Jaesung Edward Lee I have left on the shores of Lake Ontario in my entire life, but have also lived in various communities on both sides of the border along all of the great lakes. I’ve also been through the Atlantic and Pacific during storm season, and I can tell you without exaggeration that the great lakes are far more vicious than the ocean. I’m not a diver, but several of my friends are, most of them have drove all over the world, but they said they’ve never encountered currents as strong as the ones in the great lakes, especially Lake Michigan, which is the only great lake entirely within the United States, but it gets some absolutely unbelievable huge storms and waves over 50 feet high, That are absolutely relentless, and have sunk many freighters that called great lakes home. My diving friends said great lakes are some of the best wreckage diving on earth, in certain sections, he said you can actually just swim from wreckage to wreckage without ever having to go up to the boat. I’m usually a Land lover, But I have to admit that the water calls to me, but knowing how unpredictable the weather can be on the great lakes, I seldom venture too far from shore. I’ve had a lot of friends lose their boats, and almost their lives, when they went out for a nice day of fishing, with a clear sunny forecast. Then before they know it, they are covered by black clouds and near hurricane force winds, not something you want to face if you’re in the side a tiny 20 foot aluminum boat. It gets tossed around like a toy in the bathtub! Luckily the waters around in Toronto where I live, are generally pretty calm, but that’s just because of geographical favoritism, there’s a small little niche that spares us from the worst of mother nature, but venture anywhere outside that area, and anything can happen. Everyone knows the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald, it sunk within seconds, not even enough time to send out a call for help, that’s but one of the thousands of ships that litter the Great Lakes bottoms. You truly have to respect the water, because it can be a force that’s completely unstoppable, and often extremely deadly, if you don’t pay proper respect to nature. That may sound a bit corny but it’s true. I think I have extra respect for the water because I come from a naval lineage, I am the only man in my family that didn’t serve in the Canadian Royal Navy, but going as far back as my great great grandfather, every member of my family has served, and some of them died, while in the Navy, so it’s in my blood. The only reason I never served was because of my health, I have Crohn’s disease, and one of the most severe cases ever seen, which prevented me from signing up and enlisting in the navy. I hate that I was never allowed to fulfil my destiny, and follow in my family’s footsteps, but I did the next best thing by spending all of my life on the Great Lakes, and as well the ocean, having more family than I can count in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, many of whom are fisherman, I at least got to do that for a while, but I almost lost my life doing it. Remember that movie called the perfect storm? Well it just so happens that I was out in the fishing trawler on the very day that triple whammer hit.... it was a good sized trailer, approximately 150 feet long, with quite a large crew, but when mother nature turns up the oceans and the lakes to a point where they’re boiling with fury, whitecaps over 50 feet high, it didn’t matter if you were in the titanic, we could’ve easily Been sent straight to the bottom by those huge unbelievably fishes waves, not to mention the hurricane Force Gail’s that we had to steam our way through, to get back to shore. Almost every man on that boat with seasoned fisherman, most of them being at least 50 years old and having spent their entire lives on the water, when you see them starting to pray, you know you’re in deep shit! I don’t think I’ve ever been that scared in my life, but we made it back to the safety of Saint johns harbour in Newfoundland, and not by much. We had taken on so much water from those ferocious waves, that it totally overwhelmed the pumps, and by the time we docked, The deck of the ship which usually road at least 20 feet above the water, was now level with the water from the weight of all that extra water flooding the hull! I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to set foot on solid ground! It was still one hell of a storm on the land, but I literally Neil down and kissed the pavement on the dock! A lot of people think I should write a book about my experiences, and I may do just that, life on the water is a life unlike no other, and it’s definitely not for everybody, as well as I said earlier I seldom venture very far away from sure, I have gone a lot further, especially when I was younger, and a lot more naïve. After your first hurricane force scale, you quickly learn to respect the oceans in the lakes, and in my case, it actually scared me from going back out ever again after that perfect storm. It wasn’t do you just that. The coming together of three massive weather systems, was like a nuclear bomb going off! It’s sink ships almost 1000 feet long, but luckily we somehow survived, unfortunately not everyone was as lucky. That day held a very high death toll, and I’ll never forget it as long as I live. Interesting fact I read: If you sprawled all the water from Lake Superior out over the entire United States it would be a foot deep across the entire country. That's 3,000,000,000,000,000 -- or 3 quadrillion gallons. That's 10 million gallons per person in America. Let that sink in.

