Canada had a chance to buy a fleet of these things and turned it down in favor of the F35. I love the F35 and what it brings and I understand the decision had a lot to do with NORAAD compatibility, but when you have a tiny airforce and a huge amount of airspace to cover the Gripen just makes more sense to me.

@@jasonolson1593 An American here, and after seeing the Gripen perform in the Red Flag Exercises in Alaska, I am an avid fan, placing more faith in Sweden's 4.5 generation airframe than I do with the F-35. I have come to the conclusion that the F-35 is repeating the same doctrinal failures of the F-4 Phantom. Conversely, the Gripen knows exactly what its mission is, and doesn't pretend to do anything else.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why small European countries like the Czech Republic and Switzerland (and even Poland or Finland) are buying the F35 and not the Gripen C or E? It is nearly as capable as the F35 and is so much cheaper to operate (or buy in the case of the C model). I guarantee there will be buyers remorse when they realize they can't fly as much due to cost per hour. I understand this is partly due to the connection with the US but the Gripen does use some US components so that connection is still there if not to a smaller degree.

One of the biggest factors in fighter jet cost is whether they are single engine (Gripen, F-16) or twin engine (Typhoon, Rafale, F-15). The engine is the component around which the rest of the aircraft is built, and they are $10s millions per engine. That's a big chunk of the cost difference, in both purchase price and cost per hour. Double the engines means double the consumables, maintenance and checks.

Hungary already operates Gripen, they only recieved a few more. Totaling 18 Gripen C/D variants, If anything it is safe to assume Russia knows the inside out of these older variants. Gripen E altough looking very similar, is a completely new airframe, slightly larger overall, and many components have been changed. It could even be considered to be Gripen 2.0 if you want.

That's the most stupid thing I've ever heard. There's a reason technology has evolved over the entire history of mankind and that's to make individual skill gaps irrelevant. This is why bows beat slings, crossbows beat bows and guns beat crossbows. This is why the best fighter pilot in history piloting a Mig-15 will never be able to beat the dumbest, most incompetent pilot on an F-35.

From what is shown on official sources the Gripen E, and it's ew-shield/countermeasures, allmoast seems better then the ew of the F35? Maybe it has to do really well in that percpective since the stronger radar-signature, but no dubt the electric warfare capacity, aswell as the weapon systems, of this monster is really impressive.

I see the Grippen as the heir of the F5/F20. You need to have a modern low(er) cost platform to supply your allies. Not all your allies need, or can pay, for F35.

Just for reference, re: joint wargames engagements vs USAF/USN/USMC - the US military likes to play in "Nightmare" mode, and generally handicaps their pilots, operating on the principle that their pilots, and the force as a whole gain little to nothing if we go in gangbusters.
Not saying a F-15/F-16 vs. Gripen engagement would be "USA is playing on godmode" against the Gripen if they weren't handicapped, but it would not be as lopsided as it sounds here. A relatively recent example was in recent wargames where the Philippines Air Force was involved as an opponent, they scored a couple of simulated intercepts with their aircraft on F-22s. The rules of engagement required visual range engagement, and the F-22s were equipped with external drop tanks carrying 6000lbs of extra fuel, negating their stealth and reducing their maneuverability. The Philippines were flying KAI FA-50PHs, a light attack version of the KAI T-50 supersonic trainer.
That said, Gripen C's would be more than a match for the Su-35/Su-34 or the MiG-27s, especially given the pilot skill delta and the ability to utilize current spec NATO BVR munitions. Going to Gripen E would make it even more lopsided.

17:23 Question: How quickly can the Gripen be ready for use by Ukrainian pilots? Would they need more time to "translate" the weapons like with other NATO planes? If so, then maybe the F-16s are still the better choice for now? Idk.

It’s rumored that Ukrainian pilots have trained on Gripen in simulator. Personally, I think that Gripen shares design philosophy with other Western fighters. So coming from MiG or Shukoi, any training in F-16 should be largely applicable to Gripen.
