I have always been more of a rock fan but I will listen to most genres no matter what language it’s in and I did have a big kpop phase but not into it much these days. Although During the phase I discovered some korean indie bands that are really good so I listen to them a lot

I used to listen to kpop back 7 years ago like crazy I liked to watch Snsd, kara, f(x), sistar and so many others, but then they were all done and now new groups coming like black pink and BTS. I feel they don’t last long and they earn less for themselves as I heard because most of the money go to the company. That’s why I am not into it anymore.
Yeah it sounds like there might be some not so great things going on behind the scenes in a small (or large?) part of the k-pop world... 🤔
All those groups you used to follow, do they have solo careers now or they got out of the kpop world?

Maybe bcoz of racism some of the Australians don't like kpop. I just received racist comments by australians. It's not only white ppls' country it was Aboriginals' country.It was belong to them. so many countries got attacked by white ppl during ancient times including my country.

I'm Aussie ARMY, BLINK, STAY, EXO-L, ONCE, ATINY, ENGENE, MOA, REveluv, and so many more. I used to think the same.
I used to judge BTS (my ult) because they died their hair, and so many other things. I used to tease my friend about BTS and hate them just because my friend was an ARMY and freaked out about them all the time. I used to hate them just cause my friend fangirled over them all the time and I found it annoying. Not because I'd actually listened to their music, watched videos, it wasn't their fault I hated them.
After she bugged me to my wits end to watch dynamite, I finally gave in and watched the MV. But not once. Like 10 times in a row. I was awestruck. I just loved the song. I told her it was good when I got back to school, and that was the end of it for a while. Until the carpool karaoke came up on my UA-cam recommended. I clicked on it cause I was like "oh, it's BTS, I guess I may as well check it out. See what my friend talks about all the time."
That video because my favourite video for a long time. They were just so funny, real, and I felt like I could relate to them and they'd just be great people to hang out with.
I don't know what happened next, what video I viewed next, what song I listened to next, but I just know that I went spiralling down the rabbit hole like never before, not really caring anymore they spoke and sung in Korean. Like, there's subtitles, who cares.
I now understand the BU, am OT7, have watched every video, seen every photo, listened to most songs and learnt about their story 100x over. I feel like I've been walking by their side since debut. They've given me reasons to smile everyday.
And led me to other groups as well. At first I thought I wouldn't be loyal to BTS if I stanned other groups. But then I met another ARMY at my school and she was stanning so many other groups, and I eventually branched out further into kpop in general.
but the one thing bts taught me??
Don't judge a book by it's cover, title, OR author. I now don't hate on artists unless I've taken the time to dive into their backgrounds, music and other things.
And I think you'll find people 'don't like' things because of the image associated with it, what they've heard, or simply because they haven't taken the time to actually explore the music or know more about their backround.

Seems like when Brazilians or most Spanish-speaking countries are asked about K-pop the response is more respectful. They’ll say they heard of it & don’t mind learning about it. Australians are different. I’m a little sad watching their reaction, but I also live in the U.S. not in Australia.

Jae Barclay no I don’t have any online friends since I am only 11 and I only have an iPad I am lonely with no friends all because I like music sometimes it annoys me when people call the kpop fandom toxic when they don’t understand how unfair and horrible people treat kpop fans and make assumptions. Oh well.

I just know know Gangman Style by Psy. I don't listen to Kpop simply because I'm not accustomed to it. I generally don't even don't listen to American pop rock.
I appreciate someone who can belt since I'm more into musicals, but I'm not a hardcore opera fan either. But for everyone's sake sing from the diaphragm and only go nasally if you cannot hit those high notes. But if you the song is written in D or G, you have no excuse not to bekt it like Stars from Les Miserables.
However, as a fan of musicals, I listen to pop musicals like Starlight Express or even Wicked. Idina Menzel can really hit that high note in Defying Gravity. I have mad respect for her. Even the role of Fiyero, which is more of a rock voice, is awesome too.
I know this is supposed to be about Kpop. So To answer your question, the answer is no. I'm not really into mainstream music or popular world music. However, if the music type is on a musical, I will like it.
However, here is where the crossroads meet: Death Note -- The Musical. I like Frank Wildhorn's musicals, yet most of his most recent works have been collaborations in Asia, one of which is Death Note, which has done super well in Japan, as it is inspired by the Manga, and it has done well in Korea. However, Wildhorn in an American but most broadway do not like him. They've only liked Jekyll and Hyde Tge Musical. Death Note may note come to America despite the composer being American and was first written and had an English demo before being translated for stage into Korean and Japanese. But Hong Kwang-ho who played a role in the Korean production did produce a single from the musical called Hurricane. His version is incredible even though I cannot understand it. However, the English demo is sung by Jeremy Jordan and he doesn't really act the part. Just Google Hong Kwang-ho Hurricane Death Note and then Hurricane Death note concept album Jeremy Jordan.
This is the only crossroad where world's collide for me, as I don't listen to Kpop. But because Wildhorn produces musicals that kind of have a goth pop and his music attracted Korean and Japanese producers to make Death Note, that is how I know about the popular artist Hong Kwang-ho. If it wasn't for liking musicals or Frank Wildhorn, I would not know about Death Note and it's connection to Asian culture.
Isn't crazy how two worlds can come together -- the musical and Asian popular pop singers and actors?
Wow, a very well informed answer. I’ll admit Psy is the only Kpop artist I heard a full song from until this year. And I think it makes a lot of sense if you don’t really listen to American pop that you wouldn’t consider Korean pop!

