I feel like SSP's need too much information for the buyer. Everyone knows was a gold refractor is. But a card being an SSP because the player is touching his head? IDK, doesnt do it for me. Now anyone willing to spend 4k on a card probably knows what SSPs are, but I imagine numbered cards have a much bigger audience. SSP's if the image isn't super cool don't do much for me.
Chris here - that’s fair. The image isn’t especially exciting. But it sure is rare. Like you, I’d like to think that anybody looking or willing to spend $5k+ on a baseball card is doing their homework, but you’re right that a gold refractor is more universal.

At that price point all one needs is 2 or 3 knowledgeable buyers for a price increase. That's the point.
@@stueystuey1962 True, but you also need those people looking for it. Think about how few people actually know its even out there, compared to a gold refractor, everyone knows.
Worst pause I ever had in the hobby was not buying Ohtani when he had his 1st TJ when his cards were dirt cheap and my buddy was picking up his stuff for Pennies on the dollar. Now I just pick up some of his cheaper stuff

Great episode. Keep em coming. Scott, feels to me like there is no connection there for you to own an Ohtani. Can't force it or you want enjoy owning the card and as you stated, you'll end up moving off of it.
Chris here - Poor Scott is a Rockies fan, so he doesn’t have any connection to current great players. Or really, even good ones.
His Betts fandom makes him a Dodgers fan and I think every dodgers fan will want a piece of Ohtani history before his 10 years are up.

Not at the expense ofselling the Goldie. No way. Keep Goldie Red. Special Ohtanis will always be available. BowChro /5 not so much.
@23:55 Something to consider is that his autos in Bowman Chrome are (expired) redemptions. So really the population of BCRASO's is pretty much going to remain the same forever.

There are a total of only 6 RED INK 2018 Topps Heritage PSA 10's of Ohtani graded and that's both series 1 and 2 together~with and without the hat... 69+69 is it? Interesting how tough that card is to gem.... I think some of the SSP's are as populated as any of his other options.... so SSP's I take with a grain of salt....great topic !
Chris here - Those high number red inks - better image IMO - are notoriously off center. Why topps, why??
Red Inks and heritage autos in general are pretty tough to gem. Paper cards, handled by a lot of people.
Ohtani SSP - definitely more updates printed than the series 2.

I really love the content that your team puts out. I think you all may be underestimating the broader global stardom that Ohtani has and (in my opinion) will continue to have when discussing his market and whether its "too hot." He's a generational talent and he's not American. We've seen that before with Latin American players in the sport's past, but we've never seen that with an Asian player. Ichiro is the closest thing and he was never the best player in baseball during his playing days. His cards have held up very well in price and Ohtani is on a different level in terms of production. Because of this wide-spread and international appeal, I would argue that his market isn't "too hot."

Buy the best Ohtani you can afford that has a low print run/serial numbered because in the long run, the big Ohtani collectors will have everything else and a bidding war will rage over it. I would then narrow it down rookie cards. I like the dual auto of Ohtani and Acuna as well as the Ichiro and Ohtani gold refractor. One of you made a good point about Ohtani is like Brady, discounted because he had a flaw and now it looks like he could be one of the most talked about baseball players since Babe Ruth.
I bought a mega blaster of topps update '18 and pulled 4 versions of ohtani. I felt like that was pretty good. Pulled Soto rainbow foil as well

2018 Shohei Ohtani Gold US700 PSA 10 for 2K + A second/third year auto before he started romanizing his auto. Two 2019 Transcendent autos (BGS 9 10 auto and BGS 9.5 9 auto) just sold for $1700 and $1900 so those would've been good pickups.

To Phil at 23 mins in I agree but I'd say most cards being sold were bought lower and now the people know they can easily double their money. You can always reinvest your gains back in to Ohtani with a better card worth more.
This isn’t true! Sell Ohtani to buy Ohtani and work your way up the ladder.
Chris was pressured into buying trout cards so im curious if he is still ahead on the card/cards. to me its a good decider on ohtani cards. we tend to value cards as if nothing will change during a players career but trout proves that model to be potentially flawed.

Great question! I ended up buying a Finest xfractor rookie bgs 9.5. Got a decent price but I’m sure it’s a little down now considering yet another injury.
I also was able to track down his 2013-14 topps chrome SSP’s, which I’m absolutely pumped to have.
You’re dead on that expecting human beings to continue performing exactly the same way is very flawed way of thinking.
Could I buy the same trout rookie today for less money? Probably.
The Chrome SSP’s - I doubt I’ll ever have the chance.

