforming like crazy every single time I played it. Making your friends spend their whole turn playing their signet... and the following obligatory threat of blowing up said signet. Just the best for the sadists out there.
I am pretty sure Omniscience is a finisher. There has only been one game I have seen where a person didn't win when they played it. They lost because they had to pass and then I went off with grave stuff and they couldn't counter it.
rhystic study, sylvan library and necropotence are my most obvious bets, i dont know how much you care for pillowfort cards to guess something like propaganda, but im guessing maybe land tax and that other white enchantment that makes all creatures become 1/1. edit: and maybe carpet of flowers. edit 2: ooh, no necropotence, also i think you should have mentioned mystic remora.
I will say privileged position should definitely be on the top 10 because there have been a million times where we all lost to Ghave with that out on the field and it was problematic
Yeah, but when we were trying to find ways to even interrupt the combos, the privileged position made everything but that impossible to deal with, since he had a whole bunch of threatening enchantments that we equally didn't know what to do about. I will say, Ghave definitely kills through combos
No Defense of the Heart? Got a 2 creature combo that immediately wins you the game (Mikeus/Triskellion for example)? Go get it and win.... Obviously there's many other synergies but.......
Evan Floyd yeah but I think they deserve honorable mention. They aren't the most powerful card on the list. That said if your building an edh deck those two are relevant cards for slower decks.
"There are not enough Gravepact-Effects"... I honestly think its one of the most un-fun mechanics in MTG because its not usually used to punish oversteps, more like "i play gravepact, i sacrifice 20 not relivant tokens to ashnods altar, you loose all your creatures and i cast *insert smth big here*" Honestly just not fun imo
I think its a good list, with a lot of odd rationale. Like really odd - bordering on bad, but not consistently.. On the good side is your rationale for Exploration and Burgeoning. Perhaps the universal lesson to callout would be that "situational" or "limited usability" cards do not belong in the list. These two cards are win cards in certain commanders, but largely bad includes in most others. It would help if you used this logic to explain your other choices a bit more consistently. On the strange side.... 1) Propaganda and Ghostly Prison are key elements for core strategies common to control - one of the main playstyles of magic. You might still be right that they are lower on the list, but you say a lot of odd things as to why. Denial of your opponent is a major strategy in control. It seems like you are dismissing it with a very narrow point of view. Be more open minded imo. Or alternately, call a spade a spade. These are not in the list because they are not as powerful as the rest. 2) Food Chain, Necropotence, and Sneak Attack are a great example of what I'm highlighting. These cards all could belong in the list if it is a list of "most powerful". So it's confusing when you dismiss them at all. But if you were to articulate that they do not fit because they are situational or limited usability, you would be getting somewhere. However, even that is not enough. What makes these three cards not fit with the rest of your list is that they "force" a playstyle. They are not nearly as versatile as the other enchantments you include. 3) Finally, Asceticism, and Privileged literally do things to help you try to win the game, they work in nearly any deck that can use them, they do not force your playstyle, and in the case of Asceticism at least, the card really is one of the most relevant cards for any green commander. Your rationale for excluding these just doesn't make sense. That said, i agree that both are lower than all ten you list. So its just your rationale that seems odd.
it's not that good Imao; I mean if you play read the bones you have the same effect as three turns maybe four as phyrexian arena but it's at once and you loose less life. I think Phyrexian arena is overestimated by a lot
This seems kinda biased to green, white and black. Only one red card not even in the real list / Two blue cards in the real list. I think this guy got junked and is a bit salty so he is trying to convince the rest of his playgroup to go after that guy. #whenploiticsgotofar
henko otto what do you think is the best red enchantment? I'm pretty partial to Aggravated Assault, Mana Echoes, Shared Animosity, and Purphoros. 2 of those are tribal based, and one requires fast creatures like tokens, but I love playing just one of these per game and then watching the enchantment close out 4 way games over and over. It's super fun :D
love rhystic study, a couple years back when the first commander decks came out my cousin and I started getting into commander and the second we became aware of this card we knew it would be something that pretty much any EDH deck that ran blue would basically staple this card since there's really no downside to playing it and the upsides are tremendous because you either get to draw a card, have your opponent's spells effectively cost 1 extra or they waste resources trying to get rid of this card, and i say waste because while the effects are powerful, they're not exactly game breaking, there are so many other enchantments and artifacts out there that are win conditions, Rhystic isn't one of them. i used to buy sylvan library for 10 bucks a piece just a few years ago it seems now they are 40....im glad i invested early. love that card so much.
I get them for less than $2, mint condition, from Legends. From China.

