I know everyone thinks they seem so far away from each other and expressionless but I prefer it this way. I prefer a slow build up to an immediate embrace. And to me they're faces immit thoughtfulness. They're going through a lot of emotions very fast, from feelings of confusion and foolishness and finally to a sort of enlightenment. I can just imagine the feelings welling up inside of them that are fighting they're way out. After all their jumping and failing about they're finally still.

The ribbon around her wrist is where El Gallo grabbed her. It symbolizes her sexual attraction to the kind of man she holds as an ideal but would never settle for. Both she and Matt go in search of what they cannot have and this song is representative of growing up for both of them, as they realise they shouldn't chase ideals too fantastic and that they have loved each other all along. It's Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending

R.I.P., Harvey Schmidt, composer of one of the loveliest scores in all of kingdom come. THEY WERE YOU is also an absolutely sublime song.

IMHO the beauty of the Fantasticks is that the entire set fit into that one little box. Watching it come out was magical.

This is so enchanting! I've never seen the film, so this sent me to Hulu, & I've now watched it twice. I've purchased the DVD. I played Henry in our high school production.

When you're near me,Wonderful things come to be. Every secret prayer,Every fancy free,Everything I dared for both you and me.
All my wildest dreams Multiplied by two
    They were you.They were you.
    They were you.

I visit my grandparents in Maryland every year, they have this guest room with a tv and a TON of movies. A very long time ago my sister and I watched this movie and I forgot about it but I recently remembered the song "try to remember" because my sister (who is a senior now) said she sang it for chorus in the elementary school. I searched all over the Internet to try to find the song and the movie but I couldn't find it. I went and watched captain America today and they played try to remember and I recognized it right away and looked up the song and I finally found it!

When the moon was young,When the month was May,When the stage was hung for my holiday,
I saw shining lights But I never knew:
They were you. They were you. They were you.
When the dance was done,When I went my way,
When I tried to find rainbows far away,
All the lovely lights Seemed to fade from view:They were you. They were you. They were you. Without you near me,I can't see.

Just watched full movie and loved it! Biased though as I am smitten with Jonathon Morris (plays El Gallo). I thought he was incredibly sexy in that role, especially during the fencing scene. I loved the look and humor of the fim as well, Teller, hee hee. I am not as familiar with the staged version, so am bothered with this version at all. Everything that apparently hindered its simplicity I thought was there to accentuate the idea of smoke and mirrors and things not being what they seem.

  • @lskarin

I'll try. It was an off-Broadway production at the Sullivan Street theater in NYC's Greenwich Village. And it's spelt "Fantasticks." The late Jerry Orbach was the first El Gallo (pronounced guy-oh).
It's a story of two fathers pretending to hate each other so their kids would get together. The original cast CD is still available, and I think you can pick up the story from that.
Try Wiki-ing it, too. The boy and the girl were (the late) Kenneth Nelson and Rita Gardner. It's a great CD.

I first heard this on one of my parents' "Reader's Digest" album sets, & it was a MAN doing the WHOLE SONG, and I thought it was sooo sweet and gentle and sexy, THEN mom played her old Ed Ames LP & he too did it solo. I was shocked years later to hear it as a duet when I finally saw the play! "A GIRL in it?!?" Still nice though...

Sure. Any time. I've been a major fan of this show ever since my mom did it at community theatre. Lorre Noto's son saw the performance and told her she was the best woman he'd ever seen play Huckleby. I know this show like the back of my hand and if you have any more questions, I will certainly be glad to help. When are the auditions? I have a copy of the script put out through Applause Musical Library and can send you the link to get a cheap copy of it. Can we start a yahoo group for this?

The simplicity of the stage musical was a LOT of its charm--even this "simplistic" film made the show too complicated--and the fully-orchestrated music does more harm than good. I would like to see it professionally filmed on-stage (with an audience?) because it is THAT production that ran off-Broadway for 42 years!!

This rendition is superior to the Nelson-Gardner verson of the original. Voices less harsh.

The movie itself is pretty terrible especially compared to the stage version. But Matt, Luisa, and the Fathers all did awesome jobs.
Not exactly a fan of this El Gallo or Henry and Mortimer

Just my opinion...the stage production used piano and harp--nothing else. Just another piece of the "simplicity" lost to the film. I DID enjoy the movie but it wasn't the same emotional experience for me.
