I saw this episode when I was a kid, probably 15 years or so after it was made. Even though I hardly cared about feminism and knew it was an old show I still couldn't believe the way it ended. The worst part for me was that when everyone was criticizing Betty and making fun of her for wanting to be an engineer her own parents wouldn't stick up for her, but took the side of that stuffy boyfriend they hardly knew.

Have you ever met a happy feminist? Me neither. And they make everyone around them miserable. Betty is very happy at the end to have a handsome real man taking her out on a romantic date.

I fucking hate this episode because Jim and Margaret won’t take her side that boy harassed her because of breaking tradition and at the end she try’s to “impress” him by wearing a dress

Unfortunately, that was the prevailing thinking of those times. However, today is a different world and there are so many opportunities for women. It's much better today than back then in this regard.

Good thing I didn’t treat my daughter this way when she wanted to b an engineer. She’s now been an Electrical Engineer for years now and making more money than Bettys father did🥴

Ironically, just a few years later on 'The Andy Griffith Show', Elinor Donahue played a woman who decides to run for town council and is ridiculed for wanting a ''man's job', but the ending is very different--she gets elected.

Yean, you've come a long way baby - huge legions of unhappy, childless, manless feminists, abortion, drug addiction, suicides - feminism is one of THE worst creations of Satan.

I find it strange that Bettys mother is taken aback when she is called “nice and motherly”. She doesn’t seem to like that, yet this episode is suggesting motherly should be the ideal of the housewife? Another reason the bomb at the ending is so jarring.

I don’t see what’s wrong with working for a living? Here is disappointing: 1968: a classic jury: the seven men included a sales representative, two managers, a schoolmaster, a photographer, a civil servant, and a wood machinist. Of the five women, two had no occupation (were presumably housewives) one was a shop assistant, one a domestic help, and one a toilet attendant.” THAT IS DEPRESSING.

This episode was just on tv and it made me SO MAD I had to look it up here so I could bitch about it. lol Betty was so insistent on being an engineer until the arrogant college boy said he wanted a pretty stay at home wife to come home to every day. So she quickly changes in to a dress and acts coy and stupid. JFC.

The arrogant college boy was right. A woman's place is truly in the home. That's the was the Good Lord intended it. One of the reason we have so much upheaval in the world today is due to our rebellion against this divine precept. Part of the reason why we men strive to build bridges, and dredge about in the dirt all day is so we can return to our intended tillers of the home fire--woman.

Ah yes! Housewives groveling to their lords and masters until the day they die or dump them because they're not submissive enough and wifey suddenly realizes she has little education or job experience and is on her own. Sorry, but marriage should be for two equal adults.

Oh my goodness! This show is so terrible. If my daughter wanted to be a doctor or a nurse or anything else. I would support her in any career she wanted to do. Now I have been thinking about this episode. Of course Betty could be an highly respected Engineer. Times were different back then. And Betty 's Mom
Margaret said you could be nice and motherly. Even Jim her Dad didn't take her side. That is definitely one sided. And every time Betty mentioned Engineer she get shot down. So when she signed up for the class she used her initial's B.J. Anderson. And her friend signed up for a typing ( Secretarly work) I believe her Name is Dot. Even the instructor was fooled..
      Why to go B.J. Anderson!!
