I'd like to add, I used to have some respect for Ager for his theories, but it REALLY took a hit after a few comments he made sporadically in his YT comments, in praise of the modern right wing and even in defense of Donald Trump, and then a claim in a since deleted video that he wasn't going to get "the jab" due to fears over side effects - then when I raised these things in a critique of one of his videos he threw an embarrassing tantrum, denying it, calling me a liar and a "coward" etc. As such, now he strikes me as an intelligent but quite neurotic and very dishonest guy with something of an inferiority complex. I take his opinions with a pinch of salt after that.

And I don't promote them in my comment sections either. But even if I had, so what? We live in a democracy where anybody is allowed to vote for and openly support any candidate / party they wish. You obviously don't believe in that, which makes YOU the authoritarian. The same goes for medical treatments. Each of us is entitled to make our own personal decisions. Again you are the fascist in this for objecting to other's choices. I did make one fairly long vid about the cultural reaction to covid and I gave no advice on jabs at all. Doesn't sit well with your narrative does it.
I've also explained to you before the aritficiality of the left vs right political model. If you support either then you're very naive because history shows the horrors and similarity of both extremes. You obviously identify as "left wing" and that makes you equally as bad as a "right winger".
Last time you levelled these allegations my way behind the cowardly anonymity of YT comment sections you claimed you had retained screen shots of the things you claimed I'd said. You weren't even able to quote me specifically. I challenged you to publish your screen shots in a dedicated video and to get in front of the camera and let people hear your voice (as I do when I publish), but you didn't. The reason is because you were lying. You have no such screen shots and couldn't even name which specific video under which I had supposedly made the statements. So, again, i'm calling you out as a coward and a liar. And I challenge you again to publish your supposed screen shots and to name the vids they were taken from.
BTW folks, apologies for the poor audio quality at my end. I'd set up my mic, but Zoom defaulted to the poor quality built in mic of my webcam. Will look out for that next time.

Rob's interpretations of Kubrick movies never fail to blow my mind. He's one of the best.

Great minds think alike. I discovered Rob a couple years ago, if memory serves. He's my go-to for movie analysis. He's the most consistently enlightening of those who do film analysis. He's the only one who manages to take me from, "I'm not buying it" to "OK, he's right".
One of his greatest rhetorical techniques is that he always states the arguments against his assertions. Arguments which I was thinking before he broached them. Then he proceeds to prove his premise -- pretty well in most cases.
He's most useful for auteur pieces because those pieces are loaded with intention. More pipelined moviemaking isn't as amenable to valid interpretations because the directors aren't making many of the decisions.
We apparently discovered him roughly around the same time then. 😊
I was diving into the shining and his analysis just got me hooked on Rob more than on Kubrick actually. His take on the empire strikes back, which he did recently is also fantastic!
I wish he'd collaborate with the critical drinker on open bar or anything really. 🖖
@@theinnerlight8016 Rob is kind of like a treasure which is buried among non-descript tokens, then you find it and it changes your perceptions.
His Shining analyses are the best I've ever found for any movie -- by a long shot. When I try to listen to anyone else speak about The Shining, if they don't come to certain conclusions pointed out by Rob, their analysis just appears to be superficial and not very well researched.
Rob's analysis of The Shining is the reviewers review. Anyone who wants to study and discuss film should watch all of Rob's videos on The Shining to understand how much depth that cinema is capable of providing.
Recently, some channel pointed out something new which nobody else seemed to catch: Jack often looks directly into the camera -- which is generally a big no-no for actors. Even when an actor sweeps their eyes from left to right onscreen, actors should never do that involuntary pause where their eyes lock onto a subject when the lens enters their field of view.
This is why many actors don't want anyone looking directly at them while doing a take -- because the eyes will involuntarily lock onto other eyes and the audience will subconsciously notice. Even when you're in a conversation, if someone quickly glances past you over your shoulder, you'll know instantly they've disengaged in the conversation because someone is behind you.

