Pro tip: When someone shows you their paint job and askes what you think ALWAYS find something positive to say. When someone takes the time to paint their minis they should be encouraged to continue.
100% I always try to find at least one thing to compliment and then ask them about the models and how they painted on, then compliment them on whatever they say they focused on. I ONLY offer criticism if it's asked for.
Casey, you’ve 1000% touched on what we believe is why gamers love these paints. Anything that makes painting more fun, easier, and faster allows them to Get More Time for Gaming!
I used to paint entire armies for a friend of mine, about 20k points worth of Tyranids, Necrons, Tau, Chaos Marines and Daemons, including specialty models and titans from forgeworld over the course of a decade. He tried to paint the Tau himself, before the advent of contrast paints or even shade washes - no nuln oil, no liquid talent was released yet. Ever since getting children, I didn’t even have time to paint my own stuff, so I stopped painting for him as well. Contrast paints changed this, more or less overnight. He was able to paint an entire new Chaos Daemons army by himself, including large models like Belakor and Kabanda, as well as a full Adeptus Titanicus force. Contrast paints are such a great starting point for people who are shying away from painting their minis! Your models look great, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for posting this video, it has been a huge inspiration for me. After getting the mega set for my birthday, I've painted more minis in the past month than I have in the last 20 years. You are absolutely right about the feelings of accomplishment and the motivation that finishing a mini gives you.
I think you're right. Getting "rewarded" with making progress and seeing results quickly really helps to keep you motivated and makes painting more fun!
You and Brent are the Mini Painting Parents we all need. He is overwhelmingly positive at all times and you give us the hard truths we don't want to hear but need to hear (in a positive way, of course). Thank you so much!
You're absolutely right in the "free-flowing" part of the process about painting with Speedpaints. I use the older range, and the much discussed reactivation problem is to me a useful tool in my arsenal, allowing blends, gradients and effects otherwise difficult or just bothersome to obtain with classic paints and techiniques. And very often I just go with the flow about mix ratios and such, just enjoying the moment.
Speed/contrast style paints work a treat on fantasy models. Like you said they have lots of details for the paint to work with. Harder to use with flat panels you usually find on sci fi stuff.
Iv been tattooing 10years and this is some of the best advice. I look at other tattooists work and get my mind blown. Never compare jst do ur best, enjoy it and improve! :) great job Casey
Recently ive gotten into using the contrast/speedpaint ranges to do wet brush blending and it is the most satisfying and joyous painting experience ive ever had. Start with whatever paint color is lighter, lay that on, and then dip the very tip of yoyr brush (im using a size 4 brush, so plenty of belly) into the darker color to begin the blend. Its like magic for transitions, and juat feels insanely good to do
This video helped me get back to painting for fun. I got too focused on making things as detailed and as meticulous as I could and just the way you talked about painting really helped. Thank you.
Too true about how seeing better paintjobs can discourage someone. I lost motivation to paint for a few months after I realized how much I still have left to learn, but I bought some speedpaints, learned some simple techniques like drybrushing and I'm painting some models that in my opinion look amazing.
As a player with a lot of bare metal and plastic in need of paint, this video helped me get a little of that fire back to paint my older models and get some so they can be fielded. Thanks for that!
Agree 100%. I was coming to this same realization during covid. I started doing a lot of underpainting with inks, washes and Contrast paints and realized that the payoff comes when a model is finished and ready to play, not from the quality. And that getting 80+% of the result in only 20% of the time is waaaaaay better than taking a mini to 95+% but taking far longer to get there, longer to finish, longer to play and less of a payoff, but with more burnout over a project. To the point that looking at perfectly painted minis now makes me think "wasted time" more than "that looks awesome" Then I tried the 1.0 Speedpaints and this cemented for me. I got such better results, faster than I did with inks, washes and Contrast that I bought the AP 1.0 Mega-set, sold all but 3 of my Contrast paints and started using SP as my primary paints. Am getting the new Complete set and will give my current set to a friend. I've got a couple games where I went for pure speed and averages under 20 minutes per mini (not much in the way of touch ups or additional highlights), and one game I finished in a single sitting. Perfectly good tabletop quality and knocking out a game like that is so very rewarding and satisfying it changed the way I approach it all now
I am so glad to see you point out the fact that a model doesn't have to be painted to an insane level to be "good". I have heard so many people claim that they can't paint minis very well because they are comparing themselves to Golden Demon winners and yet their minis still look amazing.
