Back in the 90’s, in LA, we had a show called Friday Night Flavas and you can still listen to old recordings here on YT. Anyway, Kurupt always came through and freestyled along with other notables like Canibus, Eminem, DMX, WU, etc. Nobody wanted to battle Kurupt. Feared!
Met Rakim in New York 42nd & 8th Ave 3 in the morning around the year 1995. What a humble brother. Rahim actually gave his autograph. He had a crowd lined up to shake his hand and he obliged. My personal memories when I encountered Rakim.
In 1988, for my 18th birthday, I asked my parents for the "Follow the Leader" album by Eric B & Rakim. Initially they refused to accept such a request, as they felt it was a "too small gift" for such an important date. Also, as we lived in Sweden at the time and didn't have much money, none of them understood how rap could even be called music. I refused to accept ANY other suggestion from them as the central gift for my day and explained I would rather be completely without a gift at all, than to get something I didn't want to receive. After many discussions around the topic they gave in and I got that magical album. Today, when I am soon to turn 54, I still have the very same album on vinyl in perfect condition. With the passage of time my parents eventually understood, to a 100%, the importance of this music to me and the importance of legends like Rakim that with their music touched the hearts of so many people in that magical era. It's amazing Rakim still keeps creating music that gives me goose bumps when I hear his mellow voice and bars. When you know quality, you simply know quality! Keep it up, Rakim! We're still following the Leader!