Collative Learning is such a good channel for delving into concepts that maybe lingered below the surface when watching movies but never came to realisation during or after watching a film.
After viewing some of Rob's videos i've went back and watched whatever movie his video was about with a new mindset and enjoyed them in a different way than previously.

I work in a beauty salon, and Everyday I watch how people respond to what we have on the tv, the news, a war movie, a family blockbuster, and rarely anything controversial or polarizing. Our salon gets a range of ppl, not a very diverse range, but still some. And most people seem to respond similarly- they’d rather be entertained by the fast and furious movies than think about any single thing they consume. I always come away from these chats with ppl about film/movies/TV feeling bad that I’ve not successfully connected with the person. I don’t want to be elitist or snobby but it still surprises me when ppl genuinely have 0 knowledge or interest in these topics. Most ppl try to be the most interesting person in the room- it’s the nature of the beauty industry. They don’t care to talk about anything worthwhile or deep. I’m starting to realize I can’t milk a rock.
I also watch cheesy flicks and at other times more complex fare (I have watched every Kubrick film multiple times and watched Rob Ager's videos). Depending on the day you talk to me I might be the shallow pop culture consumer or someone with a more sophisticated taste. Also depends on the environment as well. The thing is, I'm pretty sure when I'm talking about trashy pop culture I forget in that moment that I've actually read Jung and Nabokov, love classical music, etc. However...I'm going to say that I don't think most people are like me. Some are, but the majority are just pop culture consumers. Thanks for reading my blog post!

Love Rob's work. Been following him for years. I do have to say...and I've written this many, many times: Dolly HAD braces. I was 11 years old, in the theatre with my best friend, Jaws smiles at Dolly, Dolly smiles back at Jaws...the whole theatre burst out in laughter. It was an absolute fantastic joke. Never forgot it. No doubt whatsoever. Shiny braces. They were a match made in heaven.

Little feedback now. You and Rob talked about the positive and negative Shadows. I suppose it's similar to the visual trope of the Angel and Devil parts of oneself hovering on the shoulders of oneself when feeling conflicted over tempting choices. And I think Rob did talk in similar terms to what you did in one of his Apocalypse Now analysis videos where he talked about the good/bad paths we choose to not take as becoming our "Subconscious Gods".
The Daniel Craig Bond films (with the exception of Quantum of Solace) I still find mostly okay to watch, but they really climbed down from the older classics in terms of creativity. I especially miss having memorable henchmen, where have they gone? As some reviewers say, the modern day Bond makers are more focused on getting critical praises and Oscars than actually entertaining audiences. And if you look up on real life history of espionage, there were some really ingenious (and hilarious) things they did, but a lot of that stuff has been dropped in the new Bond films in favour of posing.
The Dolly has Braces thing, I did think she had it when I first saw Moonraker on DVD at age 11. Still got the copy here. Really strange how we process and remember things 🦷🦷
The truth is, you have an animal brain, which develops earliest in the womb, and is responsible for your ability to interact with the world. As such, it can be argued that it is also responsible for your instinctive reaction to said interaction, The cause to your effect, if you will.
But then you introduce three years of training and hey presto you have a human baby.

Great discussion and thanks for all you do! I hope you can have Ager on again for another talk at some point. I'm sure many would enjoy a back-and-forth between the two of you on, say, all things Lynch or maybe Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, a film Ager clearly knows extraordinarily well.
i find it so odd that hardly anyone (other than rob) gets that the shining is really about DV / inc est. its one of the most iconic classic films of all time but most people simply dont get it.

I liked the 007 talk. Roger Moore was always my Bond. I guess it's because of the colorful and over-the-top nature of his films.
The Daniel Craig films were trying to blend the 007 films with the Bourne films, which were incredibly popular when Casino Royale came out. The result was very mixed. I liked two of his films but the rest were mediocre or just bad.

