  • Plumber. Plumbing video. Pex Plumbing pipe installation. how to instal pex pipe. PEX-Al-PEX system. Multipex
In my day in the life as a plumber video, I were installing some pipework, and there was a lot of questions on the pipework. In the UK, we call MLCP, so it's a multi-layer pipe, and it's this pipe here.
I'm going to do some connections with that, show you how to connect it, show you the fittings, and yeah, just generally have a run through it, really.
One thing I will say, if you're a plumber, and you're shaking your head, and thinking oh no, I don't like this stuff. Well, many years ago, probably about eight, or nine years ago, I went to a job, and it had this stuff installed. I didn't know what it were, to be honest.
As the years have gone by, more, and more systems now, are done with this pipe, so it's something that you need to really, really get your head round.
Pex piping, the MLCP pex piping is the way forward really, because a lot of time now, hot works is not allowed. In new building, in commercial settings, underfloor heating as well, is normally MLCP pex pipe as well, so it's something that you need to know about. At very least, you need to be aware of it, and how you can use it, and connect onto it if you need to.
I've got various fittings here, so we'll have a little run through these now, and then I'll show you the press gun. I'll also show you the copper press gun as well. Obviously, most of my jobs now, I don't do soldering anymore. I don't want to put any muck, flux, solder et cetera in the pipes, so I use press fit. I'll show you that as well, but I'll show you that at the end of the video.
This is more to do with the pex piping, This system that I've got here is, the pex pipe, which is ... I don't know if I've got a little bit of a ... That's, if you can see ... I don't know if it'll show you it right way round, or not, but it's pex pipe, and you can buy this from James Hargreaves. I know that you can get it from there, so that's where I've got some of this stuff from.
Yeah, let's have a look at the fittings now. If we have a look at the fittings, that's how you would get the fitting, and it had a stainless steel cover on there, so that's your stainless steel cover that goes over top there. On the inside of it, it would look like that.
These fittings the Russ approved, the pipe, the pex piping is also Russ approved. You can use this on secondary hot water systems as well. Obviously, you're not able to do that with normal plastic pipe. That's what the pipe looks like.
I'll just show you the rest of the fittings are first. You do have the fittings that you crimp on, and obviously you have Ts, and reducing Ts, and normal reducers, and elbows, et cetera, sockets, as you do with all different types of plumbing systems.
There's also one of these, it's like a compression fitting, and these are like a kit. If you haven't got a press gun, and you've got a leak, you can use there, so you can obviously ... You can push it in. That comes out of there. You push your pipe into that, clean your pipe up, push your pipe into there, and then you connect that in there, and then that'll tighten in as normal with an
Let's just have a quick look at the pipe now. This pipe here, I've actually really gone to this ... I've cut it up, and got it. You've got your pipe, and then you've got an aluminium layer in this pipe. I don't know if you can see it, and then you've got your pipe again, so this is a five layer pipe, so it's really strong.
I'll just show you some of the pipe now. I'll show you how you can bend it, and stuff. You can buy this pipes in rolls, or in lengths. You can buy it in 2.5 metre lengths if you wanted to. You can also buy it in rolls, 50 metres, and 100 metres, I believe.
This pipe is 16mm, you can also get it in 20mm, 25mm, and 32mm. If you want to bend it, you can just bend it, and you just bend it to whatever you want. It just stays where you want. You're probably not going to need that many bends, or that many fittings really, and obviously you can just put it on wherever you want, straighten the pipe up however you want as well.
What I'll do now is, we'll do some crimping onto it, so we'll press some fittings onto this. To put a fitting, or to instal a fitting onto this pipe, first of all, we need a clean edge. We would want to cut that with some pipe cutters. I've got some poly pipe cutters. They're just my old ones.
    Pex pipe
You can also buy some ratchet style ones. They may be better. There's lots of brands of cutters. I've no association with any brand at all. The ratchet ones are probably better, as the ... Try, and have a sharp blade, if you can, but as they do wear a little bit, obviously the ratchet ones will still cut through. Pex pipe fittings.
With this, what you want to do, if you've got this type, just cut it, maybe twist it a little bit as you're doing it. Then, what you do is, you just get a nice flat edge.
    .