Beautiful place. That aside, there is a weather phenomena that creates the big waves this time of year. It has to do with the air temperature becoming equal to the water temperature. The great lakes can produce massive waves but not nearly as large as the ocean. It's not the size that makes them so dangerous it's the frequency, large waves on the lakes are closer together and the short distance between the crest and trough that makes them so mean.
Actually no, waves in ocean storms are just as close together as waves in the lakes. It's not until the wind stops blowing and the waves calm down that ocean waves become more peaceful and farther apart. The physics are almost exactly the same for ocean waves and lake waves.
@@theotherbumblebug3880 not exactly. Go ride in both. Sailors claim the lakes ride like a washing machine. There is a big difference....e.xperience is the best teacher
This could be because of the fact that almost every swell in the Great Lakes never becomes a fully formed wave (wherein the waves reach the maximum possible size for the speed of the wind). In the oceans, the waves often have more than enough time to reach their full size for the wind speed. It might be that as the waves reach full size, they become longer period and farther apart. But other than this, I do believe the physics are pretty much the same for lake and ocean.
@@theotherbumblebug3880 replying to the other guy too. A big difference is also the salinity. The lake is much "heavier" feeling, adding to the strength. Freaky sailing during a gale
By the way, all of the Great Lakes produce waves this big; the other lakes just don't have big cliffs for the waves to crash into like on Lake Superior.
Yes. They all produce large waves, but the highest wave ever recorded on Lake Eerie was 19' and the other lakes just don't have the volume or type of topography to generate waves like Superior does. I've been to every great lake during almost every season and none of them compare to Superior. Records: Lake Superior: 29' Lake Michigan: 23' Lake Huron: 24' Lake Eerie: 19' Lake Ontario: 25'
Yes and no. They're breaking way over 50' cliffs, but waves are actually measured from "trough" to "crest" and the highest ever recorded on Superior was 29'. Although, many believe the wave that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald was over 30'.
A week or so before this i was solo camping at 12 mile beach campground.....Picture Rocks National Shoreline....definitely got by gail force winds then too!!
I snorkel in on the north shore. First time you jump in your lungs don't work lol...but it's amazing because it's bahamas clear and the boulders are HUGE

@@rhondaserges5136 Um MN has a portion of the North Shore of Superior. It's literally called the North Shore. No one said it's the only northern shore.
I don't know how tall those cliffs are, but judging from the height of the trees, they would seem to be pretty darn tall. Lake Superior amazes me. It's almost like it were alive. It can be in a good mood, calm, beautiful, serene and blue. Or it can throw a massive tantrum like we see in this video - or even worse. Frankly, I'm kind of surprised that there are trees there at all given the force of the waves. One might think that it would simply erode away the soil and wash the trees right into the lake.
I live near it, and always regretted that it wasn't a sea. Until I saw the ocean and realized that Lake Superior was indeed a sea--but better-smelling.
@@southtonorth-original I suppose I am. It is an hour's drive away, though, and I don't get to the shore often. The water is always clean and frigid; very nice for a splash on a hot summer's day.

True November through February is when experienced surfers go to Hawaii. HUGE waves. Wish I was there.
Freaky sailing during a gale
was out there in a canoe that day---piece of cake--going fishing next week north sea in a pontoon boat
Lindíssimo vídeo! Parabéns 👏👏👏
Records:
Lake Superior: 29'
Lake Michigan: 23'
Lake Huron: 24'
Lake Eerie: 19'
Lake Ontario: 25'
Those are 80 feet waves
Yes and no. They're breaking way over 50' cliffs, but waves are actually measured from "trough" to "crest" and the highest ever recorded on Superior was 29'. Although, many believe the wave that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald was over 30'.
Watch this video with no sound while listening to Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Thats where they shot the cliff scene in 'the good son'
Evan Fritts home alone meets psycho.
Palisade head!! I learned to repel off that thing!
Violent yet beautiful
So true!
Great videography! Thanks for sharing. Just a reminder though, never, ever turn your back on the ocean or the Great Lakes!
Hmm I can see how the SS Bannockburn just "disappeared" now. I live on Lake Michigan and had no idea Superior had such massive waves.
A week or so before this i was solo camping at 12 mile beach campground.....Picture Rocks National Shoreline....definitely got by gail force winds then too!!
Incredible. No need for music though. The lake is the music.
Amazing power, hard to fathom that its a lake
Do you know how fast the winds where blowing? Nice video!
Seen this many times...it never gets old!! TO ALL YOU NAYSAYERS, REMEMBER...GEEZ, IT IS ONLY A LAKE!!
Whatbis this a 1980s training video with this music

The Lakes are some beautiful country !
Jeez. Those are trees! And the waves dwarf them.
I never knew this happened up there. So crazy
The waves were ok, but the music was AMAZING!
And the water is ice cold all year. Got hit by a wave once
Lake Superior is no joke!
That’s for sure!
yo, what happened to a crystal clear water then? 🤔
The cliffs erode in storm. Lake Superior is very clear in normal weather.
How big are the waves?
I imagine they were hitting 30 feet up on the cliff.
Beautiful.
The moody big sis of the Great Lakes
Amazing power.
It truly is Willy!...Hard to believe that this is a "lake"
🌊🏄♀️ Surf's up! Let's go! 🤙🏾😎
Dude winter surfing at cove Shebo
ygan wisc lake Michigan. Barrels but you need boots. Hood, thick drysuit. It's cold.
Shaka
In Costa Rica I told a life gaurd I was from Minnesota. He said he was just surfing there.
WTH with the music dude?

