- In this episode, I repot the last tree from my $50 Challenge tree shopping spree at Otten Bros. Garden Center and Landscaping. The Ming Aralia seems to be somewhat of the rage of late. Or I'm just slow getting on the bandwagon. It was a fun repot. I hope you enjoy the journey.

Hi Dave. Been a grower of ming aralia bonsai for over 30 years. Couple quick notes.... they love confined roots. They also hate their roots worked on in general so I only repot mine every 5-7 years at most. The roots get fleshy and fine almost like azalea roots with age so we have to be gentle with them on repots. I have some trees in the 30-35 range and if kept from their leggy tendencies they make superb bonsai. Constant pruning is a must. And with easy cuttings can easily make into a nice forest in a few years time. All the best with yours.
Excellent info. Many thanks!
I just purchased my first a couple days ago. Its pretty big (wish I could add a photo!) I have never done bonsai before and this video came up when I put the name of the plant in it. not sure I am breve enough to try with the one I just got but it has def peaked an interest!
I wanna have big trunk faster .. how do I do it?
You are the Bonsai Master. Your decision of the pot, will be great. Mings are always a good choice for bonsai.
Looks good Dave, nice clean up on the tree!
Actually going to buy on on these thanks for the inspiration. Didn’t know these where ok to keep inside 😍
A real nice looking variegated tree. Great job styling the tree.
Hi Dave enjoy your videos I just got 3 Aralia list week putting them in blue pots
Hi Dave this is Chuck/Donna 1 is going a rock pot really enjoy all your videos and trips you and your son air !😉👍🏻
We are in Seminole Fla , hot hot hot
Nice!
Looks so much better after that trimming
I really like the pot you chose
Looks great Dave
Nice Ming Dave! Love the variegated. Good use of the rock to redirect the root!
Worked out great and perhaps I get on the bandwagon too lol.
Ah yes. Ming aralia. A special place in My heart was actually my first attempt at bonsai back circa 2004. Of course they aren't really trees. The branching isn't really trainable and the trunks are kinda just fleshy lumps that don't really display a strong nebari. Always just looks like a tropical ginseng with celery on top. But it's still a fun plant to keep around the house.
Nice tree that ended up in a nice ppt. It is a tropical tree so with right conditions in the plant room it fills that pot pretty fast I think.
I fell for them too. I didn't find a variegated one though, that one is wicked!
I get a Boxwood too, my are 10 years old
Greetings Dave watching your video about the ming Aralia. I purchased one wish I could send a picture. I was a little late for watering as I noticed a few places that indicated the need for water. Its been potted up in a nice bonsai pot. Should I trim the parts that are dropping or give it time. As a mom I worry and stress over my kids and my plants. Thanks for your advice.
@@BeckyBledsoe-qj1rn if they are drooping and changing color, it’s likely too late for that foliage or branch. Just clip off that portion.

Wow~ Amazing Bonsai ^^
Include Like 78 , I leave 3 Presents.
Have a good relationship.
My friend, always stay Connected.
Have you ever tried Kanuma soil for the Ming-they are supposed to do well with it.
@@carolficorilli9768 I have not. Do you know why it’s better?
.....🤨🤔YOU COULD USE A STONE TO SPLIT THE ROOTS😌
so when you make big cuts like that, the roots and branches, you dont have to put anything on them to help heal it?
Depends on the size wound. The bigger the wound the more I’m likely to put sone cut paste on.
Great video, very helpful for a beginner! What is your soil mixture? Pumice, lava, fine pine bark, and calcined clay? I liked your pot choice, I would have put the Ming trunk to the left of center. Thanks for the video!
Lava, pumice and Akadama.
Do you have to use wire for a pot like that? I don't like how you cut that plant. It was beautiful in it's original form.
Sometimes. I use rock a lot to hold trees into place until roots take hold.
What soil are you using, keeping in mind that Arelia's are acidic
@@carolficorilli9768 Akadama and pumice is soil base, then a little peat moss or pine needles for organic matter to help we with better PH.
took so longer time to choose pot uff
Didn’t mention what soil you used! 🤔
I’ve been watching your older videos and have to know what breed of dog is Milo?? I’ve really enjoyed the videos and your experiments.
You know I don’t even know. He and the family moved recently.
@@DavesBonsai I will miss his barking. 😂😂😂
@@margaretmiller4899 I’m not sure I will.😁
Just bought some baby varigated ming aralias. They are so tiny that it's going to be a while before they get as big as yours. How old is this one? Any advice on growing a bigger thicker trunk? Do I need to cut some of the tops off you think to allow the trunk more energy to grow? How do you get those cuttings to grow roots to create new mings? Thanks!
Grant, the Ming still a new species for me. I'm getting very slow results in my plant room for growth at the moment which tells me more light or more heat is needed. More light in the summer outside was too much light, so I'm going with more heat. Thicker trunks come lots of growth, then cutting back, lots of growth, then cutting back. For non tropical trees, we put trees back in the ground to explode with growth. For the ming, a bigger pit, maybe some bigger soil particles to allow bigger faster growth. Warm roots will help with cuttings, so try heat matts.
@@DavesBonsai Thanks! So I guess balance is the key to success.
Is there an update?
A sad update. This one got too much direct sun, then didn’t rebound and died. Bummer. If I had my green house/frame then, I imagine it would be in good shape. They do like humidity.
En español por favor lo veo desde México.