I firmly believe that the best way to get good at painting is just to have fun painting, because if you're having fun, then you'll do it more (maybe trying something new every now and then to keep things interesting). It's great that we have tools that seem to facilitate that now.
I got into the hobby because I liked the painting. I love good contrast type paints. I use cans and brushes. I can add more details from the speedpaint finish. With a few edge highlights and washes and it's pretty amazing work. But the best part. The speedpaint gets you to something to be proud of that you can add to and build on.
Im currently repainting my 2nd edition 40k ork army boxed set with army painter speedpaint, I'm absolutely loving it, for the early bright style of painting you really can do one coat over a light zenathal primer then use the reactivation feature and a q tip to do super fast and easy highlights. . Knocked out 10 boys in less than an hour and I'm really happy with how they look.
Several UA-cam channels have made similar videos in the last couple of months- I think it's important to remember that, for the vast majority of us, this is a HOBBY- not a profession. It's something we do because we enjoy it. I have friends that golf. A few are really good. Most are fair. Several SUCK. Yet, they all enjoy golfing. Like what you do. It's YOUR hobby. Don't let anybody talk down YOUR creativity and expression. If others are critical and unappreciative of your work, they don't deserve to experience it.
Really enjoyed painting these up a few years ago and can't wait to paint the new ones. And using speed paints to get models painted up quick and on the table is super rewarding. Adding a colored zenithal base layer for more hue variation with transparent paints is probably my current favorite way to paint.
I see the fear of inadequacy when people compare themselves to others (especially on social sharing platforms) and are fearful to take the first step on the journey to painting a mini. Getting brushes loaded with paint and onto a model is rewarding, as is finishing them regardless of skill level. Regardless of how much you observe others, it’s never as rewarding as taking those first steps, followed by the next one and the next - a journey which you never will finish as we are constantly learning and trying new techniques.
i must admit that you have brought me back to wanting to finish up a table top army for a game, that i have been putting off for so long, because my skill is really lacking, thanks!
Really cool video and it is exactly what I thought in the last weeks. Thanks for you Clip😊 The pile of shame is growing bigger and bigger and that could be very demotivating. The high standards for my own paralysed me for months. But my Mantra for that time is „finished not perfect“. And it helps to find back my motivation. 80% of my Minis getting a Slap Chop + (little bit layering and Highlights her and there) and the really beautiful Minis gets the full Focus of the best I could.
As I sit staring at over 4k points of grey orks that are assembled and ready to paint I think this is the sort of message I needed. Thanks for that and I guess its time to break out the airbrush and get to base coating...
This is such fantastic advice, you have hit the nail on the head. Feelings of inferiority can lead to all kinds of complex thoughts, it is something that I have realised in recent times. Well done!
I've come around to speed paints/contrast over time as I use them as a thicker glaze colour to change the colour or hue of stuff. with a red over a brown i end up with a nice looking leather for example. i am yet to use contrast or speedpaint as it's own paint entirely but I can appreciate why people would
I kind of dig the speed paint minis. I painted up 4 bunnies from D&D for another game as a prototype and knocked the little buggers out in one night with the 1.0 Speed paints. It was a quick paint. 2.0 I hear cure faster but speed paints have their place. You won't win awards but damn for 4 bunnies that I'll use for a offshoot game it was great!
I needed to hear that. I was struggling with painting myself into a yellow corner after having picked Craftworld Iyanden for my first paint job, to the point where I've tossed my army into L.A.'s overnight and plan to repaint it as something more sensible like Ulthwé or a custom paint job.
Since discovering #slapchop last year, I've smashed out about 600 models from my collection since November 22. Loving speed paints/contrast paints and I couldn't agree more; a painted mini is better than an unpainted mini. Ty for the inspiring video.
Yeah for non mettalics, I can't imagine going back to regular paint. It's like, the base paint is so ugly and you need shading and highlight to begin to see something, with speed paint I already have a great model and I make less mistakes because I clearly see the shapes.
