Depending on the game choices, you actually can make a series of decisions that will cause her to conclude she isn't imagining things and she needs to leave the house, but it doesn't matter on that pathway because the monster is already in the house, and you still end up having to escape/fight it off.
Oh, if only there was a psychological horror game where the leading character gets to make all the right choices by utilizing their common sense to the fullest instead of making brain-dead decisions that screws them over in the end...
If they used common sense, all horror movies would be kinda boring, tho, like, the main character would notise something's off and proceed to solve it in the adequate way in the situation, completely bypassing the scary shit

The rational part of your brain is telling you something roughly human sized is coming into your home at night. Either A) unlikely as it is a monster is coming in. B) A neighbor playing a mean spirited prank. C) Some nut job who is still debating on in which order your murder/rape should go. Either way rational thought says something is in the house every night so sleep ANYWHERE ELSE and put cameras inside.
Okay so tenants keep disappearing or leaving while saying there is something wrong, there is an extremely suspicious house next door. But you know what all blames goes to the tenants because there is no way there is something wrong with that place... I suggest... some restructuring at the police station...
It makes sense this is based on Junji Ito's stories. Not just the horror aspect, but how the protagonist doesn't seem to do anything about the situation they're in despite the warning signs. For example, the protagonist for Uzumaki (forgot her name) makes no attempt to leave her town even though many disturbing events occurred right in front of her and almost always was in danger of getting killed.
Even so, in Uzumaki, you could argue that the curse of the spiral got to Kirie. And they tried leaving eventually, only to find that it was impossible. But here, there is no (told) reason as to why Namie whould make these retarded decisions.
Because the characters in Junji Ito are affected by powers beyond themselves, in that one manga with the holes, the main character is mad that everyone is being so easily manipulated, only to become manipulated himself.
Yep everyone is caught under a spell and even when they do try to leave the town they find that space-time is warped and all paths not only lead back to the town but they arrive further into the future and see that things have gotten even worse. Also ships that tried to come to evacuate them at one point got swallowed by sudden whirlpools.

Surprisingly though, the story that this is inspired by "The Window Next Door" has the protagonist reacting very rationally to the horror things happening. I.e. "bollocks to all this I'm not staying in this room." I managed to suspend my disbelief the first time trough but watching this playthrough it becomes a bit infuriating how horror protags seem to ignore the fact that "someone is breaking and entering into my house" is a legitimate reason for panic and calling the authorities.
This game is spooky, and I really like the gameboy-esque color palette(I actually think the game wouldn't be half as spooky without it), but I just can't get over the horrible decisions the main character makes, it just make me wanna shout through the screen at them
Protag: "Looks like someone/something broke into the house in the middle of the night. I'll just clean up the dirty footprints and figure out what it was tomorrow." *The next day* Protag: "I just got chased out of the house by some monster that clearly wants to kill me! It is strange how the camera remains in the item menu after she flashes her way out of the closet. The whole dragged out by the ankle part, I assumed she lost it after it went off. RaineMan213 to be fair, in Uzumaki, Shuichi was desperate to take Kirie outta town before things got frenzy but she refused because she gotta stay with her mom and pop. the spiral has gotten into her somehow. he's also by far the second most woke protagonist in Ito's world. the first is Yukari from Village of Sirens. that girl is a badass.
In fact, there was only one instance of a Junji Ito MC being actually rational and believeable, which ironically is from the story that most probably inspired this game "The Window Next Door". It follows a similar plot, only with the protag living with his fathers, him refusing to stay in the room and at the end he says "I'm gonna convinve my parents to leave this place"

The main character reminds me of all the husbands from the show "The Haunting". Their family sees the shit, they finally saw things but the denial is real so they wait for more things to go wrong.
I'd like to see a horror game or story where the MC has more than one functioning brain cell. They can either succeed or fail. I'll be happy with either. I really liked the movie Stay Alive. Sure it was cheesy as snot but the MCs had more than one functioning brain cell even though all but two died. I do like the art style and I never heard of Junji.

Nah, she just remarks how it's that brand new nail puller she bought. Living as a protagonist in an RPG world must be horrifying. You never know what rational actions you are able to perform, as some unseen force dictates whatever is possible to do and think. Joking aside though, I felt that a good part of the unsettling horror in this game stemmed from having to indulge the main characters idiotic lack of self-preservation. Hide in the closet and wait for it to corner you? SURE! I TOTALLY DON'T MIND!
Good creepy vibe throughout. As I said, I'm not familiar with the inspiration, but this was still a good horror game. I like the vagueness to the monster. My main gripe is that our hero has no common sense.

