I see your point, but I think Augusto's sloppy takedown attempt was, in fact, a solid strategy against Rafa. He very likely knew that Rafa would pull guard (like he does in almost every match), so he wanted to make an attempt (even a sloppy one) at a takedown and create that ambiguous situation where the ref had no choice but to award him points. Sloppy takedown, but great strategy.
You've got one guy with a crazy heavy pressure game and then you've got the berimbolo master, great match between two guys just believing in their technique. So calm and patient, no wasted movement.

It was tied 2 points a piece while Rafa was holding onto a one advantage lead, and Tanquinho also had a penalty point against him. Because he came out of the last 50/50 exchange in a dominant position and forced Rafa down as they were going out of bounds, he got two advantages which gave him the win.

well, i use to think the bolo was cheap.. but I disagree. like all moves it requires much practice and refined skill. I personally dont like how the move itself influenced and changed the tournament game, but I still respect it as a technique. I hate it as an entire game plan tho!!! down with double guard pulls, more take downs n throws!!!

About the beginning, if you have a hand on the legs when the person pulls guard, it counts as a takedown. I wasn't able to see the score so I'm not sure if Tanquinho got the points there. That's how the rules work though. Pulling guard during a takedown isn't pulling guard, it's getting taken down.
I dont know for sure if that was a takedown at the beginning because it was an attempt but then rafael used it to pull guard can someone lighten this for me up

It's only an advantage if it's a serious submission attempt where the opponent is forced to defend. That toe hold wasn't good enough to tap a blue belt in my opinion.

Rafael Mendez is a guard player... You slap his ankles before he pulls guard and you get 2 points. Its not that they're horrible takedown attempts, they're game changing points.
Rafael mendes is, from an untrained perspective, one of the most influential to watch. He doesnt do stuff like marcelo garcia and jacare that require insane unusual strength, he just does what he does. In also really stoned so excuse my french but despite improper paragraph form, id simoly like to conclude this run on sentence by sayingmendes is the man and has a very "teaching" style. Mendes 50/50 (in no gi it looks better cause the use of heelhooks), berimblo, and the situations that cause both fighters for long periods to on there buts looks super ridiculous to untrained. Marcelo and Jacare style just look more what you'd expect. Especially how fast Marcelo and Jacare excute it... Compare a Jacare highlights the to Bernardo farira or Telles. If you pull guard and they grab your leg or sweep your foot standing even tho you pulled guard it will be counted as a takedown. Even tho raf pulled guard tan did shoot and stuff his legs it was at the same time smart move on tan cuz he knew rafa would pull guard right away.

Rafa made a mistake by pulling guard before he completely stuffed the takedown. If he had clearly stuffed it, then pulled guard, no points would have been awarded. Rafa cut it a little too close. The rules are pretty clear on situations like this, and for good reason. This is to avoid ambiguous situations where one fighter might say "Oh, that wasn't a takedown. I was pulling guard." It's obvious that Rafa was pulling, but since Augusto was still in contact, he was (correctly) awarded points.

Why no takedown points for Augusto at the 18 second mark? He was clearly shooting and even had Rafa's left pant sleeve when Rafa pulled guard. I'm a big Mendes Bros fan, member of their site, but would like to see the lighter weights attacking each other for takedowns like the big guys instead of always watching both of the fighters racing to pull guard, and nothing dissuades that more than not giving takedown points when they are earned.

Why no takedown points for Augusto at the 18 second mark? He was clearly shooting and even had Rafa's left pant sleeve when Rafa pulled guard. I'm a big Mendes Bros fan, member of their site, but would like to see the lighter weights attacking each other for takedowns like the big guys instead of always watching both of the fighters racing to pull guard, and nothing dissuades that more than not giving takedown points when they are earned.
