Interesting review. Personally i really like the Mofi DS releases. So much that I´ve moved the OGs I own out of my listening room. Many thanks. The DS comparison met my foremost interest. I had the 2009 Rhino and the MoFi 45. The MoFi fell so short of the Rhino due to its unnatural digitally fiddled sound that it’s gone by now. Interested in how the Rhino compares to the Japanese version.

What a damning (Mofi) review Dave! and have to take it seriously coming from you as we know you don't f-around about your listening, and neither do you have any axes to grind. even more surprising was the positive talk about the japan press, as we usually avoid most japan presses of rock in japan like the plague, they're often engineered compressed boxed up sound to avoid the neighbours being alarmed by sudden loud symbals of pink floyd. I see a mint copy of it fgoing or $30, might have to test your theories about the Mofi's going 'lifeless' - I only have these dire straits on mofi 45s
My first set of speakers in 1975 were celestion ditton 25's, my uncle told me in the listening room that the 66's were a better speaker, but he understood my choice as I liked loud rock music. ALL the best.
I have a first pressing at RTI Mofi Love Over Gold, and afer DSD gate, they added 1/2" 30 ips to 256 DSD on the website, nothing about DXD Plangent processing. I bought it before DSD gate, and really liked its dynamics and clarity. It was marginally superior to my US first pressing Bob Ludwig master. The big problem is the RTI vinyl is noisy as hell, and Music Direct wouldn't take it back when I mentioned i'd ultrasonically cleaned it to try and clear it up, it didn't. So I my go became the OG RL, until I happened across a Quiex II Love Over Gold Promo album. Holy cow, it blows away every version i've heard, and is now one of my system demo albums.
Yes I thoroughly agree the rhino hifi are so difficult to get in and out. The sound of these disks is very very good. I suggest the ZZ Top presses as well. The mofi…just get an OG pressing they are very available. My understanding is the plangent process is done while they are playing the tape. They have special heads that do D/A PCM DXD. This allows the calculations to fix the wow and flutter, speed issues from the original tape. DSD is most different than PCM. DSD sounds almost exactly like the source. I record all my vinyl to DSD. PCM flattens the sound stage. If you have a DSD capable DAC I can share a few files with you. Thanks Dave! Like always. Great video. I have quite a few great Japanese pressings from the 70s and 80s. My Santana III is absolutely amazing. I think the plangent process adds an audible change. In general the DSD cuts of mofi are like watching something in 4K resolution. It’s like watching a movie from the 80s in 4K the special effects don’t seem real. I am torn. I think nearly all the time the OG beats any of these modern represses. But I do like the mofi cuts for the detail and clarity. I am not sure what they do…but they really really get all the absolute details which may have a downside of removing some “life “