I think that were Junji Ito and for games like these to actually attempt to go into detail about 'what the creature was' or 'where the creature came from' would only result in some really half-assed, crappy backstory that offsets the entire thing by its cliche or generally painfully stupid nature existing instead. I'd much rather take stylised direction over flat-out description and an information dump that would distract me from the tone in the first place. I definitely agree that the game had good design and direction, and therefore I think that a 'complete' ending would have taken more away from it than what it might have done to benefit it, instead

I have the WORST fear of the unknown/dark or oblivion. This scared the fuck out of me once everyone else was asleep and I was in a near dark room. No one can look into my window, not even myself. And even I can't fit through it and I'm a rather small girl. With that being said, I can stare out my bedroom door (And I have a nice view of it on my mirror too) and I can just imagine all the horrors that could waltz in. I wouldn't suggest looking at Junji Ito's stories/mangas unless you are a strong willed person. He gave me a new fear practically.
Although your fear is probably worse than mine, I feel ya xD. I always feel paranoid in the dark especially when I use to train outside at night (which only lasted 2-3 nights after I felt like someone was watching me x.x) xD, but not being able to see ANYTHING is the worse for me to comprehend X.X Every time I do my dishes there's literally a window in my face with a full blanket of darkness while as well having two extra windows to my left so whenever it turns pitch black and if the blinds aren't down my paranoia is to the max.😂😵 After a quick look Junji Ito's art style I can see where this takes inspiration x.x I have no doubt Ito-Sans mangas are terrifying so they'll definitely be worth a read after I finish reading some other stories.😁😀
The only one I can think of where the protag wasn't an idiot was Prometheus (from the Alien franchise). Towards the end when the big bad starts slaughtering folks, she nopes right out.

Man this game really does give off a Junji Ito vibe, not explaining whatever it is, how the protag ends up freaked out and never having their mystery solved, they did a good job. Like you said with the writing, it really is super well influenced and well done. I'd totally dig more games like this, as much as I love symbolism heavy, lore heavy horror, nothing quite gives me the chills like Junji Ito's creepy unexplained horrifying mysteries. Also his slice of life cat manga. The truest horror of them all.
In Junji Ito stories the world doesn't follow normal logic, it's like living in Eerie Indiana. Weird or horrific things just happen and the world accepts it.
It's the same line of thinking, it's not supposed to make sense! It's supposed to be weird and creepy and vague and not explain 'why'. There's no explanation as to why there's no entrance at all, that's part of the experience!

Meh, this one is okay at best. I understand that some horrors like to have a little vagueness, but this was too vague for me. And so the suspense fell flat. But if I were this woman, I would have gotten the first ending: burn that house to the ground!!!

I don't know if anyone else gets this but as scary as the game is, Manly's voice is just so comforting it kinda feels comforting. He protect us from the spookies!

I like how Manly tries to explain/point out the evidences clearly laid in-front of the in-game character while she states that there's not enough "solid evidence." Kinda like the skeptics vs believers scenario, basically.
I think the kid who lived there previously was kidnapped and killed by their neighbour. Now the kid haunts the house because his father failed to save him.. His father did go missing also trying to find his son

Actually, you can get different dialogue with the order of the thoughts you analyze. If you get the right order, she decides to pack up and leave, not be stupid and hide in the damn closet. 😑 But unfortunately this doesn't have any impact on the endings, you either end up burning along with the creature or you get out with the house on fire.
I've seen other gameplay videos of this, and played it once with a friend in the past ways back. I remember in one version playthrough where instead of hiding in the closet, you first walk up to the gunk covered door and the creature corners you there. And instead of the camera to scare it, you knock it out of the way by beating it with the nail pusher, and then run. I don't know else that could lead on to but.... Just being honest.

Just played this. It's okay. For a Junji Ito inspired game it doesn't have much in common with his works, though. The art of the creature is nice, though, a good recreation of his art style in sprite form.

It is strange how the camera remains in the item menu after she flashes her way out of the closet. The whole dragged out by the ankle part, I assumed she lost it after it went off. To be fair there was no escape in Gyo, the whole world got screwed, though I was surprised at how shitty the military was at dealing with it.
RaineMan213 to be fair, in Uzumaki, Shuichi was desperate to take Kirie outta town before things got frenzy but she refused because she gotta stay with her mom and pop. the spiral has gotten into her somehow. he's also by far the second most woke protagonist in Ito's world. the first is Yukari from Village of Sirens. that girl is a badass.
In fact, there was only one instance of a Junji Ito MC being actually rational and believeable, which ironically is from the story that most probably inspired this game "The Window Next Door". It follows a similar plot, only with the protag living with his fathers, him refusing to stay in the room and at the end he says "I'm gonna convinve my parents to leave this place"

The main character reminds me of all the husbands from the show "The Haunting". Their family sees the shit, they finally saw things but the denial is real so they wait for more things to go wrong.

I'd like to see a horror game or story where the MC has more than one functioning brain cell. They can either succeed or fail. I'll be happy with either. I really liked the movie Stay Alive. Sure it was cheesy as snot but the MCs had more than one functioning brain cell even though all but two died. I do like the art style and I never heard of Junji.

Still. Plot-wise, if a room was locked, had a window barricaded, why the hell would you get off the wooden planks. The window literally only had 1 view, and other than the neighbor's house, it had no other view! It's as if she literally demanded the horror to come to her. But what the heck, it's a Junji Ito story, of course, the MC will do the opposite...

