    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  Рік тому +3

      Ground heave is caused by the ground basically wanting to fill the hole in. Gravity pushes down on the surface surrounding the box which causes the ground to want to push back up into the void.

      @@Rail_Focus it’s currently under construction in the Central Valley, only 119 are under active construction, with the initial operating segment (171 miles) under pre construction (testing soil, utility relocations, etc). The tunnels that connect the Central Valley to the LA basin have not even finalized where they will go…. The San Francisco part of the project is doing alright and Caltrain is almost complete with their electrification project. La is currently working on upgrading their Union Station as well to support thru-running. But we’re nowhere near as much progress as you guys have gotten. Full operation of San Francisco to LA is expected to be competed by 2033 (I doubt that will happen), and the initial operating segment or begin in 2029 (that seems like it might actually happen tbh). The big challenge is getting those tunnels started between Palmdale and Burbank, as well as Bakersfield to Palmdale which goes through Tehachapi and includes a shorter tunnel

    This explains Old Oak Commons HS2 station along with schematics of the HS2 routings much better than I've seen before. The HS2 routes are not as might be predicted from the depiction of the HS2 track alignments. Manchester HS2 trains are not going through Crewe as the HS2 track alignment would predict. Maybe this is a logic schematic, but the schematic doesn't show an in-line HS2 route between Manchester and Crewe. Now these have been canceled, but understanding the routing is still needed to understand the workings of the overall project as proposed.
    Except for when HS2 trackage extends north of Binghamton there is no connection of HS2 train set equipment on to the GWML. That would mean it is not possible to use a train from Crewe or Manchester that would use the fast HS2 trackage from Binghamton to London. What ever the ridership numbers are this would still leave a significant number of non commuter passenger trains on the GWML where the intent of HS2 was to greatly reduce those trains by placing them on HS2.
    Typical HSR passenger cars are of wider loading gauge than UK rail passenger cars. The expectation is that with a new railway for HSR it would be made at what would be typical HSR loading gauge. Most off main line handling tracks could be made to accommodate these cars relatively easily, but they would they would not fit for standard UK loading gauge. Some of the very restrained routing HSR passenger cars in the very distance future on GWML might be because it would require refitting the GWML for a larger loading gauge.
    I heard people refer to the Binghamton - Old Oak Commons HS2 route without other connection in a derogatory tone as a shuttle, but with no in-between stops that is actually what it is. If the HS2 train sets terminate at Binghamton as shown in this routing diagram then in order to go further one would have to transfer trains. There are track platforms at the Binghamton station being constructed that appear to not be through tracks that terminate at the platform. Surprisingly the HS2 routing diagram doesn't show a HS2 train sets being able to proceed further north then Binghamton on the GWML while HS2 track was being constructed.

      Euston is so far behind now it probably won't be ready until the middle of the 2030s.

      @@Rail_Focus I'm aware of the complexity - maybe that should have dictated a different solution - but 10 years is a very long time to complete an infrastructure project already commenced.

      @@barrieshepherd7694 I'm not sure if more money would help, it's already incredibly expensive, and I'm saying that as someone that supports HS2. But you're right 10 years does seem like a long time.
      The station building should go up relatively quickly, but I think the approach is incredibly complex, made even more so by the over site development and having to rebuild Hampstead Road, which could take 18 months to 2 years, before they can even start excavating the box.
      Then there's the huge cavern on the approach and the approach tunnels which have to be excavated using excavators, which is a painfully slow process..
