ugh, finally! a video on youtube that properly explains it so it makes sense, thank you so much!
Great video! My boys pout when they're put on bedding! Fleece is just so much cozier, affordable and easier to care for overall! Great example of the wicking too! :)
I see you have two male piggies. I also have 2 males, not neutered. Is your cage smell free? My cage starts smelling only after 1 day after changing the fleece bedding (poop cleaning 3 times per day, pads changed daily, complete fleece change 2 times per week.
Kayla Ross: You wash fleece on a regular wash cycle. You can add a cup of vinegar to a wash load. You wash the fleece on a regular wash cycle to clean it and to prep it to wick.
So Anti Pill fleece is safe? Or not
John Blobe Anti pill, blizzard fleece are safe, the most common two.
skinnypigs1 Is U-Haul furniture Pad the stuff you are talking about? I was on a website and it said that this was the stuff, but I don't quite trust it. I want the best for my piggies and other piggies, and the best way to find out if it is safe is to consult the expert of pigs, YOU!
By the way I absolutly LOVE yor videos and you are accualy the person who got me interested in Guinea Pigs. I am getting my piggie from the shelter soon, that is the best place to go AND I am using a c and c cage because when i see piggies in pet store cages it makes me SOOO upset and feel aweful!
***** Thanks!
I think this video is one of the best I've seen informing people about fleece and showing what exactly is meant by wicking! Thanks for this! ❤️
YOU ARE A MIRACAL WORKER
Thank you! I have just switched my guinea pigs to fleece so this is all new to me! :)
Ok thank you! Sorry about butterscotchripple, she was a good piggy. I love your videos. You've taught me how to care for my six guinea pigs when I first got them.
I have three boy guinea pigs and we have been using bedding for about a year since I got them and they're all about one year old. but like you said bedding is expensive so me and my parents are thinking about switching over to fleece this was really helpful thank you!
Love ur ideas. I made a couple of the fleece lines. My piggies love them. Thank u for sharing
thank you!!! u r my favorite you tuber!!! I love all of your videos!!!
You are the best UA-camr when it comes.to guinea pigs. I only trust your information....
Ome UA-camr said that they dont need hay and you can give them pellets 24/7... and they had a wheel in the cage and gave them yogurt drops which are bad right? And the cage was a small littke petstore bought one and they recommended it...I said
"That cage is kind of too small for two pigs. I would reconsider and make a C&C for under $50"
And they said the petstore recommended that cage!
Great video my piggies live in a 2 by 4 (2 females) and attached to it is another homeade wood cage. I use fleece because of this vid!
Thx
So helpful! Thank you for testing the fleece with the water!
Great informative video! I use bedding when we go away and I hate the stuff! As well as expensive to buy, there is also so much of it to get rid of afterwards!
Great video.... as usual! A couple observations though.... blizzard fleece = polar fleece. And anti-pill fleece is actually what is recommended for cage liners.. it's much higher quality and lasts longer. ☺ Thanks again for all of your great videos!!
Thanks so much for the tips! I had a basic idea on how to do this but you went into more detail! I will definitely use fleece when I get my Piggys :)
This is really cool. I wonder if I can use my old cloth diaper microfiber inserts, in the fleece, as the absorbent layer?
yes you can i have done so so so much research for my guineas and yes the cloth works
ooooh good example of wicking ;)
The Cavy House Thank you! I thought that would be helpful, don't know if people are aware of what it really looks like when fleece isn't ready :)
Great information...I am having my daughter watch this :) Thank You!
YAAAAY im so happy I live right next to a laundry and I have a bunch of extra towels.
I know this may sound stupid lol but How exactly do you make fleece bedding/ liner? Do you use an absorbent uhaul blanket, fleece blanket and sew them together? Any input would be helpful thanks!
They are made like cloth baby diapers are made. Top layer fleece, absorbent insert (terry cloth towel, cotton baby diaper, bamboo diaper liner, denim moving blanket), and bottom layer is a waterproof Gore-tex type fabric. I like to make them by purchasing queen or king size waterproof mattress protectors for the bottom, sewing it to the fleece to make a sack. Then I can insert towels or cotton baby diapers, etc. I find that they wash much more thoroughly when the absorbent layer is NOT part of the blanket.
