That Escape from the City joke you made makes sense, because if you hack the game in Sonic Adventure 2 to play as Eggman without the walker in an Action Stage, he is faster than Sonic in that game. He also has some unused animations and voice clips that plays if you play as him with those hacks on, proving that originally before release, you were supposed to play as him without the walker, then SEGA decided to give him a walker with a gun attached to it (and a melee attack that only works in VS battles and boss battles against other playable characters). Also, in one of the old Sonic games, with a slight delay to Sonic chasing him, he's able to match Sonic in a race to the right side of the screen in the final Act of the game. Maybe even outspeed him. Eggman may be fat, but he's certainly faster than Sonic at Sonic's "safe speed", surprisingly. Eggman just doesn't know it. So he unknowingly handicaps himself with machinery. Sonic never runs at full speed ingame, cause he knows he will destroy what he treasures most if he does so, other living things and nature itself, due to the harsh effects a Sonic Boom causes irl.
