I am an Israeli and I grew up with Iranians. We all moved to Canada at the same time in the late 80s as children. We were inseparable. I remember their mothers telling me about what the regime did to them and why they fled Iran. They are still my brothers. All successful, intelligent young men today. I think this is a huge miscalculation by Trump. Dragging the war on Ukraine is very much on America's and western interests. Financing Ukraine is much cheaper than the costs of war for Russia. I was America's president I'd try and make this war last 10 years.
Its disgusting from a moral point of view, but from a realpolitik point of view, america would win by prolonging the war because most of the aid are actually loans that will be paid back with interests.