J-F Allard Lurking Predators is for some reason an overperformer in my playgroup XD I get out creatures like crazy
Yeah I know, I don't get how people don't play it more in creature-based decks. My animar certainly loves it ;)
I wasn't sold on why Rhystic Study placed where it did, but after your explanation, I agree. That card secretly wins games if it's left unchecked.
With those cards I have ramped out to omnath locus of rage on turn 2 and became the biggest threat at the table XD
I mean sylvan library is played in literally every green deck. It should definitely be number 1, survival is powerful. But it's not in every green deck. Just like rhystic study in blue decks

I bought a Rhystic Study in a pile of commons for 5 cents when I started. Now its around 8 bucks?? Wow.
now it's twenty!

osuasheuatl contamination is cancer bro. Plus I'd also have to mention blood moon and take more time talking about cancer.
Zendikar Resurgent is an up and coming Commander all star I think.
MTG Matrix it's a good option
I personally don't understand why Survival of the Fittest is not banned in EDH. It's amazing. Also do expensive. A decent budget alternative is the Origins card, Evolutionary Leap.
Zendikar resurgence is a good, double mana and a card draw engine
Very good list. Only one I would add (atleast to honorable mentions) would be Back to Basics. That card is just crushing in commander and I must say not a fun card for your opponents which is why I sold mine :).
Jason collins thanks. If I were to go that route then I would have to include stasis which is arguable the most cancerous enchantment along side the likes of contamination.
Jason collins. he isnt a fan of stax cards. he views the format as more of an arms race from what I could gather during the ghostly prison part.
in the first few minutes you keep contradicting yourself in the reasons why the honorable mentions did not make the list....
How so?
Sorry peter, Voidmage knows what he was talking about. It's really difficult to find a universal list everyone will agree with. You be you void👍
Shrek's Father why thank you
At least he has an honorable mention, he doesn't even need to have that.
I was referring to your honorable mentions where you use arguments why cards did not make the list, while other cards IN the list have the previous arguments applicable to.

Hope Mask. Look it up it does wonders against mono black.
I should have expected Rhystic Study, its such a good meme
There's not a single blue deck Rhystic Study doesn't go in.
...would you like to supersize that?
Can someone please explain why necropotence is so good?!?
It doesn't say once per turn.
Try it in Oloro and get back to me.
immortally insane lol right. I was actually making an oloro deck right now

Ok, thats understandable, when you phrase it that way, its reasonable. But as i said earlier its hard to create something everyone will agree with, and considering that, i believe he did a good job
Omniscience only an honorable mention? Talk about power! Free spells forever is ridiculous. The card might as well say "I win".
For me aura of silence has been overperforming like crazy every single time I played it. Making your friends spend their whole turn playing their signet... and the following obligatory threat of blowing up said signet. Just the best for the sadists out there.
Mystic Remora should at least be an honorable mention on this list.
I am pretty sure Omniscience is a finisher. There has only been one game I have seen where a person didn't win when they played it. They lost because they had to pass and then I went off with grave stuff and they couldn't counter it.
Top 10 enchantments and top 500 honorable mentions
Has anyone else tried to play Transcendence and Nefarious Lich together?
How has land tax not gotten reprinted
It was reprinted not that long ago in battlebond
rhystic study, sylvan library and necropotence are my most obvious bets, i dont know how much you care for pillowfort cards to guess something like propaganda, but im guessing maybe land tax and that other white enchantment that makes all creatures become 1/1.
edit: and maybe carpet of flowers.
edit 2: ooh, no necropotence, also i think you should have mentioned mystic remora.
No honorable mention for Invoke Prejudice?
How does Privileged Position not help you win the game?
Sneak attack and conjuring closet?
Kinda like Grave Pact better. The flash is nice but getting out grave pact sooner is just too good.
david saraj fair enough
Voidmage Gamer
I can definitely see the pros of both. Flash is great on an enchantment like Dictate. Just my two cents. Enjoy your vids man.
david saraj thanks bro
Honorable mention to dream halls?
i want to learn how to play commander..
irish mexican land lord we can chat about it if you down.
Cygnus Vismund how so??
a commander deck has 100 cards
1 card is the commander and is placed in the command zone
the other 99 are your library as usual
irish mexican land lord there's a lot to the rules for deck building. watch ( the command zone ) on UA-cam
Cygnus Vismund are there other rules?? it can't be as simple as that..
I will say privileged position should definitely be on the top 10 because there have been a million times where we all lost to Ghave with that out on the field and it was problematic
Justin Sullivan lost to ghave almost exclusively by combos.
Yeah, but when we were trying to find ways to even interrupt the combos, the privileged position made everything but that impossible to deal with, since he had a whole bunch of threatening enchantments that we equally didn't know what to do about. I will say, Ghave definitely kills through combos
Xenagos wins me games on the spot. That dude plus overrujn/overwhelmingstampede/triumphofthehorde gets me a whole lot of hate
Why is Rhystic Study only 20 dollars
No Defense of the Heart? Got a 2 creature combo that immediately wins you the game (Mikeus/Triskellion for example)? Go get it and win.... Obviously there's many other synergies but.......
It could be nice a chapter of, the ten Best political cards in the format
Thanks Void!
Pestilent is my best enchantment as everyone dies a bit more every turn
I'm pretty partial to propaganda or ghostly prison but they're not nearly as powerful as some on the list.
Evan Floyd no mercy is fun two one flashed on in when someone swung at me with there whole board
Evan Floyd yeah but I think they deserve honorable mention. They aren't the most powerful card on the list. That said if your building an edh deck those two are relevant cards for slower decks.

Three LANDS
Rhystic Study is such a lame card to include. "Did you pay one? did you pay one? Did you pay one?" It slows the game down and is so obnoxious.
Doesnt really slow it down. They should remember the tax or The studys user has to remind them.
Fastbond
Unfortunately it's banned in commander.
