been watching you for many years and followed so much of your advice without fail. I am doing this tomorrow. I'm planning on doing a 20 gallon long LPS and SPS only tank. this is the exact video I needed to get it done. FKN CHAMP!!! I'm even building the stand after your concept! and at the height I want on top of that!! FKN AMAZING!!! and I'll be using a 3 inch pipe in a corner to house a 3/4 inch Durso standpipe I feel like I know you from the amount of your content I've watched lol. any tips would be fantastic. Peace dude, stay safe Joey!
The advantage is that in a sump, you can customize the size of a filter. Means less maintenance. Also if you have fish or snails that eats live plants,(goldfish, cichlids, etc.) you can add live plants into the sump for more nitrate reducing plants. Also decrease the amount of water change if you are a busy person or you have a huge tank over 100 gallons. You can also hide your heater and thermometer in there. So overall, you can multiply a 3 gallon size canister into a 10-50 gallons.
I do agree with the noise aspect. And I'm not challenging you in any way but I'd be interested to see how you put the return behind the weir, seems it wouldn't really cycle the bulk of the water that way. Great videos, btw. I always enjoy a new video from you. Much appreciated.
Also another great advantage with over planted tank is reduced algae issue. You can buy CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP plants from ebay: The best plants for sumps are lucky bamboo, moneywort, hornwort, java plants, and water lettuce. You can get a ton of them from ebay for 30-50 bucks. the lucky bamboo doesn't do a lot, but it can be added for the mixture like 20%lucky bamboo and 80%hornwort. you can just attatch a clamp lamp for 6-10 bucks and use a cfl bulb. Also you can add a red or blue party cfl bulb.
This was great.... I will never do this myself but it brought insight to me on how overflows work as well as sumps..... I think that you do a great job at demostrating and I look forward to more...
This video is a must even for "pros"... I'm re building my wiers and overflows; watching this video was a great overview as well as a detailed look on a diy system.
hi, i am really enjoying your how to video's. as an avid do it yourselfer i am getting heaps of ideas to make some of your ideas applicable to my circumstances, thanks. is there a "safe" distance to drill the hole from the corner of the tank? i would think that too close to the corner would effect the structural integrity of the glass but to far and your wasting tank space.
very helpful video Joey..... keep it up.... quick question.... am having a problem understanding how to construct a weir that will keep the water level hidden behind the black brace at the top of the tank and also not make the water overflow the top of the tank.... any suggestions on how to accurately accomplish this
excellent video-- thanks Joey what is the advantage of a sump on a freshwater aquarium over a HOB or canister? I just started using canisters this year and I am pretty impresses so far.
The rate that water exits the tank (and enters the sump) must be greater than the rate that water is pumped into the tank (he recommends twice the rate). As long as you don't put too much water in the entire system, the sump would never overflow (unless both the standpipe and the weir leaked). Generally speaking, only the main tank has the potential to overflow. The only time it would overflow is if more water is pumped into the tank than is allowed to exit (drain is plugged for example).
joey, im taking my 90 gallon next friday to get drilled for two 2in bulkheads, im putting mine on the back panel not the bottom, my plan was to just use elbows angled up to adjust my water height, with the back up being the taller of the two, to not let any life get sucked into them i plan to cap them with heavily drilled caps,. my question is, that it seems to take away internal tank space with the way done in this video, do you think my plan will work? or do you prefer this videos way?
Thank you very much, really clear presentation, helped me understand much more about sumps and weirs...I've been researching a lot, but you made it all make perfect sense. Thanks.
why did you put your heater in the bottom tank? i know it circulates but is it better? and is that silicon fish safe. i got a 90 gallon and gonna do a fresh water tank. i like the refugium to keep as a refuge for fish that need to be seperated or babies. i like your setup. im doing alot of research before i get started. any tips would help,, im gonna run two filters. im gonna have one bio wheel filter, and a the marineland caninster 360. can i use that canister filter to circulate my water?
Hi joey, great vid, how do you find acrylic bonds to the glass with silicone? I'm just waiting for some acrylic to arrive so I can make my weir, but after some research I've read not to use acrylic and to only use glass as acrylic will eventually leak, your opinion would be very much appreciated
i like your videos joey good information. one question about your drilling, couldnt you drill the side or back at required height of tank to accomodate maximum drainage to the sump, so you could eradicate the used up space in the tank corner overflow/standpipe?
