How exactly did you get the cap to stay in place and keep it from falling down when you turn the shadow box upright?

Lots of velcro! Heck you could even hot glue it if you don't plan on taking it out again.

How thick should the shadow box be?

Hhmm... maybe 4 inches? I guess it depends on what your putting inside and how much room it will need.
