Matthew 24:36 , is not talking about the second question asked by Jesus disciples ; the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ ; but it is the answer to the third question , the end of the world .
The disciples did not ask Jesus when he was coming the second time , but the sign of his coming .
Jesus told they of the sign of his coming in :
Matthew 24:27-31, " 27.For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
28For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
29Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Five were prepared and five weren't. the five that weren't were left outside were unprepared. The reference is from Matthew as well.
