@@barryrathbone It is called a 'Go-Around', where they abandon the landing attempt by taking-off and going back to the landing glide path to try again.
Same here mate, on a Ryanair flight today. First attempt abandoned, the second one was the good one. Imagine for a person who suffers from air sickness (me) these situation make myself regret getting on a plane. Glad we made it today 🙂
@@barryrathbone"TO/GA" is the engine setting on Boeing aircraft, only. It stands for "Take Off/Go Around" as those are generally the only times when full power is used on a plane engine. These pilots are awesome. I have been on a flight years ago into Manchester in a storm and even though was terrifying, the pilot and co pilot managed to land with a massive round of applause and appreciation. These pilots are second to none❤
@@allanfinch5090 the last time I flew, was with Ryan Air, limoges to Stansted, in the same conditions, sideways. I've never flown again, I'm fine driving and using ferries as needed.
I was on a Ryanair flight today trying to land at Stansted. I almost puked, we aborted the first landing when we were almost on the track, with the plane sliding vigorously on the side and vertically. Those 20 minutes were awful. The pilot made it at the second attempt, incredible skills considering how much the plane was drifting, whilst pouring. So thankful to the pilot. My partner was scared to death. I was just trying not to puke.
Was on a flight like this 2 weeks ago, storm Bert. Thought we were going to land about to touch the tarmac and we went straight back up, like a frisbee. Truly the skill is amazing Cabin crew member so relaxed laughing with his colleagues, I asked 'what is this?'. He replied so calmly ' its just the wind'
I came into the airport at the end of 1987 Hurricane, and it wasn't just the landing that was dodgy but the plane kept dropping thru air pockets, enough to lift you from the seat (with belts on to stop you hitting your head). I wondered if my last day had come!
The last one with the massive aircraft was quite smooth for that kind of weather. Compared to RyanAir's which looked very dodgy, I wouldn't want to be inside under such conditions! I am scared enough of flying anyways!
Was on a flight 2 hours ago from Zurich to Manchester. We had the worst turbulence i have ever known, and the winds were still very strong. Actually, I thought we were going to die. Imagine the poor people on these flights. The pilots are true heroes for sure.
I'm a train driver. After the Stonehaven derailment network rail impose speed restrictions at the drop of a hat. I'm surprised CAA don't impose compulsory grounding and diversions. Once there's a crash it'll be too late.
Hilarious. It's what we train for, it's what we do. Nothing exceptional, just a job like any other. Try landing onto an aircraft carrier in conditions way worse, that does take next level skills. I flew Sea Harrier for a number of years before leaving to be a commercial pilot.
When you think one landing is enough to watch but you watch the whole video because you are just amazed by the skills. I struggle landing anything on a Wii game so very impressed.
Wait, so police warned British citizens to avoid the storm, stay indoors, don't make any unnecessary journeys, keep safe, beware power cuts - but airlines are 'still' allowed to fill our skies with thousands of tons of flying metal thrown about by up to 90mph winds. You know, that's the kind of reasoning I've come to expect these days.
For information only, the windspeed at 40,000 feet where airliners fly is often between 100 and 160 mph, this is normal. Landing speed is 184 to 218 mph so 90 mph wind straight down the runway means half your work is done for you and so you will attain taxi speed faster without too much braking effort. The reason you should stay inside is because a tree might fall on you, or your head swiftly removed by a rooftile 🙃 Neither of which you will find in the sky or within the boundary of an airfield.😁
I was told that only the absolute best pilots in the world were deployed today to fly these planes. Didn't believe what I was told until I saw this video.
Ryanair FO to Captain: "Go around boss, we're all over the place here, the wings are flapping and one's nearly hit the tarmac". Captain - "Son this is Ryanair, no matter what we land, brace yourself, this might get bumpy".
Every single pilot shown has serious, serious minerals!! The skill level is only matched by the bravery level. Kudos, and a whole side helping of HELL NOOOOOOOOOO.......
I was today flying to Dublin and we had two abandoned landings due to wind speed causing landing gear to fail last minute. We flew around the black clouds for about 10mins with us then crossing and having another landing attempt at Blackpool which failed and then returned to Newcastle which we had a fuel dump and emergency light flashing a 40min flight turned into a flight around uk in harrowing weather trying to land safely. Was so scary the plane was rolling - worst flight I’ve ever been on
It's good that the pilots still control the take offs and landings, it makes me wonder how the autopilot system would cope with these adverse conditions.

Probably landing on autopilot