I have to get a wet suit and go for a fun swim there next time a storm likes this pops up
I snorkel in on the north shore. First time you jump in your lungs don't work lol...but it's amazing because it's bahamas clear and the boulders are HUGE
Brave!
“The lake she is said, never gives up her dead, when the gales of November come early….”
The lake that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald
Mike Avery and like 900 other boats and ships
The Edmund sank in Lake Michigan not Superior
@@AnnaMorris411 The Edmund Fitzgerald sunk in Superior
@@AnnaMorris411 the Carl D. Bradley sank in Lake Michigan
How big is the cliff , how tall are the trees?
The cliff is around 50-60 ft I believe. It’s definitely up above the surface of the water
I believe these cliffs are up to 80' high.
I guess the gales of November came early
Those trees are like: woooooooooo!
I would love to find a print of the photos,, if you can help me let me know..please.
those haveto be the power of the great lakes .
Why would you put music to this video ? 🙁🙁
No natural sounds as wind far too strong for audio
Largest fresh water body in the world. Add hurricane wind - 50 foot waves. You are advised to stay on high ground.
Music is unnecessary and intrusive - I'm gone. There are others who captured the same storm, same spot, authentic sounds.

@@SparkyStensaas Nope, for many of us the sounds of the waves and the wind are an integral part of the experience, whether in person or via video. Best wishes to you and to your viewers who enjoy this style.
as was sung by the great Stan Rogers "... and I have told that man a 100 times, don't take the lakes for granted, they go from nought to a 100 miles so fast they seem enchanted"
Great lyrics! … and so true for Lake Superior
She’s magnificent
She sure is!!
Impressive waves. Thank you. Where exactly on the North Shore is this?
Minnesota .. So not a north shore .. North shore is Canadian. South Shore is U.S.
@@rhondaserges5136 Um MN has a portion of the North Shore of Superior. It's literally called the North Shore. No one said it's the only northern shore.
IF I'M NOT MISTAKING...THOSE CLIFFS THERE ARE APPROX. 120' HIGH
And I love my home land😬
What track is this?
This lake must be dangerous anytime of the year.
itis
It is bone achingly cold when swimming, even when in summer calm. Cooling off after a long day hiking was a mistake.
A Lake Superior Tree and Cliff wash
It wasn’t exhilarating day!
Can y'all just make a vid WITHOUT the damn music please. It's distracting
How tall are those cliffs?
I don't know how tall those cliffs are, but judging from the height of the trees, they would seem to be pretty darn tall. Lake Superior amazes me. It's almost like it were alive. It can be in a good mood, calm, beautiful, serene and blue. Or it can throw a massive tantrum like we see in this video - or even worse. Frankly, I'm kind of surprised that there are trees there at all given the force of the waves. One might think that it would simply erode away the soil and wash the trees right into the lake.
@first name 15 meters I guess
Can't believe that this is a lake...!
I live near it, and always regretted that it wasn't a sea. Until I saw the ocean and realized that Lake Superior was indeed a sea--but better-smelling.
@@bnic9471 you are lucky to live there...
@@southtonorth-original I suppose I am. It is an hour's drive away, though, and I don't get to the shore often. The water is always clean and frigid; very nice for a splash on a hot summer's day.
@@bnic9471 😍😍😍
This gorgeous footage and sound of the waves is inexplicably _ruined_ by the crap “music” inserted by the videographer! What were you _thinking?!?_ I would bet a lot of money that nobody who watched this footage would think that the awful “music” enhanced the sound and fury of Lake Superior. Horrible!!
Not quite as big as the ones at Nazare but pretty freaking special nonetheless
Surfers with very big nads surf Nazare
Close to Mavericks.
The ones at Nazare seem to swell and break so far out there. These Superior waves seem a bit smaller and more chaotic, somehow.
🇨🇦💎🇨🇦💎🇨🇦 The big white teeth of Lake suchus, I’m telling you God doing all he can 🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊
Out in the middle of the lake the waves are small and Peewee, only when they crash into the cliff do they look menacing..
The waves in the middle are bigger than you think
This couldn't be more untrue. There are several videos of waves breaking over the top of freighters. I have lived in Mich. my entire life and know you are not telling the truth.
Complete bullshit, let's see a video of you sailing the middle of the lake during a November storm and you can show us all how "small" the waves are
Why music!!
Thanks for watching!
