      It takes some getting used to, but it actually plays out pretty logically in my experience. They had the same rule when designing Morphs in Khans of Tarkir and I think people got pretty used to the play pattern. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    Behind the Mask was really good for me. Useful to pump a creature, turn a Clue into a surprise-blocker, a 4/3 is enough to kill a face-down, and in the late game it can shrink a big threat to a 1/1 for an easy kill. At 1 mana in Blue, nobody expects it! I had 3 in my deck, and won several games thanks to it

    4:08 If you do a prerelease sealed event, all cards you open are legal including The List cards... _except_ for one of the two promo cards you'll get. You are not allowed to put Melek, Reforged Researcher, Tomik, Wielder of Law, or Voja, Jaws of the Conclave in your sealed deck.
    This is even more confusing than the similar situation was at MOM prerelease. In that set, the legality was at least readable off the set symbol: MOM and MUL cards were legal and MOC cards were not. At MKM prerelease, there will be List cards from a bajillion different sets that are legal, Special Guests cards that are legal, and MKM cards some of which are legal and some of which are not!
    Also, to further confuse matters, the set of List cards you can open in MKM limited is different by a few cards in paper than it is if draft on Arena.

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому

      At Prereleases I've gone to where you can't use a particular promo card, the store running the event has generally been pretty clear about it. I think they make that rule so they can give out some cool promo cards without unbalancing the sealed event, because if you were allowed to play those cards it would mess with the format in a way that seems suboptimal. It's definitely kinda strange, but you get a sweet card out of it, so I think the slight confusion is probably worth it for players. Thanks for letting folks know though because it is definitely worth knowing for folks attending Prerelease events. Also, the List being ever so slightly different on Arena is not a big deal in my opinion. It's only 3 cards different, and all of the differences are Rares anyway, so it's an even smaller chance that you'll see them in packs compared to if the changes were with Commons or Uncommons. It seems like the sort of thing that most people would not notice unless they told us about it, because seeing the particular Rares from The List is so infrequent anyway.

    Great guide, really helps me a lot getting better at drafts. I have one question though, is there any difference between disguise and morph?
    This set looks great, reminds me a bit of khans with disguise and even a kinda delve (collect evidence)
    Keep up the good work, wish you all the best!

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +3

      The difference between Disguise and Morph is that face down Disguise creatures have Ward 2 while Morphs are just vanilla 2/2s. The designers wanted to increase the power level of the 3 mana 2/2 creature part because cards are generally stronger than they were when Morph was last seen, and playing a vanilla 2/2 for 3 might have been too weak even with the ability to flip face up later. Also cool to think about the comparison to Khans! I had definitely thought about Disguise in relation to Morph, but I hadn't really thought about how Delve and Collect Evidence are both mechanics that exile cards from the graveyard. Collecting Evidence is quite a bit different since it cares about which cards get exiled and it isn't always used to reduce costs (though I guess adding abilities to a card is almost like making that card into one that would typically cost more mana), but there is definitely a nice parallel that is fun to think about! I'm glad you enjoyed my video, and I appreciate the kind comment!

    Hey,
    Thank for for your guide! Could you explain more about the rule of 5?
    Thanks

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +8

      Sure thing! Basically, Disguise abilities come in a wide range, with some creatures flipping face up for just one mana, some flipping face up for 7 mana, and most creatures falling somewhere in between. However, until you reach the 5 mana threshold (hence, "the rule of 5"), a Disguise creature can only flip into something that has 1 power or less, or 2 toughness or less. For example, one creature in the set flips into a 1/4 for 3 mana, too small to kill a 2/2, and others flip into 3/2s for 2 mana, statlines that trade with a 2/2. This limitation on Disguise cards makes it easier to block them in the early turns, because you know that you won't get blown out if you block with a 2/2. You still won't know exactly what your opponent has, but you will know that it can't flip to eat your creature in combat until 5 mana is reached ("eat your creature" refers to their creature surviving combat while yours dies).
      I hope this has provided some clarity and I'm so glad you enjoyed the guide!

    i think for this set, one small exception to the rule of 5 is that red gets a 'turn target face down card face up" in expose the culprit for 1R, which means that red with 2 open lands could still be a threat

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      Well the point of the rule of 5 is that the creature itself will not be able to win the combat. There are of course still combat tricks and ways to lose a combat before 5 mana is reached, but the point is that you don't have to worry about a 2 for 1 (where the creature flips and just wins the combat without outside assistance). If your opponent spends a card to flip their Disguised creature early, that is similar to if they used a combat trick to win the combat, which means they are trading one for one still because they had to invest a card from their hand to flip their creature early and win the combat. Hopefully that clarifies things. I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video!

    Set looks super fun, especially with the new take on morph type mechanics. Do you think pivots on pack 2 bombs will become less common with such strong themes? Thanks for the draft video. #DetectiveDrafter

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +2

      I think it will all be dependent on the specific draft with what sorts of cards are in the packs, and also on the specific person who is drafting. While there are plenty of strong themes, I also think there are also plenty of cards that fit well into multiple archetypes, such as strong removal spells. Some drafters naturally value flexibility a bit more than others, willing to give up on potentially strong pieces early if they have more narrow applications and are therefore more committal. Those drafters have more potential to make pack 2 pivots, but they sometimes give up some power level in early packs to keep that option open. So I don't think the ability to make late pivots will really change unless the drafter changes the way they approach things. Hopefully that makes sense! I agree that the set looks super fun, and I'm glad you enjoyed my draft guide!

