    Hi! I've been working with a Cintel II Scanner for the past years and have done hundereds of documentaries, shorts, newsreel, trailers and almost two handfull of feature films. If you want any advice on how to get the most out of it or have discovered something yourself then feel free to get in touch with me. Please use proper gloves though. ;)
    One thing I noticed when working with color film is that you get quite noticeable noise levels in chroma due to the bayerfilter. This is especially noticeable in whites when scanning negatives. Setting chroma NR to 20-25 in the DaVinci Color Tab (before applying any grade) pretty much eliminates that while still keeping all of the grain intact.

    • @MidwestFilmCo
      @MidwestFilmCo  5 років тому +2

      Hey! There are people out there using the Cintel!!! Thanks so much for reaching out. I have noticed the same when it comes to noise. A little birdie told me that the 6K camera is coming - and there is an upgrade. I'm assuming it's the Pocket 6K sensor, which I shot with the other day... that will pretty well eliminate all noise in the highlights. If they let us take advantage of the 3200ISO there could be some amazing scans of super dense film as well... I'm really enjoying the scanner! Again. Thanks for reaching out. I have to agree with a number of the comments here: For years Blackmagic Design left a lot to be desired with their Cintel unit and there are a number of red flags in regards to that. First the lack of technical information (they finally provided a link for a manual just last year) on the Cintel product. Second the lack of customer service and response to customer inquiries. Blackmagic acquired Cintel around 2014 and pretty much treated the product line like it's red headed stepchild for far too long. It may have improved by now, I don't know, but whenever I see a company pay little attention to it's paying customers in regards to a particular product, I walk away and don't look back. You hear that Lucasfilm???

    • @MidwestFilmCo
      @MidwestFilmCo  3 роки тому

      Ha. It hasn't been great as far as customer service but they eventually get back to you. In a market of multi $100,000 scanners this scanner is really great. I mean - I'd love to drop a couple hundred K on a scanner but it doesn't make sense for lower volume. As my volume has picked up I've really been looking into adding a scanner that will handle 8mm. It's just around the corner! Also - Apple makes all their money on phones so the customer service department for their $30,000 Mac Pro's is a couple people in the basement. You could say the same for the Pocket 6K.

    Hi, great video! In the user manual BM stresses out that this is not a telecine machine, but rather a scanner. On another hand, they claim it is full-speed 24-fps scanner, so from a user's point of view effectively a telecine? I saw a comment below from another owner who said that the frame rate drops on his machine, supposedly because of slow HDD/SSD. I guess, if it were a true telecine, the frame rate would not drop? By reading the user manual it is not clear whether it saves each frame in an individual file, or whether it creates a video in proprietary format.
    Reading the manual, it seems that sound is not being recorded live, but rather is stored as part of the frame, and then you need to extract sound from the clips, and at this point it would convert optical track into sound. So, at this point, the whole reel is already merged in a single video clip, or each frames are still sit around individually?

    • @MidwestFilmCo
      @MidwestFilmCo  Рік тому +1

      The Cintel is a frame x frame scanner - it just captures each frame in "real-time" or faster. You can run the machine up to 30fps. It creates individual frame files in the .cri (cintel raw) format. I don't have the audio reader so can't speak to that. I use a piece of software to convert the audio file to a wav in post when I'm doing archival with sound. Hope that helps.

      Hey! Awesome to hear you're also scanning 35mm. I've seen a big uptick in 35mm scanning myself. The reason for the drop in frames is the write speed of your drive. I have big dumb drives for storage and they're slow. I have a 2TB solid state drive for scanning 35mm, otherwise the scan time is greatly increased. Go get a ScanDisk SSD. If it read/writes at least 450MB/s you're good.

    Awesome! Looks like Super 16. Seems to be a little unstable but perfectly stabilized. This confirms my being reluctant to Ultra 16 conversions for cameras that don't have a rock steady image since we are stuck between sprocket holes. Super 16 has enough headroom/leeway when cropped to 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 to allow for stabilization and even a little vertical reframing. Just my usual ramblings. Thank you so much for keeping film alive! Have a great Christmas and a happy, healthy and successful 2021!

    • @MidwestFilmCo

      16 can be every bit as stable as 35 really. When you're running a high end, well tuned camera like the SR2 it will be rock solid! If you're shooting with a K3 or a Bolex that hasn't been to the doc for a while you can get some bad bounce for sure!

Lots of professional russian gear used for sale, but camera repair/refurbishing/ conversions costs a fortune and these cameras almost always come without lenses and these are hard to find.

I've never shot with one but I'm totally gonna buy one! As soon as I start running film on the scanner I immediately pick up the K3 frame - it's a bit bouncy and will even have a shutter lag effect between frames. If you have a stable one, that awesome! As far as Ultra16 goes, I haven't found a use for it... with scanners scanning at higher and higher resolutions it's hard to justify the massive cost of that conversion. Just my two cents!

      This is a kind of a loaded question... are you wanting to purchase a scanner or have some film scanned?
      As an owner, it doesn't get any easier than the Cintel. You plug the scanner into your existing computer, download the free version of Davinci Resolve, and start scanning 16mm & 35mm film at real-time speeds. If you're talking resolution then the Goldeneye (3 & 4) have the Cintel beat at 16mm and also offers an 8mm solution. I've actually compared the two images side by side - 16mm Cintel vs. GoldenEye III (I'll release that) and I fail to see a noticeable difference.
      Also, the GoldenEye is $100,000+ and the Cintel is $29,995. I'm happy to answer any questions I may have the answer to! Send me some film, compare for yourself!

      We’ve been doing a lot of it. You have to merge 2 images together, that’s the downside. We’re processing ECN2 Vision 3 film and scanning it on this scanner. Looks rad!

      @@MidwestFilmCo that's pretty cool! Do you stitch together multiple rolls into a large one for this to work? By the way it's also interesting to know, how Cintel would know where is the frame and not end up scanning in-between frames!

      @@Stanlyok Yes, as we're in the testing phase of the process we don't have a ton of rolls at a time but the plan is to process client film in batches, hang to dry, then splice them all together, scan each roll independently, and then stitch them in post for delivery. Silbersalz35 has been doing a really great job of this in Germany. Check them out.

      @@MidwestFilmCo thanks for the tip, saw their studio tour and might get a pack from them eventually, since we're also in Europe! But I would also love to watch a video about the process, especially since even now there are very few videos about Cintel. Did you get your camera cover???

      @@Stanlyok Ha. Never got a cover - it's not a part they sell. My buddy will 3D print one if I give him a reason to :) Prolly should. We're in the middle of working on a video for the process. I'm being very careful how I put this out there. I may be being optimistic but I have a feeling a bunch of people are going to want to start sending their film in and we aren't set up for 30 rolls a day! The last test I did was with the Cinestill ECN it and it was totally fine. I'm working with QWD Lab here in the states for chems now. The results are really great! Keep your eyes out for a video on the process soon ish!