I still can’t figure out why the finest mystery redemption auto /99 RC only sells for around 3500 in a psa 9. It’s one of his most beautiful auto rcs, it was a redemption, it’s an on card auto, and it’s /99. That’s one of his best and most underrated cards in my opinion.
Chris here - everything you said is correct, but this still Finest. Same with Bowman’s Best. Just not as popular or big name product. It’ll never keep pace with topps chrome and bowman chrome but does provide nice looking cards at more reasonable prices.
The Acuna finest redemption auto rookie is a beauty as well!

I like xfractor cards and the Ohtani no update xfractor cards are only numbered to 50. The PSA 10 pop count is around 17.
*Edit* I’ve been corrected they are of /99.
Chris here - I love a good xfractor myself. Design really pops.
I like that the updates are numbered (#/99 though, not 50) and I prefer the non auto to the ones with sticker autos.

@@SpitballinCards ah yes, that’s correct /99. I actually own both in a PSA 10. Those were the first “big” cards I purchased of him a few years ago. I do prefer the hitting version but I love them both.
One of my favorite cards of his is the 2018 Panini Flawless with the logo patch. The patch is perfect and the card is beautiful. I know unlicensed cards don’t carry the same value, but just based on looks, it’s my favorite.
Philmington at 22:45 bringing the real talk. This is the issue (with basically all ultra modern singles market moves) always at play. Which is why I tip my cap to all you silly fools playing the game and wish you fiends god speed as I collect my 90s Jordan inserts and random low numbered cool 2000's dead era stuff of players/teams I like on the cheap.
The modern/ultra modern hobby is definitely risky. No doubt about it.
I think Ohtani’s Update pitching ssp and his stadium club pitching ssp are the best bang for your buck. I didn’t own any Ohtani and went with those. I could be mistaken though

Are some of these cards you are considering still available in unopened packs or have they all been pulled? Crazy question, but what do you think? If I told you have 3 boxes of 2018, would you tell me to rip them in search of one of his autos? Do I tip the 2018 case of Heritage I have in search of???
If that stuff is still unopened now, then I’d recommend leaving it unopened. Sealed 2018 boxes can be a great investment.

What is the population of the 2013 Japan BBM rookie cards ?

Personally, I’d never spend $5K on ANY sportscard. I’ve never spent more than $2500 on any single card.
shittttt... even 2500 is too much. lol... ill never pay over 300... i trade for the high end cards.
full disclosure, I spent $2300 on my 1923 W515 Babe Ruth.. for me, it’s difficult to justify dropping that kind of money on a modern card.

I know the chrome update you mean, it’s the rookie debut card. While the image is great, it’s still just a rookie debut card. It will slays lag behind the base chrome rookie and probably the update base card rookie as well.
It’s truly a shame topps didn’t use that batting image on the update base card.

Just too many options I have no idea what to buy. If you had to buy, buy one that you find attractive and limited supply, just wait until an injury or the offseason
He does have a lot of options.

I have to be missing something. Ohtani is 29 with 37 WAR, 737 hits, 182 hrs, and a .279 career average. He pitches and dh’s which are two of the least valuable positions to collect. I get it, he hits and pitches but is everyone expecting him to be some starting ace that hits 40 hrs at 38 years old? Idk I just don’t see it. What specific statistic do you see holding this value long term?
My personal opinion is that by the time Ohtani retires, he will be considered as the greatest player in the history of baseball. That's what will keep his values up long term.
@@user-jg9lq9kn2w I do get where you are coming from but I don’t think there has ever been a “greatest of all time” player that didn’t have at least one exceptional career stat. I just think if ohtani where to miss a full season from now till retirement, he’s going to have a real tough time hitting any of those stats especially if he stops pitching which is likely after like 35. You also have to realize that he’s only been putting up crazy numbers for like 3 years. His first two seasons weren’t that great so there is a chance he could turn out out like yelich or bellinger. No one in 2019 would have predicted them to burn out and you would have been called crazy for predicting it
@@tedjerdee1028 While Ohtani may not have something like a 60 HR season or a Cy Young season (yet), I think the way it needs to be looked as is just how good he is at doing both. He's not just "okay" at hitting and pitching, he is EXCEPTIONAL at both of them. There is nobody who can do what he does. Barring *knock on wood* a career ending injury or some sort, I've got no doubts he will finish with 400 career homers. POSSIBLY even 500 if he has a few huge seasons in the next 3-4 years. If he got to 500+ homers and pitched great for a few more seasons, plus a couple WS wins with the Dodgers, how could it possibly be debated that he's the greatest of all time?
Ohtani to dodgers hopefully bring s a World Series for years to come

The problem we all share is will he not stop being excellent and his prices never come back down. That's the hardest part

Some in the off season. It’s tough - we want his card because we believe he is a generational/transcendent player but if that’s true then why would his nieces come down?
It’s a battle. I hope he stays healthy and keeps doing amazing things.

