From the earliest days of Christianity some 2,000 years ago, many pilgrims have visited the location where according to the New Testament and traditions, Jesus was baptized by Jhon the Baptist himself
For centuries, Pilgrims have yearned to immerse themselves in the very same water and location to commemorate this event.
Qasr al-Yahud - "The tower of the Jews" is the official name of a baptism site in the Jordan River Valley in the West Bank. After the Six-Day War in 1967, it has been placed under Israeli rules, and the site and facilities are administered by the Israeli Civil Administration and the Israeli Ministry of Tourism as part of a national park.
It is the western part of the traditional site of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17), in Arabic Al-Maghtas, a name which was historically used for the pilgrimage site on both sides of the river. It is also traditionally considered to be the place where the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, and the prophet Elijah ascended to heaven.
In order to improve the spiritual experience and physical comfort of pilgrims, the baptism site on the Jordan River, known as Qasr al-Yahud, is open to the public, free of charge, 7 days a week.
The Israeli Ministry of Tourism has invested close to $2.3 million in renovating and upgrading the historical site. This includes the construction of brand new wooden ramps into the Jordan River to allow many pilgrims easy and comfortable access to the waters for baptism, erecting shaded areas for mass and prayer sessions, restrooms, showers, and also parking facilities. The site is also fully wheelchair accessible.
As we celebrate again the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ
we remember that through these saving acts we have died and been
buried with him in baptism, so that we might rise with him to a new life
within the family of his Church.
We now meet to renew the promises made at our baptism, to affirm our
allegiance to Christ and our rejection of all that is evil.
On other occasions the minister says
In our baptism, we died with Christ and were buried with him so that we
might rise with him to a new life within the family of his Church.
We now meet to renew the promises made at our baptism, to affirm our
allegiance to Christ and our rejection of all that is evil.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered licensed tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