Hey Joey you mention surface skimming, on my tank I have a hang-on protein skimmer which has a collection cup that needs to be emptied and cleaned, if I plumbed my tank this way would I still use the hang-on or is it not necessary? I could set it in the sump but if I'm not sure if its needed. Thanks for your videos
Thanks for the video! Just what i needed...Im looking forward for the sump/wet dry stuff. Im coming up with a project and all these info will come in handy. Keep it up
do you recomend threaded or slip fit. Who is the manufacturer to order direct. Would there be any benifit putting a 2x4 brace pressing against the glass. to support the hole where your drilling in the glass. Lastly am i correct the sump piped would be the same diameter and style.
hi mate, is there any sort of guid as as fare as with of stand pipe and power needed for the returning bulk head, also instead of the weir would it be possible to use some sort of grill or mesh over the top of the pipe (for large fish) or there to much danger of the pipe getting knocked out?
hi, great videos i love all of them, just a quick suggestion, would an elbow on the top of the standpipe reduce the suction noise, not tried it but maybe you could and let me know as i am tempted to use this or maybe the constant drip replacement for my yellow belly sliders, they are really messy, or maybe you have a better system for turtles. thanks.
I know how you could possible improve on this and reduce the "suction" noise... that pipe in the tank, you cross drill a bunch of smaller holes, cap the upper end, and then fill that triangle space around the pipe with gravel. It would work well I believe!
Hi Joey, I'm one of your newest followers and am really enjoying your videos! My question: HOW WOULD YOU CAP, COVER or FILL DRILLED HOLES IN THE BOTTOM OF A GLASS AQUARIUM?
See the way u said for safety u drilled a bigger than u need in case it gets clogged. Instead of drilling a bigger hole would it be ok to drill a 2nd hole for another drain pipe?
now with how you did this video, the water level doesn't reach the top of tank. What needs to be done to keep the water level closer to the top of the tank so that you don't see the water line like in this video. I'm assuming make the acrylic piece taller
How do you determine what height to set the top of the overflow to in relation to the top of the weir? Do you want it 1 inch below the full water line? 2in? etc. What do you consider for determining this?
Have you ever considered changing your standpipe into a bell siphon? Then you can fill behind the weir with bioballs or some other media and it becomes combined into a biofilter. Those of us who are new to your channel don't know in which video you talked about silencing your standpipe. You have a LOT of videos. More information would be appreciated.
If I've got a 55g tank, it would need ~330gph in order to turn the water 6 times/hour. Do you think I should use a 1" bulkhead for this too? What sort of turnover/power should I try to find for the water pump?
What would you say would be a good flow rate for koi? Still 6x? Or more because they create a lot of waste, if so.. what do you suggest for flow rate turnover?
@uarujoey, thanks for the reply joey, do you have any ideas? do you think instead of caps maybe cutting slits into them like the slits you put on the weir in this vid?
quick question for you joey, if water has to travel all the way on top to go down the pvc pipe then how can I remove fish wastes/food at the bottom of the tank?
I have no idea what you were talking about when you said something about durso standpipe? I'd like to setup me tank like this but I need to know how to silence it. Also, acryllic is pretty expensive where I live, could I create a "weer" out of glass or anything else?
Hi there Joey! I hope you can reply to my message. Is Aquaspeed A6000 enough for my 326 gallons? I really do appreciate your feed back. I'm a big fan of yours.
Hey joey i have deff enjoyed and learned alot watching your vids, have a question regarding plumbing, im doing a 40 gal breeder native tank and going with a 20 long refugium under with a 1in standpipe over flow like in your video but wondering on the return what size bulkhead and pipe to use?
where did you get the hole saw? im trying to find one for an 1/2 bull head and it says you need an 1 1/8 saw is that true? also another one for a 3/4 one too what size do i need if i have a 45G tank? a guy told me 3/4 for the over flow and 1/2 for the return
how do you match the rate of water flowing from the tank into the sump with the rate of the water being pumped from the sump? do they have to be exact? because it seems that it is extremely easy for either a) the sump to overflow if the rate of entrance into the sump is greater than the rate of exit...or b) the pump to run dry if the rates are reversed.
hey joey... i have been looking all over the internet on how to build a turtle tank... the problem im having is there need to be a dry side of the tank... ya'know some where the turtle can climb onto land... do you have any idea on how to achieve this???