Guys, this is so easy...Series 2 FLAGSHIP Rainbow Foil in a 10 for $500. Same print run as the golds /2018. Even less rainbows graded at psa in total. Golds go for $2k. Rainbow for $500.
I think the same about the Limited Edition version. Only 999 of those ever printed.
Chris here - problem with rainbow foils is they’ll never be as popular as golds. Never. Golds have legacy. Started on 1992 and began current numbering in 2001. These have history. They’re always going to be in demand. Always desirable. Longest running flagship parallel.
Rainbow foils look good and they are condition sensitive but no long history, no legacy. Topps even started making Gold foils now to go with rainbow foils.
It’s not always about the print runs. Look at green refractors #/99 - sometimes blues #/150 outsell them!
Rainbow Ohtani gems for $500 seems like a good price. About 1/4 of the gold. Maybe some room to grow. But please dont count on them catching the gold.
The PSA 10 pop counts show foils have about 2X more gems than the golds as well.
I’d be very wary long term.

Topps gold may have 2x the print run but I’d take it over the “limited edition” cards all day long!

2018 dynasty ohtani
Chris here - these cards do look great. And if there’s a player whose dynasty cards could really take off, Ohtani might be that player because he has no first bowman chrome autos!
Wait until Ohtani is nearing the end of his career and has had a few consecutive down years. When he’s 37-38. Or a year or 2 after his retirement. His cards will be cheaper as most people will be more interested in the “can’t miss” prospects. Happened to Jordan and Griffey. And will happen to Ohtani too.
That’s going to require a LOT of patience!
I get annoyed when people get rare parallels autographed. Oh well
Chris here - Ultra modern/modern in person autos do nothing for me.
I get it as something for your PC, but now that almost every player signs in multiple sets for topps, I dont see the appeal.
(Possible exclusion for some SSP, though I have not made up my mind)

@@SpitballinCards I think this is the time guys prices are the highest in their careers and this is some of the best baseball he will be playing. The injury risk is always a possibility and with how inflated all his prices are so far beyond everyone else, it just seems like it’s too high….especially at his age. Basically I don’t see how his prices can go much higher. I’m worried his cards will do what trouts will do over the next 5-10 years. I also think card prices are generally all inflated and we will all be losing money in the long run so I just try to collect what I really like. Also with how short sighted the hobby is, all it will take is one bad season or another injury and I think prices will drop pretty big.

@@robselley9298 I agree with a lot of what you say, but i think it depends on the card and if you want to hold long term and what you believe his place in history will be.
Players that change the game will always be valuable. If you believe Ohtani will be among the greatest of all time and who has changed the game, then I think that will add value.
Numbered cards and limited print will always have more value. I believe his non rookie cards are priced way too high, but his rookie cards could still grow long term.
Lastly, I don’t think his cards will be able to increase much more short term. If you want to hold long term, buy the right card and think he will be considered an all time great, there is definite room for his card prices to grow.
Guys I just don't understand why cards that are signed and ain't pack pulled are looked at in a bad view...makes no sense to me?? Especially if the auto looks nice and like it's supposed to be there like that independence day....and it's authenticated by psa.....just haven't figured out this over all view from most in the hobby...like I get they white out the card so the auto pops on the pack pulled or leave a special space for the auto but some of the in person autos look better than pack pulled...that independence day was great but u guys don't like it???? I don't get it boyz
Chris here - couple things for me.
Cards pulled from packs are the way they’re meant to be. Pack pulled autos are - in my mind - an autographed card. It’s part of the card.
An in person auto is a card with an autograph added. It’s different. And they’re only as rare as the card itself.
Most players sign. They’re not particularly hard to get - for the most part. Not rare. And not special.
They can be fun PC items with good stories, but I have almost zero interest in buying someone else’s.
The biggest exception to this is obviously vintage. Because there weren’t pack pulled on card autos back then and now less chances for autos.
@SpitballinCards ya I get it,most in person autos don't look good, just looks like writing on a card usually ruins it, but if its done correctly and on the right card in the right space with the right sized and colored pen.....can take it to the next level...that independence day looked pretty good man, maybe the auto could been just a tad lower but pffft fire
