  • Here's a very rare interview with William Katt on Good Morning America from December of 1981. This was during TGAH's 2nd season, and one must wonder what Katt thought when GMA host David Hartman intros him as "Jim Katt". I removed the audio from the flying scenes of the clip, "Believe it or Not" is playing over the shots and this will get a copyright violation if it's heard.

I grew up watching The Greatest American Hero as a young kid in the early 1980s.

Sheesh, the interviewer really put Bill through the gauntlet. Nearly every question had a negative spin. Bill handled it gracefully. The show had some truly timeless and classic episodes. The charisma between the trio was genuine and shined through. Love Greatest American Hero!

For sure the chemistry of the cast is a big part of what makes the series so good. I stayed home from school that morning to record the interview and was so disappointed in David Hartman. Katt was concerned about the way ABC promoted the series, so I'm not surprised that question was asked but overall the whole thing comes across like Hartman wasn't prepared. Thanks for watching!

As a kid, it was all the superhero stuff I was into. Watching again as an adult I appreciate everything else that was going on. I think It was one of those shows that dads could enjoy with their children. Bill was also great in 'House'.

It might've been hard work for him, but hopefully by now, he realizes IT ROCKED! IMO it had all the elements and potential of a 5-10 Season show! Bill Katt is also a Rockin Musician!

It's funny if William Katt looked at this interview now. Because he no longer feels this way about the character or the show. But he was in a different place and time then!

I’m sure he would wear that suit again NP. But without Robert Culp it just won’t be the same. R.I.P. Robert. Great tv series back in the 80s. 😎👍🏻

This is a great find, thank you. I think Bill handled the interview very well considering David Hartmans condescending attitude. Didn’t realize he could be such a jerk.

What a depressing interview! Katt doesn't seem overly enthused to say the least. The interviewer is so serious and melancholy. You would think he was interviewing Katt about one of his parents dying. How odd this is, not what I would have expected at all. This couldn't have helped the show.

I've read a couple of Katt interviews that were not long before TGAH, and he said many times he was misquoted or an interview didn't go very well for one reason or another and he was always reluctant to agree to do one. Seems that luck continued with GMA and Hartman introducing him as Jim Katt. On the other side of the coin, I've heard Katt now say he was a bit too serious back then and in some cases needed to lighten up. Maybe a combo of both in this case.

@@differencemaker242 I have a print ad for a morning show called AM Los Angeles on KABC from March or April of 1982. Katt was a guest, and I would love to know if that went any better than the GMA appearance.

The song is what made it popular. I can understand why they are trying to hold onto it through copyrights..
However, Bill Maxwell stole the show In my opinion 😄

When watching this back in 81 I was so surprised to hear Hartman call him "Jim" as the interview started. Katt had stated back then he hated giving print interviews because he was always misquoted, I can only imagine what he thought when a non print interview with the network he was on started out like that. I only know of two televised interviews Katt gave back during the series run. This one from GMA and one he did on KABC TV's AM Los Angeles. Sadly I did not live on the West Coast so I do not have the AM Los Angeles piece.

I think he was sort of burned out with the whole being a lead in a tv series from that era thing, (interviews hectic schedules etc) which is why he turned down an additional two seasons when it started hitting big in syndication during the mid eighties. In retrospect now I've heard him say in interview that he wished he would've taken it, I'm glad he's enjoying the conventions and talking about TGAH now, seems like a nice man. @@tgaharchives1981

Try putting in 12 to 14 hour work days 6 days a week...that is what he did. But, you know, to you he seems lazy or something? He has been in the acting business for 60 years or MORE. Don't come to a video and put down the person that the video is about...go somewhere else. It's rude and ignorant.