At 6:10 in the video you say you will go over how to get rid of the glossy-ness of the green speed paint, but then never do... What did I miss? How do you get rid of it?
Thanks for this video. I’m only just getting into this hobby and that too fairly late and the insecurities were setting in already whenever I went online looking for inspiration for references. You told me everything I needed to hear to ensure that I kept on enjoying myself so thank you for that!
I think people look at speed/contrast paint now they way they used to look at airbrushes. Some people will say it's not "real" painting but it'll soon become just another tool in your arsenal.
I think that the main barrier or issue that people find hard to overcome is not the quality of work on insta/FB, but the cost of these models. Let's face it, if an army didnt cost the same as a used car then you probably wouldnt have the same compunctions about a sloppy paint job
Just commenting on the “looking at other painters and feeling uncertain about our paintjobs” part. I’m a high school teacher, and I only really get a chance to paint nights and weekends, and the people I follow on Instagram paint all day every day. There’s no comparison. I like looking, but I’ve stopped holding myself to that standard. 3:44
I have only experienced AP Speedpaints 1.0 but they are a essential tool in my hobby arsenal. They have reduced the time i spend on a lot of the tedious base/shade/highlight from parts of models like belts/blacks/shaded metallics
I hope you've gotten to play some Underworlds, I've gotten into it recently and found it easy to pickup. I have my Rippa's team drybrushed in prep of speedpaint, but I haven't decided on colours. your wolf fur and skin colours are really nice :)
After years of not painting and a few false starts I recently the exact same realisation. I am still a slow painter but by using speedpaints as a starting point I have now painted 55 zombies from Zombicide Rue Morgue in the past several weeks. 25 of those have just been in the past few days. They look good enough for a tabletop game, they look like a horde and I have enjoyed far more than any other time I painted. I will try and up my level for characters and specials but just making progress is massively uplifting and satisfying. I can even paint at distance without magnifying aids until I need to do the eyes 😂.
About to start off as a first-time painter. I bought the speed paint starter set and black, grey, and white primer. I have some old cheap minis to learn on. after the speed paint base coat do you add a lighter color with the speed paint to highlight the edges or dry brush the lighter color by itself? I don't have the painting terms down, but I'm trying to learn by watching more videos. Great video thanks for encouraging the new guys.
Yeah, imposter syndrome hits really hard when I see some of the great pieces out there. I actually have a huge model I have put off painting for 3 months now because I keep convincing myself that I’m not going to do it Justice.
Looking a these wolfriders had me remember something I wanted to do. I wanted to buy a Ork Boss on Hog and convert it to be riding a giant wolf, and giving him a big hammer.
Make sure not to use a wet palette with speed paints if you don’t want the sponge in your wet palette to stain. The paint seeps right through and stains it quick
hmm, I used mine for this whole project without issue. What brand do you use? I've tried on Redgrass and Army painter and haven't had any bleed. Could be the paper from a specific brand is just a little more porous, definitely good to know before you stain a sponge!
@@eBayMiniatureRescues I used the speed paint on the army painter wet pallet and it stained within a couple hours. I later found that army painter specifically says not to use their speed paints on a wet palette
When you’re highlighting in this video, are you mixing normal acrylics with the base Speedpaint? Or are you mixing a lighter colored Speedpaint with the initial Speedpaint base color?
I loved watching this video, it pushed me over the line to ordering some army painter speed paints to try them out. I often look at my painting station and don’t actually paint because I feel like it takes such a long time, and I don’t get the results I see online. But this seems really encouraging to just finish some models and feel accomplished. I had one (probably basic..) question. When you were talking through the highlighting (after the initial basecoat), I got a little bit confused. Do you highlight using a mix of speed paint and other non speed paints? Or do you just look for a non - speed paint that has a similar colour to the base speed paint and add white to that to create your highlights? I hope that makes sense! Thank you for making this video :)
Normal acrylics were mixed in for the highlights, mostly off-whites and yellows. The speed paint has a good amount of vibrancy so if you highlight with a little bit of white then you can use a lighter speed paint color to bring back that bright saturated color. otherwise, it just works pretty well mixing it into the color. :)
looking at paint jobs online can be very detrimental to your moral as a model painter. As someone who also paints things for my youtube channel I often find myself struggling to get stuff done because I've seen other people's amazing paint jobs and then looked back at my own work and gone "but i am just painting this for play, it doesn't have to looo....... ah damn it needs to look better" and it is that line of thinking that caused me to loose ages painting four models in the time it would normally take me to paint squads because i wanted to push the paintjob further than i normally would for a video I am working on and regretting to a degree
When you talk about highlights you mentioned adding colors like ivory to the brown speed paint you used for the basecoat. When mixing with speed paints are you mixing standard acrylics or speed paint + speed paint?
