I miss my bass clarinet. I'm gonna go cry now. I played bass clarinet a lot of my life (I'm 18). Now I'm in college, and I have no time or money to go a buy one. I miss it so much... I have a Clarinet, but it's not the same.
Megan Maize odds are, your college has a music program which can lend you one if you play in the band or orchestra there! My university (Rowan University) has an $11k top of the line buffet bass clarinet which the clarinet students use in wind ensemble and orchestra.
It's about 5 years since I've had my bass, I love my trumpets and saxes, but theres a reason I'm almost done saving for a Kessler bass. I'd love to have a buffet again, but to even hold a decent bass again.....
My BFF played Bass Clarinet all through high school, but could never afford one of her own. So when she ended up going to music school, she would use a Clarinet on loan from the school, but as far as I know, she hasn't been able to reunite with her original instrument yet. So I understand the feeling.
Forget the Nutcracker, this is just a brilliant summation of how to practice for ensemble work. You touch on a ton of good points - everything we should know, but frequently forget. Thanks for this!
I'm a bassoonist by trade but a bass clarinet doubler for pit shows. I have to say that these excerpts that go along with the bassoon... The bassoon part is easy af but when I tried playing the bass clarinet part just out of curiosity, it is SO much harder. And I've been playing clarinet longer than bassoon!!
I remember stumbling across your channel in my 6th grade year of middle school and this was one of the first videos I ran across and I remember thinking I would never be able to play this kind of stuff but now here I am and everything on this video is actually a part of my audition material for college band. This video has been extremely helpful and will hopefully be my saving grace for my audition.
Wow. You're observant! It lets the A resonate through the horn a different way. Throat tones can sound tinny (and very nasal) sometimes, and by resonating them with lower keys that don't change the pitch they make those notes fill out more.
Sir, you are like the best teacher on UA-cam - thank you for giving me more insights into this piece as I play it for the 24587634872634th time.... :-D
so i break some rules... in the trepak, specifically the C# in the third bar after B (in the drapkin book) i play down an octave. Its what the basses and the bassoons do so why not? whatre your thoughts? would you dare to do that in an audition? i figure its not written that low because back the the bass clarinet was assumed to have the same written range as the Bb clarinet.. idk
I swear I never thought I would see the best Bass Clarinet player in the world being asked if he thought he was good at Bass Clarinet haha. I have seen plenty of of live music and there have only been to 2 concerts that I have seen that are in a world of their own: first one being Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and the second being you. So if you won't say it, I will. You're well beyond just being good hahaha.
I have a question. so when I Practice on my Bass Clarinet I like the sound I get. But when I hear a recording of me playing I dont like it so much. Is it me or the recording. PS: I've been recording on my phone
+Nintendo Vid It could be a number of things: it could be where you're putting the phone to record yourself, it could be the phone itself (they're not great recording devices), or it could be the room you're in. Or...it could be that you actually sound like crap and didn't realize it. (kidding)
Great and in-depth job, Michael, as always! Bravo. Would be excited to meet after this busy season in our shtetl Brooklynsk. *****,you can't do in today's bass clarinet world without your bcl books!
***** Hello, I am a student bass clarinet player and I really want your books but I have no idea where to get them, could you tell me where they are available, thanks.
Michael Drapkin! It's an honor to see you on this video. I currently own a copy of your Symphonic Excerpts for Bass Clarinet. I was wondering why you chose not to transpose parts. Musical integrity? Regardless, the excerpts you chose are wonderful and challenging.
Yes, yes it is. I'd never heard the word 'Trepak' until I purchased a super-cheap cassette that had both the English and Latin-alphabet Russian titles printed on it. This after 3 years of ballet and 4 years of school band, both of which involved Nutcracker excerpts every Christmastime.