Are there limits on how many holes you can drill in the bottom pane, and still have it sufficiently hold the weight of the water and rocks above it? How about limit to hole size in the bottom pane with regard to bottom pane thickness and total gallons of tank?
Just found out my tank are none tempered, my question is by drilling hole in the bottom or side panel, would it make the glass weak once fill with water, im just nervous. Thanks
@uarujoey do you put an air stone in the bottom of the weir to increase circulation? Being that water takes the path of least resistance the bottom of the weir would hold stagnant water??
Where can I buy the bulkheads in the U.S.A. ? My home depots don't really know what it is. Ebay seems a little expensive for what the item is or at least the 1" 1/2" size.
i have a 100 gallon tank also a 20 gallon sump bulkhead 40mm two returns 25mm my question is the return pump is 4000lph is this too small , my return valve is fully open and my overflo is also fully open vecton 600. vmax rating 1900lph... do i need another pump or another vecton
thank you for the quick answer i'm sorry for my english' one more thing, how can I know what size of pipe to take? what if my pump wouldn't pump the water back to the aquarium fast enough? thank you very much! Roei
To solve the noise in my 220g with a 2200 gph pump, I just stick two air lines into both the mouths of the overflow pipes and no noise what so ever. Works well for me lol and its cheap fast and takes 2 mins to adjust them.
Hello! Please could you tell me how could I improve the look of my fish tank? What I want to do is to paint the lid and trims. Mine is black and I just wanted to make it look more modern. Thanks
Hey, I have a question. How much room (cm2) do I need in the overflow section for 2 pipes plus a return pipe. It's for a 200 liters tank with a flow rate of 1000 l per hour. If you can, please tell me the diameter for the intake pipe, safety pipe and the return pipe. I hope thats not too much to ask lol. Thank you
I was just thinking why dont you try making holes on the entire body of acrilic glass,so that the filtration process can happen not only from the top,but from that entire area where the acrilic glass is covering.Once the dirty particles pass trough that holes, then there gonna move upward, and overflow, but if you just make holes on the top,the durt will have time to escape the overflow or only the dirt on the top will be filtered out...
Hi Joey, How does doubling the bulkhead size create a safety factor? I didn't understand your explanation. Do you mean drilling two holes so if one get clogged the other is still working? I'm not really clear on how the safety factor is created by a bigger bulkhead size if that gets clogged too. Thanks in advance I will await your response.
MasterofDisaster Having a drain twice as big as the pipe filling the aquarium with water helps prevent overfilling. Unless you like the idea of having water all over the floor, it's a good idea.
i plan to use a 29 gallon tank as a sump but i dont want to ruin it if i ever wanted to use it as an aquarium is there a way to install baffles without using silicon i heard somewhere you could cut air tube as use it as a seal any help would be great
look at a petstore that sells or does mostly saltwater tanks. they usually have them. I searched 5 local stores and they had nothing, Went to a petstore in Chicago and they had every size.
This is an awesome video. I recently bought a used tank which already has a weir box and everything, but I am not entirely sure I want a sump as I have two Aquaclear70 filters that I want to use, so I've been thinking of removing the weir box instead. Is there anyway I can seal the hole there? it seems pretty impossible.
+M. BK Couldn't you just fill the bulkhead with silicone and then have substrate covering the bulkhead in the tank? With it filled with silicone it basically is just a plug.
Great video, as you mension 10g and 55g are tempered glass, want to drill my tank 150g, im not sure of manufacture, and no sticker on bottom, is there another way to find out for sure if its none tempered, thanks
This is the best educational plumbing video on youtube. Thank you!

