The issue with the idea of round from the front , is too many riders pull from the front and think round happens from the front, instead of pushing forward and up through the horses core from the hind. The inverted way the horse travels also causes the horse especially with a weak spine to aggrevate or create kissing spine. I don't see being round as starting with the headset, but rather using it's core and lifing the back, which then will naturally encourage the horse to also look round in the neck head area. I see a lot of horses rounded in the neck and head but hollow in the core which is riding from the front instead of back to front.

It was so helpful to see you riding incorrectly and your horse not on the bit and then see how you are able to change it while explaining what you're doing. I could recognize myself and my horse in the incorrect phases and now I try to fix these problems. I watch you every day before my ride and try to mimic your position on my horse. You are more helpful to me than any lesson I ever had, and believe me, I have had MANY! Thank you, Amelia!

I can't tell you how much this video comforted me as an AA coming back to riding after almost 10 years. The realization that the horse's position can affect rider position as well as the other way around was something I really needed to hear. Obviously my seat's not what it was but it's hard to improve it when my horse is hollow and all over the place! Working on topline is tough but it's an investment in my development as well as my horse's.
There is SO much terminology when it comes to riding! As a new and senior rider, stopping to look up what each means can interrupt the learning process of this very visual learner 😊. Thank you for putting it all together in this video. Also, explaining how roundness is safer and easier to sit makes sense and has me highly motivated to master this skill. For me right now, information is easier to digest when I can visually process it from my seat in the living room as opposed to the back of the horse. Thank you!

Round is in the whole body not just in the neck. You will know when your horse is round his back will lift and you'll feel it. Your legs will open up at the thighs and lift you like riding a wave. If that doesn't happen your horse isn't round.
Your ROUND video was perfect. Thank you for such a lucid and concise video on the round concept. I'm currently working on this with my OTTB that loves to stretch out his neck, I guess the preferred method of going in the racing industry.

Thankyou Amelia for this amazing video. Why amazing ? ……it covers all aspects in detail with examples of how to correct problems and great use of the camera placed on the hat. Coaching points inspires you to work on challenging areas and not rush but wait until the horse is collected.
At the beginners area, all the horses have their heads up and their necks straight. Whereas at the advanced riders arena, all of the horses heads are towards their chest, with rounded necks. I used to think the diffence was good quality and bad quality horses. But then I realised it was because the beginners wouldn't know how to round the horse and put the horse on the bit. 😅 big difference..
Rounding also distributes their weight to their hind end instead of on their forelegs which takes the stress off their four legs making them last longer
the drone view/helmet cam is super helpful, would love to see that in more vids. do you have tips for telling when the horse is too round/behind the bit? also, just wanted to say thanks for making these videos. I just found your channel recently and it is helping me stay motivated and inspired through health challenges for myself and my horse.
very good video. I'm struggling with getting my horse to push into the bridle (not grab bit and run) as he still has his nose above the vertical. He is bracey so I'm working through transitions and introduced the whip to tickle him behind to get him off his forehand which is helping keep him lighter in my hands.
Hi Amelia! I love your video on why round. I understand everything that you said , my problem is that I’ve been unable to get there with my gelding. I’m an a mature rider and got Sam when he was only 3. We learned together with wonderful trainers along the way. He knows how to collect but in my opinion, just not for me. He’s a really good boy and he’s very attached to me. I don’t know if I should try a different bit, he seems happy in everything. He’s a 2011 APHA that is willing and well trained. I know it’s me!!! The horse I'm on now carries himself pretty well on his own so I'm not doing much work on roundness right now, but boy does he let me know if I do something he doesn't like. He gives me the giraffe neck with pinned ears when I try to canter without letting him canter. He's like excuse me, wtf. It feels awful. I can't imagine riding around inverted like that all the time. This was a good reminder to make sure he's round before I work on my sitting trot though! Makes such a difference for me and for him.

Just found out why sitting trot is so hard in my lesson. And she heads for the cavaletti at will. Not round. Horse is so hollow and above the bit. Must be so uncomfortable for her. Hard for me too 😳
I’m getting a new horse and never had done dressage. She is a young horse we are starting her training young mostly getting her used to us..how do you start on a completely new horse to make sure they are round and supple not just the neck but all over using their back legs accordingly to dressage as well not just a round neck

It’s a little bit an optical illusion, I’m not continuously adding leg, my leg is moving with his movement. But you do need your horse going and moving forward to be correctly round!

I ride in a side pull bitless bridle. Any tips for contact and roundness? My boy is new to dressage.

It seems you are having to continue to use your leg to keep him going? I have to constantly push my horse forward.