I have an audition with 3 pieces from this tomorrow. I picked up dance of the sugar plum fairy easily and I dont remember what the other thing is, but it's an easy 8th note base line. However, trepak is HARD! I got most of it, but there is that one bar with only 16th notes before the kind of repeat thing and the notes are so confusing. I cant really get that measure above 90bpm... Even then it's not real even. I've tried slowing it down, but it hasn't seemed to do much. I got the eighth note 2 sixteenth note things, but the measure with only 16th notes I have been having trouble with and my audition is tomorrow... I'll keep trying, but that measure is so confusing going from the b to the c sharp to the e flat to the e to the f sharp to the f to the f sharp to the g to the g sharp. My fingers kind of spaz out and I generally miss the e flat or just go straight to the g sharp when playing fast and I don't know what to do to fix it... this isnt any huge audition and I'll get into something either way, but I would like to do better to get into a more prestigious group...
Bless this video - I recently purchased a new bass clarinet with a low C extension, and I'm quite excited that I get to play it in my orchestra and band. One problem, though: The lowest right hand keys (below F#/C#) don't work. F/C Key turns into a foggy F#/C#, and E/B - Low C is a squeak. How do I fix this?
lol...your line @ 0.22 - 0.26. I actually was introduced to the BC on a cut by Rodney Franklin entitled "Felix Leo" from the 1980 LP "You'll Never Know". Ray Pizzi had a solo and did a fabulous job. It adds that certain "mystery" to the cut. Up til then, like you said, I wouldn't have known what a BC was, lol.
I just started playing the bass clarinet last year and I'm still having problems with that airy sound and it's really fuzzy. How do you get rid of that?
try a thicker and wetter reed. if that doesn't work, try more mouthpiece. That doesn't work, change tongue position. more air is another way worth trying. if it's only airy on middle G to Bb, put your right hand down on those notes. Do with your right hand what you normally do with your right hand on F.
I have a bass clarinet that only goes down to the low Eb can I purchase an extender that let me go down to the low C? Or what I have to purchase the new clarinet?
Buffet recently started making a model with a removable C extension, but without the keywork on the body to trigger it, you’re stuck having to buy a low C horn. Sorry.
I’m first-seat bass clarinet in my 8th grade band. I really enjoy playing it, and I’m quite good if I do say, but I’m getting kinda bored with the music we get because we are seen as non-essential instruments. Looking for some cool songs for bass clarinet, besides the nutcracker, so, any thoughts lads?
I'm playing this BUT with clarinet because we don't have bass clarinet... we are going to have one THREE DAYS before the concert and I'm trying to practice with it then, but if it don't go well I have to play with clarinet..
What bass clarinets do recommend,I'm a student and I have played in all state band twice and I have made all county every year since 6th grade and very conductor has recommended me to get a high quality bass clarinet what should I get
Michael, I thoroughly enjoy all your UA-cam lesson videos. I'm only beginning on Bass Clarinet, but have played tenor sax in 2 concert bands for nearly 10 years. Do you have an Internet source for those excerpts that you play in your UA-cam lessons? I'd like to get some and start working with them.
Could you do a video over etude No. 36 of Artistic Studies from the French School? It's an incredibly fun piece that is part of the material for this year's TMEA All State auditions. Thank you!
In December, our band saw the Chigago Symphony orchestra while in town for the Midwest clinic and Lawrie Bloom played the sugar plum fairy excerpt quite oddly, he stretched out the sixteenth notes, he sort of went-if this makes sense on the internet- daaaaa daaa daa da daaa(quarter). He basically put a eighth rit. on the first three sixteenth notes then played the 4th in tempo. I personally don't care for this style but I was wondering what you think of it.
Often these musical decisions are made by the conductor, not the player. So don't necessarily assume Lawrie *agreed* with that interpretation. He may have been told to play it that way.

That's all any of us can do. Am I "good" at it? That's not for me to say. Do I get a lot of enjoyment from it? Yep. Am I satisfied? Never. :)
This is so late sorry about that. I used to have trouble playing anything over high C (thumb and register key). I have a size 3 synthetic reed and it works really well so you don't have to stress about how wet your reed is. Another thing, it helps of you have a loose embouchure. Above me they stated that keeping it tight helps, so I guess it's different for everyone. There are many different exercises that can help you with doing high notes. Hope this helped :)
okay so this song had my first solo I ever did, and I ended up freaking out and I didn't even play the second set of notes 😐😐😐 I still cringe to this day

When I asked her why she was quitting and why she didn't just choose a different instrument she said it was because she thought that's what I wanted.