By far the most informative vid i've seen

great video im going to do the same to my tank only thing is what can i do to remove the suction noise, could you make a video or something
Hey love your video's! I was wondering if it was worth it to drill a tank because I'm thinking about getting a reef the same size of yours. 33 gallon

can i use any silicone or caulk plus silicone like the brand dap alex plus and can i use this for cracks in the tank too
what type of pump do you recomend.
i have a 100 gallon tank also a 20 gallon sump bulkhead 40mm
two returns 25mm
my question is the return pump is 4000lph is this too small , my return valve is fully open and my overflo is also fully open
vecton 600. vmax rating 1900lph...
do i need another pump or another vecton
hey if it says anywhere on the tank tempered glass, is the whole tank tempered glass??
thank you for the quick answer i'm sorry for my english'
one more thing, how can I know what size of pipe to take? what if my pump wouldn't pump the water back to the aquarium fast enough?
thank you very much! Roei
Can you drill holes at the top of the weir instead of cutting teeth or will there be some sort of ill effect of doing so?
What size pump are you using? Does that matter much? I was thinking more gph the better, but I am new to the overflow and sump genre ☺
Hi Joey
What do u recommend when building glass tanks.
Silicon them on side of bottom panel or top of bottom panel?
To solve the noise in my 220g with a 2200 gph pump, I just stick two air lines into both the mouths of the overflow pipes and no noise what so ever. Works well for me lol and its cheap fast and takes 2 mins to adjust them.
Hi Jacob, is it somewhere in your local hardware store? Like Lowes?
So how is the PVC attached to the Bulkhead? with regular pvc glue?
Hello! Please could you tell me how could I improve the look of my fish tank? What I want to do is to paint the lid and trims. Mine is black and I just wanted to make it look more modern. Thanks
Thank you for your reply, it will be exactly the same as in your vid, a corner weir, thanks again
Where is the second return line comming from is there a splitter in place?
YES FINALLY A NEW VIDEO
hi joey if i look thru polarized lens and see these weird thing on the glass that means it not drill-able?
Hey, I have a question. How much room (cm2) do I need in the overflow section for 2 pipes plus a return pipe. It's for a 200 liters tank with a flow rate of 1000 l per hour. If you can, please tell me the diameter for the intake pipe, safety pipe and the return pipe. I hope thats not too much to ask lol. Thank you
you could just put a piece of filter sponge ontop of the wier or stand pipe to stop anything from being sucked in
Could you cancle out the noise by putting a cap with holes drilled in it on the stand pipe?
If you liked this video, you will LOVE my book: thekingofdiy.com
Great vid bro
Can I do a conner matt filter & a wrier all in one .
I was just thinking why dont you try making holes on the entire body of acrilic glass,so that the filtration process can happen not only from the top,but from that entire area where the acrilic glass is covering.Once the dirty particles pass trough that holes, then there gonna move upward, and overflow, but if you just make holes on the top,the durt will have time to escape the overflow or only the dirt on the top will be filtered out...
did you put a 45 degree bevel on the weir's edge's?
What size is that drilling head? What hold side should drill for a 6x2x2 tank?
nice job on video showing details ..
one thing you no the pipe gose down in to the glass and out the other side what do u use to seal around the bottom of the pipe
I got a 220 salt with overflows it has two holes in each overflow do i need two stand pipes my first sump 40 long thx you
Hi Joey,
How does doubling the bulkhead size create a safety factor? I didn't understand your explanation. Do you mean drilling two holes so if one get clogged the other is still working? I'm not really clear on how the safety factor is created by a bigger bulkhead size if that gets clogged too. Thanks in advance I will await your response.
MasterofDisaster Having a drain twice as big as the pipe filling the aquarium with water helps prevent overfilling. Unless you like the idea of having water all over the floor, it's a good idea.
what kind of pump do use and were do you get it
it's works the same for plywood tank?
i plan to use a 29 gallon tank as a sump but i dont want to ruin it if i ever wanted to use it as an aquarium is there a way to install baffles without using silicon i heard somewhere you could cut air tube as use it as a seal any help would be great

Can you use an acrylic "weer" (not sure how to spell that) on a glass aquarium and just silicone it to the glass?
Joey, How long does it take to cure the silicone? I added a weir to my sump , thanks
915Mang He said it takes around 24 hours for the type of silicone he used to cure. Check the label on any you're thinking about buying.
Close the ball valve, until the stand pipe fills and then slowly open it.. see if that works, let me know!
This is an awesome video. I recently bought a used tank which already has a weir box and everything, but I am not entirely sure I want a sump as I have two Aquaclear70 filters that I want to use, so I've been thinking of removing the weir box instead.
