  • Pienza - city in the Italian province of Siena, Tuscany.
In the 15th century, the village of Corsignano, whose native was Pope Pius II, stood on the site of the city. He ordered the Florentine architect Bernardo Rossellino to rebuild the village into an ideal Renaissance city, which was carried out after 1459. Among the most significant buildings are the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) and numerous palazzos (Piccolomini, Borgia, Comunale, Gonzaga).
First applied in Pienza, the rational scheme of urban planning was adopted by the architects of many other cities in Europe. In 1995, the Renaissance Pienza was declared a World Heritage Site.
