The very late Zephyr #6 in Fort Morgan on 21SEPT2024

- This California Zephyr #6 arrived in Fort Morgan at 1328 MDT (17 hrs. and 26 min. late due to a derailment near Reno on top of a 4-hour late departure from Emeryville. P42s #201 & #18 powered the 9-car train to a stop with all but the baggage and dorm/transition/sleeper/office car in reverse order. Car 4 was the active car for passenger service to 6 new passengers. There was a passenger who decided to detrain from car 3 and walk to the north side of the depot and almost missed the train. Although he did pick up the step he launched from car 3, the car door was still wide open. After two false starts, the #6 Zephyr finally departed Fort Morgan for its next stop at McCook, NE on its run to Chicago.
Tonight's #6 Zephyr is running over 4 hours late, but I doubt I will cover it.
The 9th car is a diner running empty headed for rework.

Good afternoon, Gerald; Thanks for dropping by and the comments. I think they just switched the power and the first two cars on that train. If I remember correctly, this consist was really late into Emeryville. The extra diner is on the way to Beech Grove for overhaul, I think.

Hi again, Mark; That i part of single-track operations out there. It could have been worse, but Hulcher and a couple contractors are darn good at cleanup and restoring service out there. I have no clue about that crew. I think there were several from the extra board working that train. The white clouds in the video are the incoming storm. We won't see rain until after 2200 now if at all.

The OBS crew of this train was screwed going west, and is now screwed coming east. If I was working this run I’d mark off next trip! 😂 PS. I would’ve gave that dude a Major tongue lashing!

Bottom line - The passenger that took the liberty to open door and toss out the step, could've led to a major disaster - trip, fall with major injuries. Well, you know what they say - You can't fix stupid (But you can sedate it) 🤣

I think he had some legal marijuana that needed to be used prior to going across the state lines. That's supposition on my part.

Yikes! Where to begin? Almost as suspenseful as that wheelchair user you and several others had to rescue from being stuck in the tracks a few days ago when #5 was several hours late. Lots of action in FMG recently!.......I haven't seen anyone ask this yet in the comments so I'll do so here. And that is: Is this the latest delayed arrival you've ever seen for #6? I've seen a few early morning #6's that you've captured, but this is the first time I've seen it's arrival in the early afternoon! 17.5 hours late must be close to a record, though as we all know, they can't control what happens in front of them and are at the mercy of BNSF and UP traffic, or in this case a derailment.........Have a good rest of your day Mike. It's certainly been a busy one for you so far.
Good afternoon, Timothy; I thank you for stopping by as well as the comments. I'd rather have a drama of an extra car of the private type with the Zephyrs that what I've seen over the past week. LOL! There have been longer delays that I have covered here. A couple come to mind that were 27 and 24 hours delayed. Same thing. Freight trains that went to ground. This was one of the longer delays though. Sadly, the freight railroads that host the Zephyr and other passenger trains force them into the sidings as they run much longer trains than the siding can hold. Oh well. I have ridden on a couple of trains that went thru that. I enjoyed it but the train staff didn't.

Hi Carolyn; This train was 4 hours late departing Emeryville and then was behind a derailment just east of Reno. Took a while to clean that one up. I think the operating crew is from the Extra Board. Don't know when or if they will operate back to Denver. My drama glands are about drained for this week. LOL! Tomorrows #5 will have 10 cars with the last two being private cars from Patrick Henry Creative Promotions. They have been thru here many times.
That engineer was working a very over staffed train if there were 60 in the crew. Six, maybe but sixty, I don't think so.

Yeah good morning Mike thanks for covering eastbound extremely late number six yesterday. Yeah that was kind of silly I looked at that yellow step stool. It looked like it was half on the platform and half on the road bed. Well that's good they got their step back. That guy probably should not have left the train. You know I get nervous when that happens because I don't want to be left behind. But yeah the step would probably lay there and then whoever comes back West would have to pick it up. You know they don't want to lose their step.

Coaches toward the front & sleepers to the rear - like in the old days! Too bad they couldn't have added an R.P.O. to the consist! To go with the nostalgia, how about opening up the throttle to some CB&Q Zephyr speeds on the prairie to make up some time?
God morning, Pete; Thank for dialing in and the comments. I would have liked to have seen a working RPO. That might help with the current mail delivery system. As for making up time, I'll ride today's equipment for the comfort. Rode the CB&Q from here to Lincoln, NE a lot. The time was actually longer then than now with the same stops.
Oh well. The march of "civilization".

Yeah. The wind is still ripping up here and the clouds are slowly moving in. May get some moisture overnight. The temperature is to drop and only a high of 54 F. tomorrow. I'll try to divert some of the temperature and moisture your way. 😂👋👍👍