I love love love your videos thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us❤🐹
Thank you
You have the best videos! Very informative and helpful!
Buddy Bunchkins :) Thank you!!!
Happy to compliment and sincerely so.
Very informative. Thank you!
If you get one of those “British” clothes Airer things you can clip them to a heater and dry them that way it saves on energy
Thank you for the response it really helped
Really good test thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks for making this video! This helped me so much.😃
That's fantastic @skinnypigs1 thankyou so much :)
+arteg1983 You are welcome.
I like how you explained the wicking process but what exactly is wicking? I think I kind of understand the concept of it but I’ve never used fleece before so I’m not entirely sure and I’m about to start using them because I’m in the process of receiving a bigger cage so I definitely don’t have the money to be spending on bedding and I truly believe fleece is better but I’m glad you said this because I honestly didn’t know this had to be done i thought you just had to wash to make it clean before beginning to use it and that’s it but now i know there’s a process and I would love to know more in detail about it if it’s possible... thank you! ♥️
It is when the waxy coating is washed off the fleece and then will allow urine to pass through to the absorbent layer like you want.
skinnypigs1 Thank you so much for taking your time to answer me and for explaining this i really appreciate it and now I understand better 😊
im scared to use fleece. everyone explains it so scary...
I am new to guinea pigs and fleece, but I am anxious to give my sweet Blanche the best environment that I can (yes, I plan to go to a rescue to get a friend for her). My biggest issue with the fleece liners is the "bulkiness" in the washer. My washer (and it's only one year old) goes absolutely bonkers when I put the fleece liner (in a laundry bag) into the load. The bulkiness gets the load completely off balance which causes the washer to go BANG BANG BANG and somehow messes up the spin cycle -- sopping DRIPPING SOAKING wet at the end of the wash cycle. Yes, I am currently drying them with 2 chairs and a fan in my spare bathroom, but it honestly takes DAYS to dry. Any suggestions? Fleece is definitely the best option for me. I HAVE to make this work.
I had to check every pet store in albuquerque to find damn fleece liners. The internet is really expensive for fleece liners! I almost had to pull out the sewing machine. But i finally found two packs at petco. Apparently albuquerque sucks at guinea pigs in general. Every pet store told me that fleece is not only more expensive but "dangerous" probably so they could make more money off pine bedding which they all heavily advocate. Im like what the hell? No! But thanks to your videos ive persisted and now my little piggie has everything he needs except a friend which is coming in a few weeks as soon as i can upgrade my cage.
Great video!!!!!
This is an awesome tutorial, thank you . Do you think this would be a suitable option for washable puppy pads ?
I'm transitioning to fleece and I have a blanket that I think would be good, I will wash it a few times and see if it works. I hope it does because I think it looks very nice.
Make sure you use an absorbent layer underneath.
skinnypigs1 of course
I have washed my new fleece four times and it’s still not wicking. Any advise??
I heard that blizzard and anti pill fleece are safe. I use it and it works fine. It works well if you wick it properly. Also it is pronounced (JOO-ANNS) those are the only fleeces that I can find
Yes, those are safe to use. I just said the first bunch weren't safe (the plush fleeces), then said the most common to use after that, blizzard, winter, anti pill.
ohh ok. I saw the soft fleece today and I walked away. They are good for human blankets. haha
skinnypigs1 I'm getting a baby skinny pig who will be coming home in 6 weeks! and i don't know if i should use fleece while he's that young. He's 2 weeks old right now.
Sophie theunicorn Should never get just one guinea pig, they are social and need a same sexed friend.
ok thank you! we have bought its mum. the breeder said that they should be fine as he is a she.is this true? my friend says its not the same as a friend for her.
what would cause it to not be instantly absorbed besides using softener
thank you for the info
Hello! How do you exactly make fleece bedding for the guineas? I just got fleece, have to wash it but afterwards, I don't understand how to set the fleece in the cage...I don't want my guineas to go under the fleece..Also, I am thinking of getting a jumbo ball so that I could put my guinea in it and then she could just go around, explore and get exercise...do you think that is an ok replacement compared to a playpen?