Great video. Just really well said. You hit on many of my thoughts. I do have one technical question, toward the end you did some highlights and mentioned white as well. Are you still only using speedpaints for all those steps?
The math works out pretty well compared to other types of advertising. As long as they sell 2-3 sets, that they wouldn't have sold otherwise, for every on they give away they break even. They break even even faster if people buy singles or buy direct. Vallejo probably still sends out more than Army Painter does considering the number of full retailer paint racks that show up in the background of painting videos.
Did you have any re-activation issues? I have the 1.0 Speedpaints…and that was a major issue for me. It would come off when I tried highlighting. I would love to hear your honest opinion. Cheers 😊
How do you avoid reactivation? I just started playing with speed paints and as soon as I tried to highlight anything I had a mess of reactivated speed paints.

Speedpaints are a life saver. NO EXCUSES anymore for unpainted models!
Speed/contrast style paints work a treat on fantasy models. Like you said they have lots of details for the paint to work with. Harder to use with flat panels you usually find on sci fi stuff.
Speed paint works fine on flat areas really. It doesn't have the tide mark issues as bad as contrast

Turns out I haven't been counting very well. 63 zombies and brush varnishing gets a bit tedious. 40 to go 😢😂
About to start off as a first-time painter.
Great video, and important message.
🎨Custom necron build and paint scheme, love your content.🎨
Dang Casey. Been really trying to paint in this style recently. Comes out ok. But dang your minis look so crisp. I'll keep at it.
When you’re highlighting in this video, are you mixing normal acrylics with the base Speedpaint? Or are you mixing a lighter colored Speedpaint with the initial Speedpaint base color?
Normal acrylics, just blended with the base tone of speed paint.
I love all the content you make mate, but this right here? This is why I subscribed.
For your highlights were you mixing normal acrylics in with the base Speedpaint colors, or mixing lighter Speedpaint with the base Speedpaint colors?
Normal acrylics were mixed in for the highlights, mostly off-whites and yellows. The speed paint has a good amount of vibrancy so if you highlight with a little bit of white then you can use a lighter speed paint color to bring back that bright saturated color. otherwise, it just works pretty well mixing it into the color. :)
@@eBayMiniatureRescues thanks
Cool and motivating video. Thank you for sharing. 👍
looking at paint jobs online can be very detrimental to your moral as a model painter.
Great video, love the lil green bois. subbed. 🧙♂
Couldn’t agree with you more. I think sometimes people are over critical or get hobby paralysis.
What sonic cleaner do you use?
When you talk about highlights you mentioned adding colors like ivory to the brown speed paint you used for the basecoat. When mixing with speed paints are you mixing standard acrylics or speed paint + speed paint?
Great video. Just really well said. You hit on many of my thoughts. I do have one technical question, toward the end you did some highlights and mentioned white as well. Are you still only using speedpaints for all those steps?
Army Painter is really giving these sets out like candy to pretty much anyone with even a smidge of a social media following, aren’t they?
95k subs is a pretty huge channel as far as wargaming hobbying goes
The math works out pretty well compared to other types of advertising. As long as they sell 2-3 sets, that they wouldn't have sold otherwise, for every on they give away they break even. They break even even faster if people buy singles or buy direct. Vallejo probably still sends out more than Army Painter does considering the number of full retailer paint racks that show up in the background of painting videos.
What kind of tape did you use on your priming stick?
Did you have any re-activation issues? I have the 1.0 Speedpaints…and that was a major issue for me. It would come off when I tried highlighting. I would love to hear your honest opinion. Cheers 😊
How do you avoid reactivation? I just started playing with speed paints and as soon as I tried to highlight anything I had a mess of reactivated speed paints.