If I found a window barricaded in my house and was told the prior occupant was crazy, I wouldn't start assuming monsters are real. But you bet your ass that I'd place the boards back up as soon as I found the footprints and unlocked latch.

Nah, she just remarks how it's that brand new nail puller she bought. Living as a protagonist in an RPG world must be horrifying. You never know what rational actions you are able to perform, as some unseen force dictates whatever is possible to do and think.
Joking aside though, I felt that a good part of the unsettling horror in this game stemmed from having to indulge the main characters idiotic lack of self-preservation. Hide in the closet and wait for it to corner you? SURE! I TOTALLY DON'T MIND!

Good creepy vibe throughout. As I said, I'm not familiar with the inspiration, but this was still a good horror game. I like the vagueness to the monster. My main gripe is that our hero has no common sense.
I liked this game! It reminded me of an old school gameboy game. It had a slow start but it was also a pretty short game. And the sounds were so good! That monster was creepy!

I think that were Junji Ito and for games like these to actually attempt to go into detail about 'what the creature was' or 'where the creature came from' would only result in some really half-assed, crappy backstory that offsets the entire thing by its cliche or generally painfully stupid nature existing instead. I'd much rather take stylised direction over flat-out description and an information dump that would distract me from the tone in the first place. I definitely agree that the game had good design and direction, and therefore I think that a 'complete' ending would have taken more away from it than what it might have done to benefit it, instead

This legit scared the hell out of me with the fear of the unknown not knowing what or when something would happen then seeing that bloody thing chase ya made it even more horrifying with some intensity x.x There's probably more scarier RPG Maker Games but this is the creepiest shit I've ever seen from an RPG game.😂
Update (14/16): Okay so the game is new which would explain why there were only two channels that played it for now xD. It's still a pretty good game imo and Manly did a fantastic Manly Let's Play of it as well.😀😁
I have the WORST fear of the unknown/dark or oblivion.
This scared the fuck out of me once everyone else was asleep and I was in a near dark room. No one can look into my window, not even myself. And even I can't fit through it and I'm a rather small girl.
With that being said, I can stare out my bedroom door (And I have a nice view of it on my mirror too) and I can just imagine all the horrors that could waltz in.
I wouldn't suggest looking at Junji Ito's stories/mangas unless you are a strong willed person. He gave me a new fear practically.
Although your fear is probably worse than mine, I feel ya xD. I always feel paranoid in the dark especially when I use to train outside at night (which only lasted 2-3 nights after I felt like someone was watching me x.x) xD, but not being able to see ANYTHING is the worse for me to comprehend X.X
Every time I do my dishes there's literally a window in my face with a full blanket of darkness while as well having two extra windows to my left so whenever it turns pitch black and if the blinds aren't down my paranoia is to the max.😂😵
After a quick look Junji Ito's art style I can see where this takes inspiration x.x I have no doubt Ito-Sans mangas are terrifying so they'll definitely be worth a read after I finish reading some other stories.😁😀

Man this game really does give off a Junji Ito vibe, not explaining whatever it is, how the protag ends up freaked out and never having their mystery solved, they did a good job. Like you said with the writing, it really is super well influenced and well done.
I'd totally dig more games like this, as much as I love symbolism heavy, lore heavy horror, nothing quite gives me the chills like Junji Ito's creepy unexplained horrifying mysteries.

In Junji Ito stories the world doesn't follow normal logic, it's like living in Eerie Indiana. Weird or horrific things just happen and the world accepts it.

It's the same line of thinking, it's not supposed to make sense! It's supposed to be weird and creepy and vague and not explain 'why'. There's no explanation as to why there's no entrance at all, that's part of the experience!

Meh, this one is okay at best. I understand that some horrors like to have a little vagueness, but this was too vague for me. And so the suspense fell flat. But if I were this woman, I would have gotten the first ending: burn that house to the ground!!!

these kinds of stories really remind me of some SCPs. Or maybe it's the SCPs that remind me of these stories... Still, they're great. You don't need to explain a horror story for it to be good. It's even creepier if nothing is ever explained!

I like how Manly tries to explain/point out the evidences clearly laid in-front of the in-game character while she states that there's not enough "solid evidence." Kinda like the skeptics vs believers scenario, basically.

I think the kid who lived there previously was kidnapped and killed by their neighbour. Now the kid haunts the house because his father failed to save him.. His father did go missing also trying to find his son

Actually, you can get different dialogue with the order of the thoughts you analyze. If you get the right order, she decides to pack up and leave, not be stupid and hide in the damn closet. 😑 But unfortunately this doesn't have any impact on the endings, you either end up burning along with the creature or you get out with the house on fire.
I've seen other gameplay videos of this, and played it once with a friend in the past ways back. I remember in one version playthrough where instead of hiding in the closet, you first walk up to the gunk covered door and the creature corners you there. And instead of the camera to scare it, you knock it out of the way by beating it with the nail pusher, and then run. I don't know else that could lead on to but.... Just being honest.

Just played this. It's okay. For a Junji Ito inspired game it doesn't have much in common with his works, though. The art of the creature is nice, though, a good recreation of his art style in sprite form.