im in the commercial maintenance game in the city of London and we have been using plastic pipe (i like john guest) for a good time now and we are finding that newer buildings or refits are using this type of pipe and fittings it keeps the danger of fire down greatly ..i love it and think its excellent for DIY work as it requires little real skill (the john guest that is ) or tools a good pair of pipe cutters and dont forget to use the inserts ( we had a lot of plumbers throw the inserts away when they first started using it and we had a LOT of leaks !!!
i think the fact you can get this in large rolls helps domestically because it keeps the number of joints to a minimum and when you have modern floors a leak would be a very difficult thing to get to !! its also quiet AND it prevents scale build up so a great all round product and for those worrying about the eco friendly nature of it , its no MORE unfriendly then digging up[ copper ore and smelting it etc and it lasts for decades ( have some in for twenty plus years in a bathroom at my parents no leaks and no deterioration )
i must confess that a decade ago when we had mcalpines on a site (using a floor as an office for a build down the road ) they tried this crimping system out to install a sink in a first aid room and it PISSED out all over , when i went and had a look and spoke to the site engineer i was convinced it was operator error and offered to check it all out and found the wrong jaws (as fallen explained ) and the guy was not letting the crimper do its full run he was scared of crushing ... i offered to redo it simply because i wanted to use the crimper !! and it worked perfectly it was all copper and is still in use today
i am planning to sue all PEX on my upcoming referb of a house

Hi Allen - Great video I seen this used abroad (Cyprus) when I worked there but they had a slightly different system - they had a "stretcher" that fit inside the pipe and the fittings looked like the one you had stripped down with just the barb & "O" rings - you basically stretched the pipe- removed the tool - then quickly put the fitting in - then the pipe "shrank" back onto it after a few minutes - they were solid once set - you could re-use the fittings by carefully cutting the pipe off and using new "O" rings - the system is quick and cheap so some Cypriot worker was telling me I don't know what the system was called but I have seen it used on some USA video's as well Thanks for all your video's and time putting them on All the best to you mate

Lots of other countries have been using PEX (Australia). The fittings are way stronger than a push fitting. You should not really have an option to take a fitting back off. The plumbing standards need to be raised in England. It would cut out a lot of the cheap cowboys.

    @dariusz078 5 років тому +2

I do not think those fittings are "quality". They will be restricting a lot of flow as they are smaller diameter than the pipe. With coper fitting your flow area is actually increased at the fitting as they go over the pipe not inside the pipe.
The whole point of using pex pipe is to make it a lot cheaper however those pex fitting are 10x more expensive than copper so do not use fittings to connect 2 pipes. The only place where I use them is at the tap where the pipe ends, and at the source where it starts. That is it. Never Ever use 90deg fitting. Never use fitting to join 2 pipes. Just bend the pipe 90deg. Never use those fitting as tee but better run separate pipe from the source. To do the above you must use pipe from the roll of 50m or more.

Thanks, you have educated me - that is hard to do in this business. I have always used solder, and the odd compression, for gas, not really looking if newer fitting were available, as solder and compression worked and cheap enough. If you already have the crimping tool, then it makes sense to use pressfit on gas.
I suppose it is a matter of looking at the makers info.
You say they are the same price as a pushfit fittings, which I suppose is about the same price as a _quality_ compression fitting. But end-feed solder is *cheap.*

    • @jmb69er
      @jmb69er 5 років тому +2

Thats the perk but the actual reason it has a aluminium layer its to make the pipe 100% air tight. Plastic is porous as it expands and contracts it takes in air and the aluminium is a barrier to stop the air ingress.
You can bend it by hand but to much and it will kink. The manual bender for it are brilliant
Henco make them but hard to get them in the UK 🇬🇧 so frankische have them made by henco i believe slightly different but not much. Can only get 16mm and 20mm in UK at moment but henco do a 26mm bender to struggling to get hold of the 26mm .
The manual benders bend the pipes to very small radius

Its plastic out layer is only for protection so scratches scuffs to the outer layer do not affect its water/air tight seal as the fittings double O-rings seal on the internal of the pipe which will always be safe from damage.
It had a wide range of fittings and the fittings are slimmer externally no big bulky joints and no loose parts like inserts.

This pipe and its fittings are _expensive._ This pipe has never really caught on, as most prefer the likes of Hep2O pushfit. Its advantage are few when considering the extra costs.

It is better, but it comes down to costs v advantages. If you do lots of big jobs, then I would say go with it. If not, it is a matter of ignoring it. Except when you come across it.

Its main advantage is 100% airtight which wirh regular plastic and copper do not offer and we all know air in the system reduces system life.