Thank you for understanding that there is still variety in the music industry in South Korea! I listen to what I like no matter the language, and as a trained musician, I appreciate the musicality more than the performance. K-Pop is biased more towards performance, but once you travel outside of the "popular area", you really will find someone or multiple someones who will have something that interests your musical tastes and experience.
If it's okay with you, may I suggest some groups and bands for you?
1. 'Dreamcatcher'. They are a 7-membered girl group who have a unique rock-metal-EDM sound that isn't widely known in the South Korean music industry, or at least done by groups, especially girl groups. Their b-sides feature pretty much everything, so I'm sure you'll find something you like there. Their title tracks actually feature belting sections, and this works as another vocal line of itself.

2. 'Mamamoo'. A female quartet, they have extensive musical diversity and amazing vocalists, too. Earliest releases have more of a jazzy vibe, with it being a common theme throughout their music. This group is one of the strongest vocal groups in the industry today.

3. 'CLC'. A 6-membered girl group.
4. 'Rolling Quartz'. A female band.
5. 'Day6'. A male band.
6. 'The Rose'. A male quartet band.
7. 'Purple Rain'. A male band.
These groups and bands aren't all musical-theatre leaning, but showcase some of the strongest vocals I know of in the whole industry. Their music features mostly rock-leaning genres, but I hope that doesn't dissuade you from looking into each of them more. I also suggesting looking into the soloist game in South Korea, as you'll most likely find someone more specific to your taste that way.

However, I know, for example, even BTS has actually impacted the American voting system by having the gang note vote. I don't know the specifics. I know about Kim Junsu only because he was in the Korean version of Jekyll and Hyde. I'm really into musicals and composer Frank Wildhorn has made musicals in Japan and Korea including Death Note The Musical and Dracula The Musical.
What people don't understand is that K-pop include ALL genres, hip hop, pop, ballad, rock, edm, country etc.
Also, what people miss is that K-pop is actually what it is called 'idol music' in Korea and not the whole music industry there
there are groups, artists, songs that fit the bubble gum pop stereotype, but they are usually not that popular, actually the happy pop songs are more popular in the USA market than anywhere else
the most popular ones are more hip hop or edm or ballad based I would say
btw, a lot of artists write their own music, some compose and produce them as well (like BTS, Stray kids, Seventeen, Gfriend etc, and most of the solo artists)
I would argue that 'K-Pop' is an umbrella name that describes more the functioning of groups and bands, rather than the music they produce. Basically, if they went through the idol trainee experience, function under an entertainment company (rather than a record company), and release songs in South Korea and Korean, then that's what makes a group or band "K-Pop".
For example, my ult group is 'Dreamcatcher', which produce exclusively rock-metal-EDM music for their promotional title tracks. Despite the music they produce not being pop, they still function under the K-Pop industry, and are, therefore, classed as a 'K-Pop girl group...'.
This is just my sense of the music scene in South Korea.

"K-pop" is a dumb misnomer coined by ignorant or even racist music marketers. Now we're stuck with it, and it just fuels stupidity and perpetuates stereotypes

I purposely try to stay completely neutral and unbiased in the filming and editing of these videos. Further to this, I don’t think any of the answers contained within this video could be considered racist. Maybe uninformed at the most.

i think the problem with it is that people don't know that pop is popular not bubblegum pop, its different. there are bubblegum pop songs in kpop but they are limiting it based on that and think its only groups. fr there are rappers, rock bands and kpop and jpop are influenced by each other with many kpop bands and groups doing anime and jdrama osts and getting into the Japanese market. they think also its not English and they wont understand but half of the songs they listen to are latin. babymetal is a jrock band not korean. sbs pop asia is playing asian pop not just kpop and people also got mixed up with that. it is uneducated people looking at crazy fans that stand out and assuming that's how kpop is. They base it also on korean stereotypes and call it gay. fr the songs are no different from what they would listen to and its basically just the language and assumptions. please do not shout that u love kpop to joke around, its not funny and we've heard it all our life liking kpop. you respect our music, we respect urs. u hear us play, maybe u can just ignore it like ur going to the store. u don't ask the owner to shut up the music do u.