M Mirza Oh dear, balls are not allowed for guinea pigs or wheels. They do not have flexible backs and that will do serious damage to their backs, so no, they need to run around in a safe area not in a ball.
I buy fleece cage liners, so u-haul (recycled denim) is sewn between two layers of fleece.
Can I use towels as my absorbent layer? I tried uhaul but it didn’t work and I had to throw it out. :(
yes!
hii!! so yesterday, i just bought a bunch of fleece for my piggies from joanns which are anti pill and blizzard, this is ok right?
i'm wondering if i can just use ONE layer of uhaul in the liners because it's hard to get around where i live- is that too little?
also, should i pre wick the fleece before i sew the uhaul in, or should i wick it after...?
one more thing, sorry, i'm planning to make a fleece forest. does this need to be wicked as well?
tysm!! and
it doesn't really matter for the prewicking or not. anti pill is good not so sure about blizzard. uhaul one layer is fine, i have seen people just use one and it works fine. and for the forest not so sure but i dont think so
i read that anti pill is better than blizzard though.
i have 2 9 week old bunnies so i will youse fleece because they keep having accidents but they're going pretty good with litter training
They will get there and once you get them spayed or neutered, they will be awesome at it.
I'll try that thanks
p.s LOVE YOUR VIDEOS I TRUELY APPRECIATE THE INFORMATIVE VIDEOS
Wonderful tips! Can you handwash fleece also? Family wouldn't like me using the wash for fleece.only haha
Probably would be pretty yucky by hand with pee and everything. Not sure how well you could wash it thoroughly.
I do wash it by hand because I'm not allowed to use the washing machine for fleece neither (because of the hairs...) and it works perfectly. Its harder for you, obviously, but the fleece ends clean too.
And thanks Abby for the vid! Love the teddybear fleece
alli_park16 you can absolutely hand wash in fact i recxomend it. I handwash all of my clothes and use a dryer only in the winter. Hand washing is great and clothes come tend to not get ruined as quickly but it will be great for your fleece. Just use non scented soap and a little vinegar. I finally got some fleece for my new guy but when i used to wash for my old piggie he loved to cuddle up and popcorn after a fresh handwashed load! Absolutely no static cling!
skinnypigs1 its actually not that bad. They have these old school rigs that you can still buy that look like oversized cheese graters im sure youve seen them in old fashioned movies. Use some gloves and your fine. But with the amount of fleece and piggies you have i wouldnt reccomend it for you because its just time consuming though i firmly believe hand washing benefits beat the industrial stuff any day
Well if you are going to make your own cage liners what kind of fleece is the best for your pigs and the safest?
I’m using two normal fleece blankets and that’s seems to work for me
What do you mean by normal fleece blankets? With something absorbent underneath?
What can You do if you go on holiday... And have someone to come over and feed them, etc but can't spot clean the cage daily??
Like what could I use instead on those days?
So does this mean that you just replace the bedding/towels underneath and not the fleece on top because the liquid just passes through?
thanks
could one potentially make there own? which fabrics would you use for the absorbent middle layer the u haul blanket?
Is polar fleece safe for Guinea Pigs?
Hi. What do you do with all the mess that your piggies left on the blankets? Is it safe for us to wash blankets soaked with pee (it's kinda gross) in the same washing machine that we do our laundry??
it shouldn't be completely soaked in pee.....
it should be fine because the washing machine is cleaning it, but if it bothers you too bad you can take your guinea pig stuff to a coin laundry or do a quick rinse of the pee with your water hose or shower
+iwonabr I dont think it would be soaked but im sure its fine to do it with your laundry....thats what imma probably gonna do
Probably shouldn't wash it in the same load that has clothes in it just because it's bad to use scented detergent and dryer sheets with with the guinea pig fleece, but using the same washer and washing your pets stuff separate from your clothing should be fine. Just make sure you shake out the poopies first.
Fleece bedding needs to be spot cleaned several times a day (I normally do 3x). Before washing it, you'll need to try and vacuum or brush as much of the poop and hay off as possible. I would also suggest investing in a pet laundry bag as it prevents any fur from getting in the machine. That being said, I still would never ever wash my clothes with the pig laundry.
