So when I learned how to fly my flight instructors favorite saying was, as he would pull my throttle back "you just lost an engine. What are you going to do?" He would do it during take off, during landing, during level flight, during critical maneuvers. Hell, one day he did it as I passed a Dairy Queen sign. I know. Kind of low but this was his technic. I learned to fly the plane. My reactions became automatic. Pitch for optimum glide angle, pick a landing spot, make the radio call then try a restart.

The first time my instructor did that I jumped out the door screamin' Aaaaaahhhhhh! Seriously, one time over the SE Texas Sam Houston forest my engine quit due to fuel starvation (not exhauston). The only possible landing spot was at my 7-8. I made a right 270 and lined up to pass between two tall trees and set up for a field landing. Here I am coming in for my first read dead-stick landing and I pointed to the far end of the field and said to myself, "Oh look, there's two deer running across the field!!" Priorities, man!! I fixed the fuel problem and flew out easily (ultralight aircraft).