Interesting… Regarding your discussion of the Mandela Effect in Bond specifically: I can’t remember that scene in No Time To Die being any different, but the time between me watching it in the cinema and watching it on Blu-Ray may have something to do with that. I’ll look into that one myself, see if I can find any info on it, you seemed dead set about it, so I’ll take you at your word and see if anything comes up.
A lot of filmmakers do this, so it’s not unreasonable to assume this is the case. I mean, The Exorcist II was (in a vain attempt to save the film, and we saw how that turned out 🤣) actually majorly recut _whilst it was running_ in the cinema, and of course, we all know about the lost ending to The Shining that has never resurfaced following its immediate removal by Kubrick after the first few screenings. Would love to see that emerge one day…
Very interesting to hear this discussion with Rob, he’s one of my favourite content creators, the insight he has given me and so many others is invaluable. And it’s always great to listen to another Bond super-fan such as yourself, not that the other parts of your discussion lacked interesting insight!
Kubrick is famous for pulling 'A Clockwork Orange' from UK cinemas, due to the media overplaying it's impact. The film went on to become a cult classic, in the UK. I think he just learned from that.

Instant reaction, I think you need to live in, and experience, a world in which you are affected by the points he raises. You need an intrinsic understanding of the real world upon which he creates his worlds.

Taraban’s take on the modern male fantasy that Craig’s Bond represents is fascinating! Does anyone have suggestions of any other films that get at a similar idea?
I love Rob Ager's work, especially his video on the movie "Alien" and "true feminism."
It was mentioned in the interview that some directors choose to hide meaning or answers in their movies. I suspect one of the reasons may be a need to feel understood. In order to do that through a medium like movies you hide rewards behind obscure information that a lazy observer would miss but a sincere listener would pick up on. Non-verbal communication is so important but the director can't communicate it with you directly (the actors can use body language, but those are more like tools of the director than the director themselves.)
Maybe it's just me but I do a small bit of writing (DnD) and I love when a small clue is noticed and leads to greater understanding or communication.
If you want to be understood you should speak simply.
Don't get me wrong, I love deeper, hidden meanings in films, but I don't credit it to wanting to be understood. It's all about wanting to be talked about, and therefore remembered. It's the human quest for immortality.
@@happinesstan I appreciate the advice but I disagree, maybe a balance can be struck but the whole point is that being understood is a means to an end. It means a shared understanding, intuition or empathy. It gives you a sense of care or concern. It's one thing when you are working away in your office and you tell your wife you are hungry, and it's another thing when 2 hours into your work she shows up unprovoked with a plate of food you never asked for. The two are not the same.

People can never guess the sheet that I have been through based on my mannerism. I'm not faking my bubbly-ness. I just don't want to be defined by what happened to me. Can you imagine thinking "What if a tragedy did befall me?" A very specific tragedy, like the inevitable tragedy that we strive to avoid at the point of birth.
What if, upon birth, you found yourself floating in the void of space?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with watching a movie, as I do the first time, with nothing more than a blank expression and an open mind. You have to submit your senses to the film director, and allow them the freedom of your mind, for an hour and a half [sometimes longer if the director is bold enough].
In fact I would implore anybody to watch all films in this manner. Particularly the first time [I doubt it's possible on second viewing].
Simple fact, you can't re-view, on your first viewing.
They mention Lynch, and Mulholland Drive is a perfect example. It appears incoherent on first analysis, but if you just allow yourself to absorb the artistic intention of Lynch, you get a very strong feeling for what it is about. If that interess you then you return, looking for more clues.
Another film that fits this category is 'Under The Silver Lake'. But if you enter, seeking to analyse, you probably won't enjoy it first time.
Marcus Aurelius [I think] said "the unexamined life is not worth living", but you've got to first live life for there to be anything worthy of examination.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the baby in 2001, is abandoned in the void of space, is it not?

