There’s only one ring included because that’s that one ring you always have during a boss fight that you keep losing and picking up so you don’t die. 😂😂😂
The way they made a mech with a weak point that exposes it's power source is such a *chef's kiss* play feature, I really hope they do more eggman mechs in the future! The only thing that bothers me about this set is that the spikes on the left arm are shown spinning on the box, but when you build it it's clear that that is just not possible, which is odd...
Definitely feel the dome should have been printed like in the original Lego Ideas submission Cubot seems like a simple bonus since they were able to make a roughly accurate build for him with existing parts - the battle droid body gives him a frame that’s inaccurate to how spindly he is in-game, but the parts usage for the head is A+

I was getting suspicious that the dome wouldn’t fully close with Eggman inside, since from what I could tell none of the promotional photos showed that. Thanks for confirming that it does.
Happy to see this is as good as I'd hoped, I would have loved this as a kid, so glad kids today are getting these. Play pattern seems much more ideal for Lego than the Mario stuff, great review Jang!
That's a shame that it comes with regular Sonic instead of Super Sonic, really odd choice there in my opinion. Also the lime green is only slightly off, because there were green energy line things going through that area in Sonic Generations, but it was a daker green than that and, again, they were kinda like fuel lines or something, not big blocks of green like that. And the small yellow robot is also called Cubot (Cause he's shaped like a cube, hardy har lol.) He's usually seen along Orbot (who is, surprise surprise, shaped like an orb) so it's odd they aren't both included.
I would have liked to see a Super Sonic minifigure at some point, but this doesn't seem like the right set for it. You can't fight the Death Egg Robot as Super Sonic in Sonic 2 or Sonic Generations (which is where this design gets more of its inspiration from). It'd only serve as a loose reference to the second Sonic movie, but this set is based on the games, not the films.
I would bet Super Sonic is being saved for specific sets. They want people to anticipate a Super Sonic release and support the sets so a Super Sonic will be released down the road.

I’m also not a huge sonic guy, I’ve only seen the movies (though I really liked them, especially the second one). Still felt interested in picking up this set, it looks great and it’s an easy way to get both the main hero and villain

Do you think swapping the trans black dome with a tan dome would simulate that flesh color on the original mech? I’m pretty that’s available in that color.
Sonic fan here, I think the trans-black dome works so much better to represent the mech from the original Sonic 2. In that game the top dome only had a tiny bit of flesh on the face, the rest was a light gray.
I saw a demonstration of the largest set of this wave with the loop and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the play feature worked and how large the set was.
I like the look of this set and the play features look fun. My only criticism is I wish eggman’s cockpit could detach like in the games. Does this robot specifically not do that in game? I can’t recall
in most depictions, namely sonic 2 where it originated, the cockpit doesn't detach. it's the final boss in that game, so sonic just blows it up entirely.
Normally I don't like it when Sega uses the Death Egg robot over and over again in games (though how it's used in Mania is one exception I do like), but when I saw this, I though this is one I'm going to get. The build feels substantial, which is good since this machine is an endgame boss. Minus the bits mentioned on the dome and the lack of seemingly military-based emblem on the shoulders (doesn't match with any I've seen at the moment) It does look and feel the part. The only nitpick I have is that there are no mini bomber bots (in-game, two of these would eject from the top of the jet pack, if you manage to get behind the robot itself) for it. BUt I do like how they used the launch and shield mechanism to "beat" the cage out of the robot's chassis.
I absiolutely agree - this is a fun set. I paid 49 euros in germany for it and that feels very nice value. The pricing of the sonic sets is very weird, some have a higher us price compared to the euro price and some are lower. I don't think even Lego knows why...
Aah! Good old Sonic! Been a fan for decades of this amazing Hedgehog! The videos games were amazing to play with! And now in Lego form! I want to say I want to get all the Sonic sets from this wave (and I hear there will be another wave coming in 2024 featuring Shadow, Knuckles and Super Sonic, we'll see that later), love the launcher and the Sonic attack, very well done and fun too! Can't wait to get this set, nostalgia factor very high for me!
I looked at the original and the body and legs are very well done. The head is pretty bad. I don't know why they chose a translucent dome instead of building a head. That would have looked better and been more faithful to the source material.
As an old-school Sonic fan... this is kind of lackluster. As a Lego fan... it's not bad. Definitely will be keeping an eye for mocs of it before I make the purchase.
It's so absurd that the original Lego Ideas set featured the Death Egg Robot but somehow they thought it was a good idea to scrap it, only to reintroduce it now but much worse.
I'm a big fan of Sonic and I have the Ideas set already. The Death Egg robot is definitely iconic and it's great to have in LEGO form. The Robotnik here is done better. I wonder if he will fit into the hovercraft thing from the other set. At only $60 this is not bad and definitely managable. I doubt I will use the action feature much, but I'm glad it works well. It's too bad ahout the printing on Sonic's chest, but other than that, this is great!
In terms of the exposed green; It's not really accurate to the specific object this represents, but I'm ok with that because green highlights are a common occurence in eggman's tech, it gives me good e102γ vibes!
I was only going to buy the Tails airplane set, but got this one as well a few days ago. Didn't expect to like it as much as I do now :D No regrets, I really love this one :) Thanks for the review!

Quedtion: if you get a minifigure with such bad printing... can you contact Lego to ask for a new one? Or does that only works with missing pices? Just realy curios sbout that.
I was able to get a replacement for a misaligned print on Rocket Racer’s helmet but I don’t think they’ll replace whole figs, especially when it’s a “correct” bad print
Best set of the line. I'm not fan how they did eggman though. IMO the head should be a seperate piece or Lego head with glasses print and "glasses and mustache addon

This was the one set from the theme I knew I wanted the most when the images were revealed. I got it, and I'm very happy with it

2:57 the lime green is most likely a reference Sonic Generations where the robot had emerald green and black on the underside
Cubot isn't just any Eggman robot (or badnik as they're known officially), he's one of Eggman's goons who he keeps by his side at all times
the lime green on the death egg robot is there because the death egg robot featured in sonic generations has greeen techy detailing in those places

I guess I was thinking more of Sonic Generations’ version which had a bit more of flesh color to it. Definitely something that could be modded though.

The eggman mech in the green hill zone loop set detatches between the legs and the cockpit
I kinda wish I could get this without the Sonic launching pad thing. It’s a nice play feature though, which is good.
My kid's gonna love this. He's 4 and loves the Netflix series, Sonic boom. Which has episodes where Dr.Eggman uses this robot
Cool as this is, I still prefer the original Sonic minifigure. The eyes are way too big on the new one, and I don't like the lighter shade of blue.

If any parent is reading and wants an even cheaper set that has the speed cube action feature, the 76990 set is almost half the price as this set.

Lifelong Sonic fan, love this set, and I agree that Sonic Team probably took some cues from Zeon back in '92.

Not a fan of this overall theme, but this set and the Tornado look great. Not a fan of the dome piece though, looks off compared to the games.