    I understand the rule of 5 but just to be clear, take that example with the Defenestrated Phantom, if you were attacking with it in disguise, then your opponent blocked with a disguise, then you paid the 5 and became a flyer, do you still go to combat with the opponent’s disguise since you had entered combat with it already or do you swing over them and attack the player?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +2

      You still go to combat. If it helps, imagine how it would work if you played a combat trick that grants flying after blocks had happened. The fact that the creature has evasion now doesn’t stop the block from happening. Evasion would prevent the block from occurring only if the creature had evasion beforehand. Something like First Strike or Trample would still matter once the creature flipped, but Flying functions to prevent blocking in the first place, not impact things once blocks have occurred. Hopefully that clarifies things!

    I want to point out one thing and I would like to know your opinion: Investigate seems to powerful as a mechanic compare to cloak or disguise. I mean, from the looks of it, except for decks that can make several creatures suspicious, the rest of the strategies are slow. Doesn't this give too much advantage to the clues? Drawing one more card per turn (or even more) than your opponent if you have consistent way to create clues seems to me too strong compared to cloak or disguise mechanics.

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      I would say that this is not something to worry about, as each card is designed on an individual level. It's not as if they take two identical creatures and then give one of them Disguise and one of them Investigate. There is a team of very smart and competent designers making the cards and testing them to make sure things are balanced. Also, to further ease any of your worries, while Investigate is certainly a powerful mechanic, oftentimes it is balanced a bit by the cards it is on being slightly less efficient. Finally, it is totally find for mechanics to be of different power levels. Nobody questions that Flying is better than Reach, but they are still both worthwhile to have in the game! I think it is best to just view cards on an individual basis and whether they are good designs rather than worrying about the relative power level of mechanics. Hopefully this eases your mind a little.

    Just so I understand “the rule of 5” correctly: If my Opponent attacks with a disguised creature and I block with a disguised creature, unless my opponent uses 5 or more mana to flip his creature, the creatures will always trade (or my disguised creature will win combat if my opponent misplays), right?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      You're very close! Everything you said is correct, except there is a third option for what happens if they flip their creature for less than 5 mana, and that is that the creatures can bounce off each other with neither dying. For example, they can flip their Disguise creature into a 1/4 and then neither creature wins the combat. It sounds like you've got a good understanding of it though!

    • @NicolaiBolas

      Yep! They added Ward 2 because they’ve been printing better removal and things like that. Morph would have been a bit rough in a format with Shock!

    So for cards like nervous gardener if I just pay the OG mana cost and it ETB's you don't get the land drop right? Or do you still get effects from cards worded this way?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      You will not get the land because that is triggered, “When Nervous Gardener is turned face up,” and casting it normally is not turning it face up, it is just casting it face up. There are some cards that trigger on entering the battlefield or flipping, like Crowd-Control Warden which says, “As Crowd-Control Warden enters the battlefield or is turned face up…” but those cards will be very clear with how they function. Hopefully that clarifies things for you!

      It will not trigger because while face down it does not have any of the face up creature's properties.

    Can you activate a combat trick after a disguised create flips during a battle?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes you can. After it flips both players will still be able to do things. When I say you can’t respond to the flip, what I mean is that once someone pays the mana to flip their creature face up, the creature flips face up before anyone has the chance to do anything else. For example, there is no opportunity to Shock the creature while it is still a 2/2 once the mana to flip it has been paid. Hopefully that clarifies things!

    How many lands am I aloud to exile to collect evidence?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +2

      Technically, you can exile any number of lands when Collecting Evidence, but since lands have a mana value of 0 they won't help you make progress towards the Collect Evidence number you are trying to reach.

  • @niccopaoletti3143
    @niccopaoletti3143 8 місяців тому

    Is it an 18 lands format like khan's of tarkir ?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      I would still play 17 lands unless you have a specific deck that wants 18. One of the reasons 18 lands was good in Khans was because it was a 3 color format, so the extra land helped you get the color sources you needed to cast your spells. Morph was also good with the extra lands, but I think it was a combination of the need for fixing and extra mana that made it good as a default. With a more consistent 2 color deck you want to make sure you have plenty of ways to spend your mana before going up to 18. Hopefully that helps!

    What the hell is "the list"?

    • @NicolaiBolas
      @NicolaiBolas  8 місяців тому +1

      "The List" is like a bonus sheet. Similar to the Multiverse Legends from March of the Machine or the Enchanting Tales in Wilds of Eldraine. However, unlike those sets where there was a guaranteed bonus sheet slot in each pack, cards from The List appear in only 12.5% of booster packs (so 1 out of every 8 will have one). Also, you may hear the term, "Special Guests," thrown around as well, but those as just 10 extra cards on The List with special art. Overall there are 40 cards on The List and 10 Special Guests for a total of 50 cards that you can see from outside the main set. Most of them are Commons and Uncommons, but occasionally you will an extra Rare or Mythic in the slot. Hopefully that clarifies things!