"sanitised and lifeless" sums it up perfectly. I am finding that more and more in the MOFI catalogue, and most of what comes out of Abbey Road too, to be honest.
@@DaveDenyernah that’s just yours and the other guy’s confirmation bias. Another very honest & in depth review Dave, thanks. I commented in your video for the MOFI On Every Street album, suggesting you “try before you buy” on the first 4 DS MOFI re-issues as they are so different to the UK originals & will not be to everyone’s taste. My MOFI was pressed at RTI but would not expect there to be much of a difference to one pressed at their new plant. I am in a similar position to you in that my RL mastered OG has been played to death and is not the cleanest, so do go to my MOFI copy sometimes, but it’s not a pressing I can sit down & critically listen to. I do have friends though that actually prefer the MOFI. These videos are invaluable to those of us seeking the best sounding versions of albums so keep them coming if you can Dave. Based on this review, I would suggest you steer well clear of the first 3 DS MOFIs, especially Making Movies as the UK OGs have far more life in them.
No. Nobody knows what's going on today. These new reissues could be designed for 7 speakers and beyond. You guys don't even mention WHAT you're listening too. Very disappointed in using Optimal to press these. I’ve had many issues with warping, no fill, scratches, but mainly warping. Almost all of copies are warped
I didn’t spend $60 on this MOFI expecting it to not be to my taste. The Rhino Tutu sounds better than my OG, the MOFI doesn’t. I just try to tell it as I hear it…
Because sometimes the vinyl version sounds significantly better than the CD. If I find that the CD is the best sounding version, then I'll say so (eg. check out my Tori Amos - Scarlett's Walk video).
Since Marvel Comics hasn’t produced anything of worth since the early-mid 1980’s: the Byrne FF/Miller-Mazzuchelli DD/Simonson Thor/Claremont-Sienkiewicz New Mutants/early Starlin Metamorphosis Odyssey era , and that includes the awful Infinity Gauntlet, the Ultimates, New Guardians, Armageddon, et al, why on earth anyone would pay attention to their paper product of the past four decades as inspiration for their screen product is beyond me. By the late 1980’s and absolutely by the 90’s Marvel had become the laughing stock of anyone who cared about the comics medium. It’s a shame the movies and TV shows brought back a (thin) veneer of respectability to the company, but in an ironic twist, however entertaining at least a few (not many!!!) of the early Marvel movies were, whichever studio made them, the cinematic universe took the same steep downhill trajectory as the comics had done.
Well, I guess the best of Marvel was the Aaron-Ribic Thor, but mostly for the glorious art, it was a torture to read.Doctor Strange also had a bit of good art a while back, and the Richard Corben Hulk was nice. The Alex Ross FF book was at least a good try to recapture old magic, but that’s all it was, and Mignola somewhat caught the old Lee-Kirby spirit a lot better in Hellboy.
Well who are you talking to with this approach? We've gone way beyond stereo now. We're up to 9 speakers now. There's 5 decades worth of equipment to try. There's 8 billion sonic experiences to buy and try from numerous brands of manufacturers. That's just from 1 recording. The error is with YOU and your understanding of what's going on out there in the world 🌎 What are you talking about?? Today with 7 speakers 🔊 there's 360 degree sound stages. Where is this bass sound coming from? The roof speakers? The marantz? The pioneer from 2011?? Where is this layering? Are you using 3 receivers simultaneously???
I use two speakers: Kerr Acoustic K100 full range studio monitors as it happens. My favorite music generally comes from the 1950s - 1980s. It was almost always made for stereo. I guess it’d horrify you that I have a dedicated mono cartridge / tonearm for those 50s / 60s monos. Often they are the best sounding versions.
I know you’re a audiophile channel but watching you showing copy after copy of the same record comparing minute differences must be tiring Wouldn’t you rather spend the money on records you don’t own instead of paying money for the 6th copy of a record you have already?? Just wondering!!!
No. Your way of thinking about this is really old fashioned. We've gone beyond having single copies of music. Today, we have receivers that produce numerous surrounding sounds. Only receiver manufacturers know what they've done to recordings and surround sounds. We have to try these sounds to find out what they are.
I’ve sold all the Mofi Dire Straits off. Replace the self titled with UK 1st pressing and Australian Maxicut pressings of Communique, Making Movies & Love Over Gold which all destroy the Mofi’s. Great review as always Dave!

Very disappointed in using Optimal to press these. I’ve had many issues with warping, no fill, scratches, but mainly warping. Almost all of copies are warped
Thanks for sharing this information. To be honest I’ve had most warp-issues from RTI pressed ‘Supervinyl’.
@@DaveDenyeragreed. RTI is pretty trash too. Best record plant is Record Industry that MOV uses.
Did this exercise pique your interest in obtaining original Japanese pressings of the other Dire Straits albums?
I have a Japanese Communique, which also sounds superb.
Many reviews and comments strike me as exactly like those made up to the 'MOFI scandal'.... be careful about being too effusive.
I didn’t spend $60 on this MOFI expecting it to not be to my taste. The Rhino Tutu sounds better than my OG, the MOFI doesn’t. I just try to tell it as I hear it…
Why buy digital lps? Digitised audio may as well be played on CD or similar. I think vinylised digital "remasterings " are a scam.
Because sometimes the vinyl version sounds significantly better than the CD. If I find that the CD is the best sounding version, then I'll say so (eg. check out my Tori Amos - Scarlett's Walk video).
@DaveDenyer I see your point Dave, but this shouldn't happen (ie in a perfect world).
I heard MOFI digitise everything first so for that reason I'm never going to buy their stuff.
They do, but funnily enough, no golden ear noticed, until one of theirs mentioned it.
They seem to these days. They’ve always had ‘a sound’ maybe me and others got this confused with the ‘DSD-Step’…
Interesting…
You’ll always find analog within an analogy! 😉
The error is with YOU and your understanding of what's going on out there in the world 🌎
What are you talking about??
Great review well done keep up the good work, please can you tell me the inners you are using thanks
I agree. It’s kind of weird.
Hi Dave, for forty years or so I’ve worked in the hifi biz. Getting the best possible sound is in my bones.
@@danielwalsh7538Those on the records in this video are from Sleeve City, I think. PVF (Perfect Vinyl Forever) sent me a bunch of them recently.