Can you just use anti pill fleece from the store in a big piece instead of those small pads in the video?
I want to try out fleece for my piggies because Aspen bedding is getting to cost too much, but I don’t have a sewing machine I could use to make those.
Can you make your own, and use those baby crib things that absorb the water/pee?
Hello how often do you change the fleece?
+ValoueSavoie Full cage clean twice a week and change the small pads and beds as needed.
How long do you put fleece in the washer for when u r trying to make it wick and how long when u r just trying to clean it. What wash mode do u put it on when you r trying to make it wick and how much when u r just trying to clean it. How much vinegar do u put in when u r trying to make it wick and do u put vinegar in when u r trying to clean fleece to if u do how much. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
How long do you leave the fleece in the cage before washing
does your uhaul have a plastic layer on the bottom? We don't have the brand 'uhaul' but we do have blankets of recycled fabric strips, which looks a lot like uhaul (there are used when painting walls to absord the paint)
I have a question. My friend has a scentsy in her room and she also keeps her guinea pigs in her room. She shouldn't have her scentsy on when they are in her room right?
PiggieSophia They are highly sensitive to smells, so much better than we are. Strong scents can damage their respiratory systems and cause lung scarring, so yes, they shouldn't be used while the pets are in there. If you can smell it, they can smell it 100 times more (I not sure on the exact difference but it is very great).
Can you use plush for the bottom of the cage? And also, is a fleece throw blanket with a towel underneath okay to use?
Ive been trying to wick my fleece for ages it isnt working ive used all detergent tide and white vinegar the water bill is up the roof
Maybe isn't the right kind of fleece. Is it antipill? Blizzard or polar?
what kind of fleece do u use and where do u get it from????
also does the place where u get it from can they put the uhual the absobant thing and the cage liner??? please help
What type of fleece do you use because I am thinking of getting a guinea pig and I would like to use fleece instead of bedding?
Do you wash the fleece before sewing or after you have made a pad?
Hi! What exactly are you talking about for the "Uhaul" absorbent layer in the liners? Are you talking about the furniture pads they sell there?
Yes, moving blankets.
Where can I buy the fleece you use and recommend? Great video!
Joann's or Hancock Fabrics Online.
Hi Abby, I was wondering, when you talk about UTI's, what are the signs a piggie has one? Just so I know what I should look out for. Thanks.
facebook.com/notes/skinnypigs1-pet-palace/uti-urinary-tract-infection/731796353510127
Hey dj, i wanted to let you know that i can see your messages to other people but i don't know how to fix it. Can you see any of mine? I don't use this very much...d.
With the fleece, if puppy pads go under it must you then clean it out daily or is every week okay ??
I would imagine twice a week would be needed but you'd have to see how well the pee pads hold urine and odor.
Is it okay to use throw blankets for guinea pigs? B & M does some lovely Throws and id love to use them but don’t know if it’s safe.
How often should i change it?
On wash 4 for my fleece and it's still not wicking... I'm following the directions, it's getting really frustrating.
hello how often u changing and the pads don't smell ?
Does anyone know where I could get some of these pre-made and not too expensive?🤔 If you know, that would be great! Thanks😊
When wicking do you need to use anything I washed 3 rounds and no detergent or anything my mom says we don't have to till they use it so how many washes does it take
Can you just use the Vinegar
Is using a polyester blanket okay in a piggies cage?
Camille Galt If it is fleece.
When washing the fleece should i wash the uhual pads too or just leave them in there
Where’d you get the fleece?
Any new videos have links to shops in the description box.
Where can I get the U-Haul pads?
Great info thank you!! Do you rinse out the fleece before you put them in the washer? Does your washer start to smell after awhile?
I don't rinse them first and no, never had a smell.
Thank you!! that's great news!! I'm going to convert!! I really like this idea. :) Thank you for answering me so quickly. :)
Madison Lister: I said in the video the types that are safe.
Is there anywhere else to buy the dustpan and brush for the cage liners? I kind of wanted to get it now rather than wait for shipping. Thank you!
Dollar store, Walmart or any other place like those.
