My favorite movie and soundtrack. Thanks for this. Sam Peckinpaw was great at getting the grit and authenticity out of stories and the actors. Kris Kristofferson and James Coburn are really on top of their game and trade in this one.

I enjoy the movie much more than I like it.....if that makes any sense....haha! I love Kristofferson and Coburn in just about anything they do, and yes I like the grit and authenticity of Peckinpah's approach.

Alot of folks seem to not be aware that it was a SOUNDTRACK album, and so are put off by the instrumental simplicity of it, but I love it. And of course the song "Knocking On Heaven's Door" is a classic.

So the mood where one just wants to tune out from all music does exist. I have this on tape somewhere and see they have a remastered one on iTunes.

Haha, yeah I get that mood sometimes - I assume you do too perhaps? This album is a cure for that rare mood, in my case. Nips it right in the bud.

Actually this may be one of my favorite Dylan albums - in that I tend to play it lot when I can’t decide what else to play. I think that it’s one of his better sounding albums, and one of his better singing albums, vocally. The whole effect is both rough and relaxing at the same time - very accessible. Other than seeing Dylan - and James Coburn and Katy Jurado - I mostly don’t care for the movie. The scene where Slim Pickens dies is very touching, but I find it to be like most of the Sam Peckinpah films I’ve seen, kind of unpleasant and ugly to watch, the opposite of this album..

I agree with everything you wrote here, Thomas. Love the album when I don't want to hear anything else, never much cared for the movie or Peckinpah's style. Yep, I agree.

I would argue this is not really a studio album and shouldn't be evaluated as such. There's basically one real song on it and not a minor one either. But it's not the best version of the song, which would develop much later into the staple song it has become. Otherwise we have a couple of themes and tunes which can't hide there's something missing: the scene. We got to see the movie in school, which usually is not contributing to the experience but I loved the movie. Later when I got more into Dylan, I saw the movie again and enjoyed Dylan's awkward presence. His aura is not at all that of an accomplished star. I cherish the album for the centerfold and the overall atmosphere it brings, as an object and a piece of music. But I leave it out of my "ranking", if that's at all a meaningful effort.

Good points. Not really one of his studio albums per se, I agree. I love this one and it’s one of my most often played of all his albums, because it just makes me feel good. For some reason.

Not a fan of this album or the movie that went with it. I was really excited when I learned about this movie coming out but was a little disappointed when I saw the film and heard the soundtrack. Another film you mentioned based on the Billy the Kid story, One Eyed Jacks, is far superior. Of course, Kristofferson is no Brando either. As you said Knocking on Heaven's Door was a fabulous song, I'm a little surprised it was such a popular hit and was covered though. Being a Western movie fan too, I didn't think the theme would be interpreted more broadly and taken outside the context of a cowboy song. I have forgotten most of the instrumentals but because of your review, I'll have to fire up the old record player or perhaps locate some of these tunes on UA-cam and give them another listen....

I wonder what percentage of people who've ever heard or sung Knocking On Heaven's Door even wonder what "Mama take this badge off of me" even means if they've never seen the movie, haha!

As you say, Jeff, Dylan enjoys writing about Freedom. This first stanza is a powerhouse.
There’s guns across the river aimin’ at ya
Lawman on your trail, he’d like to catch ya
Bounty hunters, too, they’d like to get ya
Billy, they don’t like you to be so free

So true. I remember when it first came out and I noticed it was mostly instrumental guitar strumming, etc., I put it on the shelf for a few years before I eventually listened more to it and realized what a perfectly beautiful album it is. I play it all the time now. Thanks for your comment!

Funnily enough, for Dylan being such a brilliant lyricist, I really love the first track, an instrumental. It evokes a whole western landscape for me. Even though I'm this English guy who's never been to America. A beautiful track. And indeed I love the sounds of the entire album. Okay, it hasn't got the poetic heights of Bringing it all back home, or Blood on the Tracks, but a musically evocative album nonetheless, and very underrated. James Eccles

I don't have the album but I do like it. I need to pick a copy up at some point. Another western themed album I love is Eagles Desperado. One of my favourites by them.

Great band, The Eagles. I have never owned an Eagles album, can you believe that? They were one of those bands whose music so saturated the radio.....sorta like Tom Petty's music did. But what a great band. I should check out their albums.
