Penguin Cradle Trail - Day 1

- The Penguin Cradle Trail is the jewel in the crown for the North West Walking club here in Tasmania, who planned and built the track a number of decades ago. It was their part in attempting to build a track that connected the north of the state, with the south coast. What's remarkable about the walk is the diversity of scenery. Rugged canyons, wild rivers, wet and dry scIerophyll forest, farmland, buttongrass, road walking, alpine tarns, buttongrass, mountains, waterfalls and in our case, snow were all experienced!
I had wanted to walk it for some time, and we had the opportunity from September 25-30 this year. On Day 1, we organised the car shuffle, and walked from Penguin to Hardstaff Creek.
Music used: "Woodlands" by Wiljan and Xandra

So very beautiful. I have heard all about the walk from your walking partner so it is so good to actually see it. Looking forward to the rest of the days. Thanks for looking after her.
It's weird to see you guys have snow and wintertime. 😀 Oh well, soon it will be the other way around! 😀 All the best!
We're actually into spring now, but Tasmania is well known for its fickle weather! Cradle Mountain will often have summer snowfalls. It was the first time I've ever driven through snow when it was settling!
Thanks, and all the best to you as well :)
A good day walk would be Cape Deslacs and Clifton Beach. Again it's like Bluff Gorge so I recommend following the formed tracks.
Thanks for the idea 🙂
@@LucasChamberlainBy the way your video is great 👍
Good stuff, mate. We're hoping to walk it this August. Very useful for our planning, so thank you.
No worries! Hope it all goes well 🙂
As with the others here I was really looking fwd to you doing this walk. Your commentary is akin to a professional guide. Much appreciated. Very keen to see how the track is following some damage few years back. Good to see this from lockdown Melbourne
No worries! And thanks in regard to the commentary! There certainly was some track damage further down the track; Leven Canyon in particular.
Hope everything's going alright over there in Melbourne 👍
One good thing (of many) I like watching your vids, is pronunciation of the places....i always pronounced it Leven (as to rhyme with heaven) river!
I certainly hope I'm getting the pronunciation accurate! I do know someone else who pronounces it the same way as you, so now I'm not sure...
I’ve always been curious about the Penguin to Cradle Track. Thanks for posting, am looking forward to watching the rest of your journey!
No worries 😀 glad you enjoyed it.
Have been wanting to to this for ages,,,,Tasmanian Trail next it's only 480kms :)
Definitely recommend the PCT if you get the chance! Feels remote, you won't see very many other walkers, but there's still chances to bail if the weather or track conditions become too much.
Haha yep the Tasmanian Trail would be a mammoth trip!
A walk I always wanted to do but never did , your video gives me an opportunity to see what the track is really like , thank you.
No worries 😀
LOVE your videos Lucas. Thanks for bringing on this one, looks epic. Those WE tents looks the business. I wear a WE jacket, which is almost a tent. Love it.
Thanks mate 👍🙂
Looks awesome mate. Looking forward to this new series
Yeah it was a pretty scenic start! Things got even more scenic and dramatic over the following days though!
Good work Lucas. Looking forward to seeing the remaining days which we found increasingly harder.
Thanks Chris 🙂
Yep, the following days were on a whole new level compared to the first day!
Thanks for sharing - from lockdown in Melb! I can't wait to do this walk, I've climbed Black Bluff and thought it was an exceptional place :) Love Tassie!
No worries Dylan, hope everything's going okay in the lockdown for you!
Black bluff is a very wonderful mountain I agree 🙂👍
@@LucasChamberlain Hey! An update 6 months later, I hiked the Penguin to Cradle trail solo this month. Some full on sections in the Leven Canyon and unfortunately severe weather along the Black Bluff Range, but I loved every minute (I wouldn't do this particular walk solo if I had hindsight). I'm enjoying your new videos, all the best :)
@@dylanmraz Thanks mate, glad to hear you ended up getting out and doing the PCT! I haven't actually been on a walk for nearly a month, so I'll have to rectify that soon haha.
It's a great walk however when I did it it basically rained from penguin until Paddy's lake Camp was awesome though btw have you got any vids on walking the mt Lyell summit ? Trying to find a way seems no clear track but several options ?
Nah I haven't been up Mt Lyell yet I'm afraid.
Hi Lucas, can you do this trek with just a map or do you need the track notes? Good videos!
Thanks! The notes are handy to have, but you probably don't actually need them if you're confident with visual navigation and have a bit of knowledge about the walk in advance. 👍