What's your job?? I wanted to know how you have so much time for the Guinea pigs!
@Taylor WOW really???
Would thin fleece blankets work or no?
i have a really thin anti pill fleece
Ok so I'm still washing my fleece. My fleece doesn't do what the first one does anymore, but it also doesn't absorb like the second one either. The water isn't beading anymore, but the water just kind of sits there before it absorbs in.
how many times have you washed it, also sorry that nobody has answered your comment
@@tomasapearson8141 No problem. I got my fleece to work eventually and I've had them for years, haha. Thanks for the response though!
I got some fleece yesterday and have washed and dried it 8x so far (without fabric softener), but the water is still pooling and not passing through, even though I have a towel underneath when I test it out. I've tried using the free 'n' clear Tide and some distilled vinegar, but neither seems to be doing the trick. Not sure what's wrong at this point. Should I try washing the fleece by hand in hot water with Dawn dish soap? Maybe let it soak for a while? Would that dissolve the "barrier"?
+janie sundahl What type of fleece is it?
skinnypigs1 It doesn't specify. Here it is: www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Fleece-Throw/38574080
It's the wrong kind of fleece. Go to a fabric store and get anti pill or blizzard fleece🐹
When you say spot clean do you mean just picking up the poop? When you spot clean do you do that everyday?
Spot clean twice a day. Sweep up poops and any solid hay.
what about the cheap $3.00 fleece at walmart
You can use that, not sure how well it would hold up long term. Just need an absorbent layer under it.
I have two pigs and they are 3 and 4 old and I am building a bigger cage for them. Is it safe to make a second floor to the cage?
***** Guinea pigs are considered seniors by 4 years old, so if was me, I wouldn't make one. Most guinea pigs like senior people can get arthritis.
Thank you for the tip!! I will just make the new cage bigger instead!
Where can I get some fleece cage liners? I want two 2 by 4s. Will they work with rabbits?
Rabbits should be easy to litter train, so liners shouldn't be needed. I have a video on shops I buy from, it is in the link of any of my new videos.
In my cage I use bed sheets with towels under them. Is this okay for them? Or should I take it out?
molly sicurello Bed sheets are not okay, they absorb pee, so the pigs would be standing on wetness. You need fleece if you are doing fabric, with towels underneath, no other fabric can be used. You are going to cause the pigs to have sore, wounded feet, please remove the bed sheets and buy fleece or stick with disposable bedding.
Thank you so much. I'll remove them now.
Quick question on your - how to wash it prep it (fleece) video. What has made the brown owl pad not ready.
What makes it not wick after it has already been washed with vinegar. What has caused the water pooling.
How do you spot clean
It comes non wicked meaning it's ready to be a blanket or something like that so it is water resistant
The fleece is prepped with non-wicking chemicals when it's made in the factory. The owl pad wasn't ready because it wasn't washed enough to remove those chemicals.
I have washed our fleece and dried it approx. 10 times and it's still not absorbing. Are there any other tricks to get it to wick?
cjdray2 What type of fleece is it?
Did you use fabric softner or dryer sheets? (they create a film on fleece and aren't to be used)
Have you tried putting a cup of vinegar in the wash load?
I think I got the anti-pill fleece from Joanne's. I did not use any fabric softener or dryer sheets just used the laundry detergent. I have not tried the vinegar but I will try that next.
cjdray2 I also use an all natural detergent. Some other kinds have so much extra crap in them, wouldn't be surprised if that stays on the fabric and prevents it from working.
Fleece won't absorb urine either, just lets water pass through to the absorbent layer you have underneath :)
Hi...does it smell when you use fleece beddings? More specifiac...can you smell the urine that is being absorbed by the fleece bedding? I am considering switching to fleece also to save money too.
If you let it go too long yes. I change the cages out twice a week and pads out daily if needed and find that is perfect for keeping smells minimal. I also have an air purifier running at all times in their room.
Can you just use vinegar instead of laundry detergent
No, you need laundry detergent.
is zorb safe for piggies as the super absorbent material inside?
+Melissa Pankey Yes! I have liners with that in it from Cobb Cabin Crafts on Etsy. They work very well.
+skinnypigs1 thanks so much:)