I think it's interesting that Mr Ager gets so upset at people who say, "It's just a movie," and then he says that the meaning of 2001 ASO is to touch the screen and see that "It's just a movie."
Or when you point out freemasonry, Rob Ager starts acting like the black guy from the John Carpenter movie. As a Kubrick guy, Rob could easily make a video on the moon landing footage with the premise that it would be completely baseless to entertain the idea that Kubrick had anything to do with the moon landing footage if, in fact, all of the concerns are baseless... But in the age of internet, he'd be laughed off if he started waving off a damning concern after a damning concern. However, sure, we all know you just invite problems your way by touching this subject, and Rob, wisely enough, just shies away from it. But I don't believe he recognizes it, and also, boy, does it crap all over this spiel of his about joes not appreciating deep cuts.

I do recall Kubrick stating that humans love puzzles and enigmas, they are attractive to them.
Thing is, analysing films is at least a part time job. Most people don't have the time, or the money, to watch a film seven times a day.
Humans fear their shadow because they imagine it to be human, like them.

The fact that the first half of Full Metal Jacket depicts the complete dehumanisation is a clue, don't you think?
Maybe why it's difficult for a human actor to portray it without looking like they're in a war movie.
Have either of you heard of Edward Bernays [I'm sure I heard Rob talk about him before, but can't be certain]? Nephew of Freud who was a good friend of Jung. Please tell me you've read his book 'Propaganda' before you all fell in love with his archetypes.
In fairness, I'm assuming previous to watching, but I'll be surprised if they critique Jung, nobody does these days. Although they do [rightfully] critique his biggest fan.
My wholly presumptive point is that acting as if Jung has deciphered humanity with his system of archetypes is just foolhardy, he is an influential member of a movement that has sought to encode it.
If you look for Jungian archetypes in films, you'll find them. It's really no surprise. Nor is it a fortunate coincidence.
Watching these videos inspires thoughts that I sometimes feel the film didn't, but then I don't rewatch that many.
Anyway, Rob's comment 11:02 about testing the apes with the most potential, is interesting, in relation to Bernays' work. Potential for what, exactly? Independent thought? I doubt it.
I suspect they're looking for cast members for 'Gogglebox'.
Yeah, straight off the bat, suggesting Jung's archetypes might have a biological origin, isn't a promiing start. But again, I'm pre-empting.
It's true that, biologically, there is likely some evidence to reinforce his theory. But more likely the strongest evidence is literature, i.e. the distillation of all life, down to the dramatic moments that excite us.

But ok it’s an alien (not of the natural world) technology (a black rectangle) that once you touch it you are forever changed by it’s knowledge as it sends the whole species in a different direction. Exactly like the apes in the opening scene of 2001. The whole movie is an allegory…it’s not at all about space travel. If you want me to simply tell you all the proofs that the earth is flat in a video recorded on my phone I suppose I can, but there are far better ones on UA-cam that have been here for years. Eric Dubay. That's the channel I'd love to see you analyze. He has a video and book called 200 Proofs the Earth is not a Spinning Ball. It's pretty extensive and and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. I assumed you'd already seen it and dismissed it. Either way, I want to know your thoughts on it. I'm not a troll and I'm not some kind of extremist. I'm just a guy who calls it how it I see it. And the way I see it is we were all brainwashed into the globe/space lie and once you see the proof, i.e. water always rest level and water covers most of the earth, it should be relatively easy to see the lie, but it's not that simple. Cognitive dissonance has never been stronger than with this issue. It hurts my brain trying to understand how someone can see the proof and still hold this belief that we're on a ball in a void. New Testament fulfilled the Old. Neither one makes sense without the other. Even Christians will say things like God of the Old Testament, and that is a fundamental misunderstanding of what you’re reading. Extremely cool to read the Bible as you would a fiction book. The authors had intent, and is trying to put a picture in your mind while foreshadowing, mirroring and all sorts of other things.
