Dragons Flood Floatation Device With Offers | Dragons’ Den

- James Halliburton pitches his Waterbuoy idea, a key-fob fitted with an automatically inflating balloon to keep keys afloat when they fall into the water. James is seeking an investment of £100,000 in return for 10% of his company, Seatriever International, but will it pass the Theo Paphitis test?
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Just did some reading up on this, and Haliburton renegged on his agreement and gentleman's handshake and decided to go it alone without the Dragons. Looking at his website, it appears he never reached the big time.
Tbh this is ridiculous. The amount of time it took for the balloon to deploy with the 1KG weight was far too long. If that was in real water the weight would have floated way deeper than shown in the tank and the balloon would not be able to cope with the pressure and rise the weight back up. Surprised the dragons didn’t catch this
Not much to back this up but look at how long it took for the keys balloon to inflate, it was much less time. I think they deliberately edited the section with the 1kg weight to make it longer and therefore more tense for TV viewing.
“Surprised the dragons didn’t catch this” says the person who didn’t catch that it’s edited for TV 🤣

And then they upload a video that has been on UA-cam for over 10 years
I felt this big time.
The dragons are not asking the right questions! To what depth is this functional? Has he tried it in deep water (deep sea)? The 1 kg is already struggling at 0.5 m, there's no way it's going to be able to lift that weight at 10 m.
These pitches last for hours, this video is only 12 minutes.
@@BenjaminGoose They would've been included had they been asked
Wrong
Good Question Ellen - something the Dragons missed !
Not only that but the claim it can 'lift 1kg' is a bit deceptive. In water, 1kg of lead will need a bigger balloon than 1kg of say, waterproofed brick because of the water each object displaced itself. Also, your depth question is bang on. If the keys fall to 10M, then (any scuba diver will tell you), the pressure is 2ATM so the balloon volume (and therefore the lift) will be halved. 5 Dragons and not a physics GCSE between them !
Ben, they don't last for hours, but they do last for over an hour.
WHAT HAPPENED!!! -
At first James Halliburton accepted the Dragon's investment of £200,000 for his Waterbuoy key-ring - a device which was designed to prevent valuables from sinking. However, after some consideration he ditched Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis, claiming that he wanted to go it alone.
The reality is a little more complicated: whilst testing balloons with LEDs, Halliburton's neighbour's children started playing with the illuminated balloons. He quickly realised that there was a wider market for the strengthened balloons, and decided that he could do without the two millionaires hanging to his coat tails. Having cut them loose he launched the Illoom Balloon, designed for use at children's parties, which sold an incredible 5 million units in under a year.
Thank you.

Every boat ignition key I've seen has always been attached to a small oblong piece of foam that floats.
meheh what about a bunch, this lifts weight and can be attached to other items of value you may knock in the water
@@sdstim I've been on board boats since I was 6 months old; nobody would ever buy this garbage. Car keys are stowed in the chart desk when the boat is moving, and ignition keys have foam floats. In the harbor, a diver can be called over to retrieve sunk items for 20 bucks, which is actually preferable since if it floats or is semi-bouyant, there is no telling where it ends up. At varying depths the flotation will not carry the item higher, and ocean currents will whisk the item away at 3-5 kts, whereas sunk items generally will stay put near where they fell in.

This is a big international company now, and in the end he didnt go through with the investment. Good man.
Oh yes we have all got Boats. Lol. HA HA
This was obviously in the pre-fetish examination of patent era.
I'm guessing the volume of the 1kg box is just a little less than 1 l (dm3), hence the upward force due to the displacement of (the volume of) water would be very close to the force required to make the box float on itself. So it just needs a little force to make it surface. Had it been a small volume of 1kg (e.g. a lead weight) it would not have surfaced.
Boring...
So what would be the maximum weight if it was a small shape like a lead weight? ;)
Question1: I'm on a boat... got my keys in my pocket... Someone splash water on me, throw a glass of water at me, I spill my beer... does that thing gonna inflate and rip my shorts !???
Question2: Does that thing work only once ? I mean, if I'm that distracted or careless to the point of dropping my keys in the ocean... this could surely happen twice in the same trip. Can it be reset ? Or I'll have to buy/use another one ?
"So for those reasons, I'm out." -Said the keys before jumping out of the boat !
The first thing I thought was this would be handy if my keys or phone fell down the loo! LOL. Limiting it to the boating community is a small market.
