മൂസത് എന്ന് തന്നെയാണ്, മൂസ് അല്ല,വയസ്ക്കര ആര്യന്‍ നാരായണന്‍ മൂസ്സത് (1841-1902) ഇദ്ദേഹം 1017 വൃശ്ചികത്തില്‍ പ്രശസ്ത അഷ്ടവൈദ്യകുടുംബമായ കോട്ടയത്തെ വയസ്ക്കരഇല്ലത്ത് (പണ്ട് വയല്‍ക്കര അഥവാ വയക്കര എന്നായിരുന്നു ഇല്ലപ്പേര് എന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു) നാരായണന്‍ മൂസ്സതിന്റെ പുത്രനായി ഭൂജാതനായി. കുട്ടഞ്ചേരി മൂസ്സതിന്റെ പുത്രിയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാതാവ്. തന്റെ മുത്തശ്ശന്റെ പേരായ ‘ശങ്കരന്‍‘ എന്നുതന്നെയായിരുന്നു ആട്ടകഥാകാരന്റേയും യഥാര്‍ദ്ധനാമം. എന്നാല്‍ ചെറുപ്പത്തിലേതന്നെ കുടുംബത്തിലെ കാരണവര്‍സ്ഥാനം ഏറ്റെടുക്കേണ്ടിവന്നതിനാല്‍ ഇല്ലത്തെ മാറാപ്പേരായ ‘ആര്യന്‍ നാരായണന്‍’ എന്ന നാമധേയം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ആ പേരില്‍ പ്രശസ്തനായി തീരുകയുമാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്. മണര്‍കാട് അച്ചുതവാര്യരാണ് കവിയുടെ പ്രഥമഗുരുനാഥന്‍. തുടര്‍ന്ന് പിതാവില്‍ നിന്നും ‘കുമാരസംഭവം’ കാവ്യം ഒന്നാംസര്‍ഗ്ഗം പഠിച്ച മൂസ്സത്, പിതൃനിര്‍ദ്ദേശാനുസ്സരണം ബാക്കിയെല്ലാം സ്വയമായി പഠിക്കുകയായിരുന്നുവത്രെ. വയസ്ക്കര മൂസ്സത് തര്‍ക്കം, വേദാന്തം, ശില്പം, പ്രാകൃതം എന്നിവയിലെല്ലാം അഗാധപാണ്ഡിത്യം നേടിയെടുത്തിരുന്നു. പാരമ്പര്യമായ വൈദ്യപ്രയോഗത്തിലും വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും അദ്ദേഹം അഗ്രഗണ്യനുമായിരുന്നു. നാരായണന്‍ മൂസ്സത് 1077 മീനത്തില്‍ കഥാവശേഷനായി.
