  • Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park.
In Park, among insects, butterflies are a rightfully prominent group with 321 species established so far (80 species of diurnal and 245 species of nocturnal butterflies). Three interesting species from the blue butterfly family are especially in the foreground: the swamp blue Phengaris alcon alcon, the large blue Phengaris arioni and the mountain blue Phengaris alcon rebeli.
The swamp blue Phengaris alcon alcon is a critically endangered species (CR) of butterflies with the densest populations in the Park. This is his story.
